Volunteer to Help Decorate Floats for the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade

Phoenix Decoration Company Invites members (youth and adults) of the Boy Scouts of America to serve as volunteers for 2012 Tournament of Roses float building.

If this is your first time decorating a float, you will experience long hours and hard work, but take home wonderful memories. If this is a return experience, you already know about the exhilaration you feel as the float you helped create proudly turns the corner onto Colorado Blvd. Volunteering to work in the flower tents or to decorate a Tournament of Roses float is very exciting, but it requires long hours and tedious, repeated, detailed work.

Phoenix Decorating, the company that designed and built the 2010 BSA Tournament of Roses Parade float, have extended this invitation as a followup to the hard work and dedication that youth and volunteers showed during that process. Scouts, Scouters, Scout family and friends, who are 10 years of age or older, may volunteer.

Please send the registration form or any questions to ocbsadecorator@yahoo.com or mail to David Peterson, 2006 E Figwood Lane Anaheim, CA 92806. 714-319-8017
Registration will be on a first-come first-serve basis. To view the Frequently Asked Questions and Rules please email ocbsadecorator@yahoo.com

CIEC/BSA Hosted BSA Leave No Trace Master Educator Course

We had great weather and location was good at Lake Perris for our first ever CIEC hosted BSA Leave No Trace Master Educator course. Yes CIEC has had a Master Educator course before but it was in partnership with CIEC, BLM, Girl Scouts and NPS in 2007 at Camp Emerson. Thank-you so much to Powder Horn for sharing the site, Bob Hazelton of SGWA, Mona Daniels and Laurie Optebeke for making this experience a great one! We had our BSA Western Region Coordinator Howard Kern drop by and give us a session or two and also unveiled information about the First National Outdoor Ethics Conference at Quapaw Scout Reservation near Little Rock, Arkansas, October 2012. This conference is for all Outdoor Ethics Master Educators.

Make Sure Scouts Play Safe in the Snow

Head injuries sustained during winter activities are a major cause of children’s hospitalization. Therefore, the Winter Sports Safety section of the Guide to Safe Scouting was changed in 2009 to include the following passage: “Appropriate personal protective equipment is required for all activities. This includes the recommended use of helmets for all participants engaged in winter sports such as sledding and other sliding activities. The use of helmets is required for the following activities: downhill skiing, snowboarding, and operation of snowmobiles (full-face helmets).”

Essential precautions recommended by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons include the following:

  • Sledding should only be done in designated and approved areas.
  • Parents or adults must supervise children in sledding areas.
  • No one should sled headfirst.

Preferred precautions include these items:

  • Young children should wear a fitted helmet.
  • Sleds should have runners and a steering mechanism.
  • Sledding in the evening should be in well-lighted areas.
  • Plastic sheets or other materials that can be pierced by objects on the ground should not be used.
  • Sledders should wear layers of clothing.

The November-December issue of Scouting magazine (Page 12) includes an advisory entitled “Play Safe in the Snow,” which addresses this subject matter.

As winter begins, the BSA Health and Safety Team encourages you to place this on your council’s website and publish it in your council newsletter. This alert is posted on Scouting Safely at www.Scouting.org.

New Website Planned for Sea Scouts’ 100th Year

The National Sea Scout Committee has directed the development and unveiling of a new official website for the U.S. Sea Scout community. The new website will utilize the latest in online technology to deliver useful and timely information to Sea Scouts, leaders, parents, local council professionals, and the general public.

The new website will model the look and feel of the official BSA website, www.scouting.org, while retaining a distinct Sea Scouts, BSA image and functionality. There will be resources available to support local councils and professional staff in their efforts to expand and provide quality program support to their local ships.

Users will notice new features such as central calendaring for Sea Scout events and a useful live search feature that makes finding information on the site easy and hassle-free.

The beta version of the new site was introduced in November and can be accessed at www.newseascout.org. Both the existing and new beta sites will be maintained concurrently until the beta testing is complete. Eventually, the new site will be accessed solely through www.seascout.org.

We had our final Webelos shoot for Cub Archery on Saturday, 11-12-11. Check Out Updates From Team Summit!

Want updates on all things adventure from the Summit? Each month, Russell Smart, the volunteer team leader for all program activities at the 2013 National Jamboree, is going to feature one of the program elements that will be offered on the www.Summitblog.org

This month, Russell showcases one of the most popular activities at the Summit, whitewater rafting.

The New River Gorge National River, which is adjacent to the Summit property, offers some of the best whitewater in the country. Your trip may be on the section of the river that includes Class II and III rapids that are relatively mild in nature. Or it may be on a section that has rapids ranging from Class II to Class V. There will be more details on the variety of possible trips when the choices are posted for you to select.

And don’t forget, in late 2012, each of our registered youth participants will be given the chance to tell us what their most desirable curriculum choices would be for two half-day activities. The list will include multiple choices from each of our exciting program venues—climbing and rappelling, shooting sports, BMX and extreme sports, mountain biking, aquatics and scuba, nature and conservation, and even off-site outfitter adventures such as whitewater rafting and technical rock climbing.

For more updates from Russell, check out www.summitblog.org. And to register for the 2013 Jamboree, be sure to visit www.bsajamboree.org or www.summit.scouting.org.

    Boy Scout 2011 Rocket Rave!

Boy Scout and Cub Scout units from our council met this year for the annual "Rocket Rave" at Giant Rock, Landers CA. This years event was Nov. 11, 12 & 13. Over a 100 scouts, leaders and parents were at this years event. Camping started Friday night to wake up Saturday to some rain to keep the dust down. After the rain stopped Saturday morning a flag ceremony was held and the rest of the day was for the rockets! All groups meet at the airfield runway for an opening ceremony with 5 rockets decorated for each of our military organizations. After lift off of the 5 rockets the event started. The boys and parents began launching off rockets thru the afternoon. All sizes and shapes of rockets were launched that afternoon. Dinner was called in the eve where the boys ate and adults had a dutch oven dinner. After dinner Troop 110 hosted the campfire. Campfire was great!! After campfire the night launch rockets were shot off with LED and lighting objects to light up the sky to finish the event! Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to next years event. Special thanks goes out to Troop 110 and 40 of Arrowhead District for putting it together!!!
