Welcome to our October 31st, 2011 Monday Memo |
Youth Leaders Get Trained in Mt. Rubidoux
Mt. Rubidoux District minted 31 new youth leaders at Cedar Badge Patrol Leader Training. The weekend training event, held Oct. 13-14 at an LDS facility in Riverside, also attracted Scouts from Five Nations and High Desert districts. Enthusiasm was high all weekend as the boys enjoyed pure Scouting: Learning while having fun.
Cedar Badge covered the new Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and the Patrol Leader Handbook. Through games and fun, hands-on training sessions, Scouts learned more about leadership such as planning and conducting troop and patrol meetings, campouts, campfires, religious observances and songleading. Scouts come away with a better understanding of their leadership roles and ideas to put some spark in their troop program. Scouts, who formed patrols and created flags and yells, also learned the value of teamwork and the patrol method
Mt. Rubidoux District Chair Jon Kantola was Scoutmaster for the Cedar Badge troop. He was assisted by six NYLT-trained youths and five Wood Badge-trained Scouters. The youth staff delivered the learning sessions using the Teaching EDGE, modeled a boy-lead troop and demonstrated Scouting spirit at its finest.
Cedar Badge has been part of Mt. Rubidoux’s training commitment to Scouts for more than three decades. The program, which was developed by the district leadership, assists Scoutmasters in the training of their youth leaders.

Cub Archery Shoot
We had a fantastic kick-off for the 2011 Fall Cub Archery session on Saturday, 10-29-11! The morning session had a clear skies and cool air, while afternoon session was a little warmer but still beautiful. The boys were all very attentive, and had a great time shooting. We had 22 attend in the morning, and only 3 in the afternoon, but they all enjoyed themselves! Our top shooters are invited back for the shoot-off on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 9am.
The top 5 boys for the A.M. Session are: 1st Place: Gabriel G. Pack 16, Greyback District 2nd Place: Elijah G. Pack 322, Greyback District 3rd Place: Eric M. Pack 16, Greyback District 4th Place: Nicholas T. Pack 16, Greyback District 5th Place: Andrew H. Pack 31, Greyback District
The top 3 boys for the P.M. Session are: 1st Place: Jared J. Pack 16, Greyback District 2nd Place: Justin V. Pack 322, Greyback District 3rd Place: Sean C. Pack 16, Greyback District | | |
As you can see, Greyback District had a fantastic showing at both shoots! Hopefully the other districts will attend over the next couple of weeks so their boys can enjoy some archery as well. I especially want to commend our top shooters for the P.M. Session, since they weren't able to receive their ribbons. I only received one set of ribbons from the printer, he had some issues with his equipment and will get the balance to me this next week. The boys in the afternoon session were very understanding and took it in stride that they will receive their ribbons at the shoot-off. A huge thank you to all of the boys that came, and to their parents and leaders for bringing them!

Sustainability at the Summit
Excitement is building for the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. With lots of hype about whitewater rafting, zip-line canopy tours, biking trails, and hiking trails, who wouldn’t be excited?
However, while the Summit will be known widely for its action-packed activities, there are plenty of other projects on-site that will make it unique. Example: How about the eco-friendly shower houses?
Summit developer Trinity Works is constructing a series of permanent shower houses that will make rinsing off a “green” experience. For starters, the shower houses are made entirely of locally cut and milled hemlock, which means when a tree is cut to make room for construction, there is an excellent chance it will end up as a structure just down the road.
On top of that, the shower houses will use a gray-water recycling system that captures and treats used sink water and then recycles it to flush toilets and urinals.
Here’s how it works:
- You use the sink while washing your hands.
- The sink water then enters the gray-water system, where it is treated by a series of filters and UV rays.
- The gray water is sent through wastewater treatment process.
- It is then recycled into the toilet and urinal flush system.
