Monday Memo

Good day and welcome to our November 16th Monday Memo
Fall Recruiting Results
Over 1,000 new Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers joined a unit in September & October! Our fall roundup plan was built around access to our schools and ensuring that every youth hears the Scouting story and has an opportunity to join. It?s never too late to build or maintain strong relationships with public, private and home schools in our quest to enroll additional youth. Great Scouting adventures are awaiting our youth-will you help to ensure they are invited to join?
Current Scouts can earn the coveted BSA 100th Anniversary recruiter patch. It?s never too late for youth to join Scouting. Every youth that recruits another into Scouting is eligible for a free patch, compliments of the Council Membership Committee. Hall of Fame Recruiter form
Cub Scout Recruiting
The following are some ideas for conducting follow-up recruiting efforts:
-
Ask the current parents in your pack to help invite prospective members-you just need to ask them.
-
Re-flyer schools and churches.
-
Ask your local religious institution to have an article in their weekly bulletin.
-
Increase your visibility by participating in local community activities such as fall festivals and holiday parades.
-
Ask your school, chartering organization or religious institution to have a static display of pictures, brochures and crafts from your Pack.
-
Send an article and photograph about your recent Pack activity to your local newspaper. Work with your local library to hang posters and distribute your Pack information sheet.
Boy Scout Recruiting
Each troop in the council is encouraged to hold an open house-type recruiting event for boys that never had the opportunity to join Scouts before. The best way to recruit Boy Scouts is by current Scouts inviting their friends to join. Each Scout that recruits a buddy can earn the BSA 100th Anniversary recruiter patch.
Venturing Crew Recruiting
The Venturing open house is a recruitment event where prospective new Venture Crew members enjoy a ?taste? of what membership in the Crew will be like. This co-ed program has the best recruiting results when the current crew members invite their friends to join.
Whatever your Scouting unit?s recruiting needs are, the Council and District Membership Committees are here to support you with flyer, posters, applications, recruiting incentives, and ?best recruiting methods.?
The Council Membership Staff Advisor is Tracy Carroll. She can be reached at 909-983-4534, ext. 303 or trsmith@bsamail.org
Adventure Base 100 is Coming Our Way!
This winter, millions will be able to witness and experience Scouting like never before! Created specifically for the 100th Anniversary, Adventure Base 100 will tour the country to give people an exciting, hands-on view of the history and future of the Boy Scouts of America.
Starting at the Rose Bowl in January and ending at the Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade, this magnificent traveling exhibit will stop in more than 40 cities to share the Scouting experience . Each stop is designed to serve many councils at once. So, for the Rose Bowl stop, the San Gabriel Valley Council, as well as Orange County, Los Angeles Area, West Los Angeles County, Long Beach, Verdugo and California Inland Empire Councils will all work together to bring this amazing campus to life.
?We believe this tour has the potential to positively impact Scouting in our community in many ways, including membership recruitment,? said Joe Daniszewski, Scout Executive for California Inland Empire Council.
At each stop, Adventure Base 100 will unfold into a 10,000 square foot campus of interactive and immersive Scout-related experiences.
?The goal is to bring Scouting to life in a relevant and meaningful way that will connect to current Scouts and Scouters and appeal to people not currently involved with Scouting, but who might be interested in joining,? said Janice Babineaux, director of the National Scouting Museum and BSA Adventure Base 100 project lead.
The campus features a recruitment and registration tent, the ?Go Scouting!? Dome ? a multi-sensory experience that uses an IMAX-like domed screen, smells, and sounds to make visitors feel like they are a part of the action ? a ropes course and zip line experience, traveling Scouting museum, stage, time capsule, VIP tent, green screen experience, Scout store, and sponsor tents. There will also be a virtual component.
?Besides the obvious public awareness opportunities, there?s a huge potential audience that we can talk to about membership, volunteering, fundraising, and getting our alumni involved with Scouting again,? said Joe Daniszewski.
When people enter the campus, their contact information and other data will be collected. Our hope is to engage them in Scouting beyond the Adventure Base 100 experience.
Volunteers and programming ideas for the campus? stage will be needed, so please contact Matt Flanagan, council 100th Anniversary Committee Chair at mflanagan@sheltons.com, or contact your district 100th Anniversary Chair to learn how you can be a part of something great in Southern California!

Boy Scouts of America 2010 Celebrate Scouting Stamp
Celebrate Scouting with the Boy Scouts of America and the United States Postal Service!
In 2010, the year of our 100th Anniversary, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will receive an incredible honor from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the form of a "Celebrate Scouting" stamp. A tribute to the impact of a century of Scouting on the American landscape, the stamp will become widely available during the summer of 2010.
Since 1910, Scouting has served young people and their families through a program of values-based leadership and character. Continuing the BSA's long tradition of service and good turns, we will bring deeper purpose to the Celebrate Scouting stamp by sending letters and care packages to the military men and women serving our country overseas. Also included in this effort are the many veterans who have honorably served our country throughout the years. Join us in the effort!
You can start today by visiting the USPS Web site, where you will find important guidelines and information for keeping in touch with our troops overseas. And, you?ll find a toolkit of information to support your efforts, below!
Scouts, BSA staff, volunteers ? or anyone who?d like to join our effort ? are invited to explore the following resources. There are an array of tools to help you develop a thoughtful letter or care package that reminds our troops how much we appreciate and value their service.
The Scuba Diving merit badge earn date is December 1, 2009
The Boy Scouts of America is pleased to announce the release of the Scuba Diving merit badge. The official earn date of this merit badge is December 1, 2009. Pamphlets are in the NDC and available for local council service center and scoutstuff.org orders - just in time for Christmas!
The first new merit badge in over three years, Scuba Diving reflects the new direction of BSA to develop merit badges based on youth/Scout input to assure relevance and excitement around the merit badge offering. This merit badge, developed in association with PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), leverages our spirit of outdoor adventure and expands our aquatics offering. More than 84 percent of Scouts surveyed were interested in the merit badge and recommended that BSA adopt it.
Key facts you need to know about the merit badge are as follows:
- Completing the Scuba Diving merit badge will result in the boy achieving an open water certification enabling him to dive around the world with the appropriate supervision, based on his age.
- There are two important roles for this merit badge - the merit badge counselor and a certified dive instructor.
- Sometimes this may be the same person.
- More likely, the counselor will be an existing BSA adult member.
- Always the instructor will be one certified by one of a number of instructional agencies.
- The instructor does NOT have to be a BSA member.
- Earning the Scuba Diving merit badge is open to all Boy Scout-age youth. There are, however, limitations based on age with respect to how deep and with whom a boy can dive. These limitations vary by certifying organization.
- Completion of the Swimming merit badge is a requirement of the merit badge and must be completed prior to entering into scuba training portion of the requirements.
- Boys with a current open water certification will NOT have to recertify in order to earn the merit badge. They will, however, have to have completed the Swimming merit badge, present their certification to the merit badge counselor and complete all the other requirements.
- There are three important pieces of information which must be fully reviewed by the merit badge counselor prior to approving any Scout for the merit badge: the merit badge requirements, the notes to counselor and the scuba policy of the Guide to Safe Scouting.
Attached you will find a locally customizable and printable PDF file announcing the merit badge, showcasing the cover, and outlining the notes to counselor and requirements. The Guide to Safe Scouting is available at http://www.scouting.org/healthandsafety/gss.aspx. Have fun and dive safe!
Troop 309 Color Guard for the 39th Chino Band Review
Troop 309 represented scouting and our council well by serving as Color Guard for the 39th Chino Band Review on November 7, 2009. They scouts not only carried the US and California flag but the City Flag (on direct loan from the Mayor's office) and instead of their Troop flag they proudly presented the 100 year BSA flag.
This is the second year the Troop chartered at Gateway Community Church in Chino has been honored and asked to begin the band review by presenting the colors. The troop's color guard team has been in demand recently perforning at the City of Chino Mexican Independance Day Celebration in September and the Ontario Relay for life in July.
Troop 309's color guard team was under the scout leadership of Cory Rosas and Brenden Schenk both life scouts. Adult leaders were Michael Rosas and Steve Banneck ASM's.
Way to go Troop 309!
Thanks to Scoutmaster Jeff McEntire for sending in the news and great pictures!
Planting a tree for BSA?s future
Our weather couldn?t have been better to kick off our Generations Connection program last week. Bright sunny skies greeted us as we gathered with our friends from the Arbor Day Foundation for a ceremonial planting of one of our official 100th Anniversary trees in front of the national office.
We were also honored to have our 100th Anniversary Chairman, Randall Stephenson, Chairman, CEO and President of AT&T, with us to turn some soil as we launched this important initiative.
Generations Connection is more than just planting trees. This program honors the tradition and positive impact of Scouting in American families. Through this program, we are working to ensure that our Scouts of today continue to hand down the legacy of Scouting to future generations.
That?s not all. For every centennial tree that is purchased from the Arbor Day Foundation, a corresponding tree will be planted in the Flathead National Forest in Montana. That area has been designated as the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Forest ? how incredible is that?
You could see the energy and excitement in everyone?s faces as we gathered with John Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation and took turns with our shovels to plant our 100th Anniversary tree. Check out these photos.
What really made this event special was the participation of the Peter McNabb family from Dallas. They are three generations deep into Scouting, and serve as a wonderful example of how Scouting is truly an experience the whole family can enjoy. Scouting in the McNabb family has roots that stretch back to World War II, so you can see how their story gets to the heart of what the Generations Connection is all about.
This is just the beginning of our living legacy that will last for generations. Through the simple act of planting a tree today, we are able to leave something behind that can give back for our next 100 years.
More details explaining how you can take part in this wonderful program are available on the Generations Connection page at the 100 Years of Scouting Web site.
Let?s all participate in growing deeper roots for Scouting, and think about what that means for our young people.

Warm thoughts, prayers and remembrances
Jessica Hankins has surgery scheduled later this month. She is the High Desert Training Chair, former District Executive, Camp Wiley Business Manager and an all around great Scouter. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
