Welcome to our October 8th, 2012 Monday Memo My Trip to the 13th Korea National Jamboree Hi! My name is Nick S. I am a 15 year old Scout from Troop 54 in Corona, California. I never thought as a Boy Scout I would be offered the opportunity to travel to a foreign country, but that is what I was able to do over this past summer. On July 29th, I joined a small group of Scouts and Scouters from across the country in San Francisco. From there we traveled to the 13th Korea National Jamboree where we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Korea Scouting Association. It was an honor to represent the Boy Scouts of America. Our group was small but interesting. We were led by 3 experienced Boy Scout leaders; Mr. Tran (Texas) is the BSA – International Executive, Mr. Geraghty (Illinois) acted as our Scoutmaster, and Mr. McIntosh (Utah) who was our Assistant Scoutmaster. All had traveled abroad with Boy Scouts and were able to coach us through our adventure. The Scouts who attended were experienced as well. Jacob is an Eagle Scout from Texas, Kimball is a Life Scout and ASPL from Utah, Josh is a Life Scout and SPL in his home troop in Ohio, Ben is a Star Scout and SPL from Michigan; and I am a Life Scout and ASPL from California. We met for the first time in San Francisco and became friends right away. After sightseeing in San Francisco for an evening, we were ready for our long flight to Korea. The Jamboree was held at the World Jamboree Site, Mt. Sorak, Gangwon Province. There were over 10,000 Scouts and Leaders from 40 countries. There were troops from the UK, Philippines, USA, and Korea that made up Troop 7 of the International Sub-camp. We shared an international evening where we all brought food from our home country to share. We brought popcorn and Tootsie Rolls. I had a great time trying new things. We were greeted in Seoul, Korea by 6 generous host families that opened their homes to us for 2 nights. They also treated us to a tour of the city. While in Seoul, we trekked down the River Walk, visited Gyeong Bok Gong Palace, shopped and tasted the food of Korea. It was great getting to know the people and customs of Korea. The Jamboree activities were divided into four separate areas: Ocean Forest, Sky Forest, Earth Forest, and Our Forest. Each forest had a collection of activities for us to choose from. We visited the Songjiho Sea activity area at the Ocean Forest; we climbed Ulsan Rock in the Sky Forest; tested our scouting skills and physical strength at Challenge Valley in the Earth Forest; and finally, we visited the Hwa’am Temple and climbed Su rock in Our Forest. We had a great time getting to know other Scouts from around the world. We also participated in a special program where we went to Sockcho City and completed an orienteering course. It was a challenge since none of us spoke or read Korean but we completed it using our map and compass experience from home. It was an amazing adventure. The people I met were so kind and helpful. The Scouting spirit is alive and well in Korea. I wish a “Happy 90th Anniversary” to Korea Scout Association. A special “Thank you” to Mr. Mike Downs and the Friends of Temescal for helping me to get to the Korea National Jamboree and Mr. Daniszewski of the California Inland Empire Council for approving my application. I had the trip of a lifetime and would encourage others to participate in international activities. It’s an experience I will never forget! Discover Prepaid Card - Now Available! As you know, agreeing to do one’s “Duty to God” is a part of the Scout Oath and Law and a requirement of achieving the Eagle Scout rank. Also, the BSA does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, nor do we have an agenda on this matter. Additionally, if a young man has a question about his sexuality, Scouting treats him with dignity and respect and refers him to his parents and other advisors. Based on his public statements that he does not agree with the “Declaration of Religious Principle,” local volunteer leadership determined he does not meet BSA’s membership standards and therefore he did not pass his Eagle Board of Review. After discussion with his family, yesterday he was informed that he is no longer eligible for membership in Scouting. Earlier this week his family created an online petition to draw attention to this matter. While we set policies that are best for our organization as a whole, we do not condemn those who wish to follow a different path. I want to assure you that in this case Scouting did not proactively ask for information about his sexual orientation, or made this decision lightly or without careful consideration.
