California Inland Empire Council Monday Memo |
 |
Welcome to our October 3rd, 2011 Monday Memo |
Old Baldy District Troop 652
Troop 652 took a trip down to Fiesta Island in August for some "Fun in the Sun". 37 Scouts and 12 Adults enjoyed beach camping and Kayaking and Canoeing in Mission Bay. The weather was perfect, the food was great and we had 7 Scouts earn their Rank Advancement for their next level.
In September, Troop 652 hiked the Mt. Baden Powell Trail. We had 20 Scouts and 10 Adults earn the "Broken Arrow" award. Hiking the 2,900 feet of elevation gain in just 4 miles and then hiking 4 miles back down was a pre-requisite for the following weekends backpacking trip.
The following weekend, Troop 652 had 16 Scouts and 10 Adults enjoy a backpacking trip of 8 miles in the San Bernardino National Forest. We hiked the Cougar Crest Trail to Holcomb Valley Scout Ranch and made camp on the "Wilderness Side". For half of the crew, this was there first backpacking trip. A great time was had by all!
Stay tuned for more adventures from Boy Scout Troop 652 ~Old Baldy District, Rancho Cuamonga!

Traveling To the 2013 Jamboree Made Easy
Want to attend the 2013 National Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, but worried about how to get there? No need.
On top of being a one-stop shop for high adventure, the Summit is making sure that travel to the site is easier than ever.
To begin, the Summit is going to have all of your necessary gear waiting for you on-site. Along with a duffle to pack your gear in, Scout kits including tents, cots, dining flies, cooking utensils, and gas stoves will be waiting for you when you arrive! All you need is yourself and some personal items.
Also, whether you plan on flying, taking a bus or train, or making a road trip out of it, the Summit is closer than you think.
If you want to fly, there are four major airports within four hours of the Summit, including Charleston, West Virginia, which is only an hour away. Or you can fly into airports located in Charlotte, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Cincinnati, Ohio.
Taking a train or bus? Several stations are located near the Summit, and there is plenty of highway access near the site, which will help alleviate traffic jams at the jamboree.
Now that you know how easy it is to get to the Summit, don’t forget to register at bsajamboree.org or summit.scouting.org. Download the California Inland Empire Council youth application.
Jamboree-On-The-Air Is Right Around The Corner
The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community.
The 2011 event is Oct. 15–16. While complete details are available online at the JOTA site, you may download fact sheets for Scout leaders and for radio amateurs.
The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2010 JOTA had more than 700,000 Scout participants from nearly 6,000 amateur radio stations. For this year’s event, there are currently more than 80 stations registered in the United States, representing more than 10,000 planned participants. If your Scouts haven’t yet registered their station, they can do so at www.scouting.org/jota/station_registration.aspx.
Bookshare Makes Printed Scouting Materials Accessible for Those With Disabilities
One important part of becoming a Scout is reading Scouting books and manuals. From hiking and camping to reading and citizenship, Scouting materials provide valuable lessons. Through a partnership with Bookshare®, Scouts, unit leaders, and parents with qualified print disabilities can get accessible versions of important Scouting materials all in one place.
Bookshare is an online library of accessible e-books that allows readers with print disabilities to listen to books, see words and hear them read as they are highlighted on a screen, read in Braille, and much more! Bookshare has more than 100,000 books—including Scouting materials—that can be read on desktop computers, laptops, Apple iPads, iPhones, iPod touches, MP3 players, and other assistive technology.
Memberships are free for U.S. students with a qualifying disability; non-students and adult Scouters will get a waiver for their setup fee (use the promo code: SCOUT) and will only pay $50 annually. All members receive free reading software.
Using Bookshare:
- Helps Scouts, unit leaders, and parents to read
- Provides easy access to Scouting publications all in one place
- Helps Scouts keep pace with their peers
- Makes Scouting more accessible and meaningful
For more information on how to take advantage of this program, read the Bookshare brochure.

BeAScout.org - Updating Your Contact Information
Once your unit’s Google map pin has been established online – (at beascout.org), the leadership of the pack, troop, team or crew is able to update their information as often as they want and when they want.
Every unit has the ability to allow (3) individuals access into the system – they can be the Unit Leader (Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Crew Advisor, or Varsity Coach), Committee Chair, and Chartered Representative – or any registered leader, if the unit so desires to select, can have access – however, you are limited to just three.
A unit can post meeting dates, location, time as well as any news they want to share about their unit – such as “Blue & Gold” “Court of Honor’ – so information should be updated on a regular basis.
If you have any questions – please contact your district executive.

‘Scouting’ Magazine Launches New Website
Have you checked out the new Scouting magazine website? Scoutingmagazine.org has recently been redesigned to better suit the fast-paced world of the BSA volunteer. They’re busy people—with work, family, and Scouting. That’s why they need more than just the award-winning stories and photographs that appear five times a year in the print version of Scouting magazine. They need relevant information that’s easy to access and better helps them serve their Scouts.
On the new site, volunteers are just a click away from everything they need to know to offer a quality Scouting program to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers, including up-to-date policy information, outdoor tips and techniques, health-and-safety procedures, expert advice from Scouting professionals and longtime leaders, and much more. And, when they want it, they can still find the same useful and exciting articles that appear in every issue of Scouting magazine.
Built on wisdom from longtime Scouters and authorities in a variety of disciplines, the information provided on the new Scouting magazine website draws from many great sources: recent and archival issues of the magazine, scouting.org, and diverse online sites related to the BSA. It’s a virtual “one-stop shop” for all things Scouting.
Volunteers will enjoy the brief video clip by Tico Perez, national commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, who offers his thoughts on why everyone should bookmark scoutingmagazine.org and keep coming back for more. And for those who want daily updates on the latest news from Scouting, they can always check the magazine’s official blog: Bryan on Scouting, at blog.scoutingmagazine.org.
