Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our October 25th, 2010 Monday Memo

Archery Shoot

Another great day was had today at Cub Archery. The weather was cool, there was little sun in fact, and there was no wind, so conditions were perfect! We had a particularly exciting event in the morning at the A.M. shoot, since we had a tie and had to have a shoot off for 2nd and 3rd place. It was very close! (the first picture is of the 2 boys and their target) The boys were all very well-behaved, and did an excellent job following the rules, and most importantly they all had fun! Here are the names of the top 5 shooters in each session, that are invited back to the shoot-off on November 6:

A.M. Shoot
5th Place:   Kevin Kilrangsri, Pack 243, Temescal District
4th Place:   Sebastian Kaye, Pack 65, Mt. Rubidoux District
3rd Place:   Nathan McCormick, Pack 24, Greyback District
2nd Place:  Alan Kernin, Pack 16, Greyback District
1st Place:   Coen Sovine, Pack 65, Mt. Rubidoux District
P.M. Shoot
5th Place:   Richard Linnens, Pack 332, Greyback District
4th Place:   Jacob Alcaraz, Pack 29, Mt. Rubidoux District
3rd Place:   Jed Muldong, Pack 621, Old Baldy District
2nd Place:  Jeremy Contreras, Pack 29, Mt. Rubidoux District
1st Place:   Matthew Dull, Pack 614, Tahquitz District

Congratulations to all the boys, as always we are very proud of the example they set as scouts. They are attentive and polite, and we enjoy teaching them the sport of archery!

Venturing Training

Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) is being replaced by a new course entitled Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or ILSC. Originally the title was to be Crew Leadership Training (CLT) and during the review of the syllabus, the writers agreed the title Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews was a more fitting title and described the course more accurately.

The purpose of ILSC is to teach crew members with leadership positions what their new job is and how to most effectively reach success in that role.

ILSC is intended to help Venturers in leadership positions within their crew understand their responsibilities and equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILSC is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Venturers and is a replacement for VLSC. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for Venturers to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is also required for Kodiak.

You may ask, "Why the change...?" The goal is to have a uniform, aligned training platform for all programs so that those Scouters may transition smoothly from one course to the next regardless of what type of unit they belong to. All but the intro is now "program neutral" and each course needs the same basic info as prerequisite.

The Volunteer Development Team expects this course to be released to the Scouting community within 30 days. Watch the training page on scouting.org for updates.

Kudos to 3 Peaks Webelos Woods!

Dear Joe / Kimber,

I've been meaning to write a letter to you since last weekend, but as with most camps, once we get down the hill we get busy.  It seems email is the best way for me to communicate.

Last weekend, our unit, Old Baldy Pack 628, attended Webelos Woods at Camp Emerson.  As the Cubmaster and Webelos II Den leader, this is the 2nd Webelos specific campout I've attended, and about the 20th Scout campout overall.  I am also an Asst. Scoutmaster with our Troop, and am priviledge to go on campouts with them as well.

I wanted to make sure I let you both know that Matt Brandt and his staff did an outstanding job.  As I let Matt know, of all of the Scout camps I've been to, this was by far the most organized, most well run camp.  I have been involved with camps for over 20 years, having been on staff at Pine Summit in Big Bear, and having served as both Program Director and Camp Director at several camps with our church.  I know what kind of effort it takes to do a camp like this, and Matt and his staff put in that effort and then some.  The check-in and check-out procedures were smooth, the facilities were kept up, the program material was outstanding, the schedule was tight without too much slack or too little time, and Matt made sure he and his staff were available for questions if we had them.  Everybody in our unit commented on what a great job they thought the staff was doing.

So that's really all I had to say.  I'm hoping we have opportunities in the future to attend and/or help out.

Sincerely, Toby Pike, Cubmaster
Old Baldy Pack 628

Dear Joe,

Recently the Webelos patrol of Pack 310 participated in the Three Peaks 2010 Webelos Woods. Our boys had a great time participating in the all of the activities offered by Matt and his staff. The events were well planned and executed as well as interesting and entertaining. Matt and his staff of youth and adults from Troop 444 and Troop 310 are to be commended on hosting a successful event.

A couple of observations I would comment on are;

coordination of event areas with patrols and meals, basically all of the units were divided into two groups, activities were in two general areas and the groups were assigned to the two areas and remained there until lunch, lunch was served in one area where both groups assembled and then the groups swapped areas. The transition was smooth and seamless.

The youth staff was energetic and enthusiastic. Although this was the first time staffing for some of these boys, they all ran their events well. A few memorable and notable boys were Nick Emerson of Troop 310, Ryan Brandt of Troop 444 and the entire team at the archery range.

Thank you for your support of activities like this and keep them coming. The Phoenix Patrol of Pack 310 had a memorable time. Please forward our thanks to Mr. Brandt.

YIS, Mark McCracken, Webelos Den Leader
Phoenix Patrol Pack 310

What’s the secret of success? You’ll get different answers from different people, of course. Here’s an interesting perspective from Walter Chrysler, the automaker who founded Chrysler Motors in the 1920’s.

“The real secret of success is enthusiasm,” he said. Yes, more than enthusiasm, I would say is excitement. I like to see people get excited. When they get excited, they make a success of their lives. “You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eye; it is the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of your will and your energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude, they have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis.” Having enthusiasm, even passion, for life can make all the difference between merely surviving and actually thriving.

Have a great Scouting week!
