Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our November 23rd Monday Memo

Thanksgiving Thoughts

As we stop and count our blessings on Thanksgiving, I give thanks each and every day for our 17,101 youth, 8,944 adult volunteer leaders, 20 staff members and the tens of thousands of scouting supporters throughout our California Inland Empire Council. Each and every day we embrace the " words to live by ": trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thirfty, brave, clean and reverent. We live by the 12 points of the Scout Law with grace and strength.

Almighty Father, Bless us, Bless our families, friends and neighbors, Bless all those serving in our armed forces. Comfort those in distress.

Keep us in the palm of Your hand. Amen.
Happy Thanksgiving!

A Century of Values Nationwide Road Tour team brings Boy Scout 100th Anniversary preview to Redlands

Driving a uniquely decorated RV and wearing the familiar green uniform of Boy Scout adult leaders, a team of scouting volunteers from Michigan brought "A Century of Values" to the California Inland Empire Council on tuesday, November 17th. The presentation of a special 24"x36" mural depicting important individuals, events and symbols from Scouting History was made to Scout Executive Joe Daniszewski.

According to "A Century of Values" tour Advisor Frank Mallon, the visit was designed to thank local officials and volunteers for their commitment and dedication to the community's youth while highlighting the positive impact the Scouting traditions have had during the past 100 years. Frank also said "Our goal was to clebrate the values instilled in young people which were developed by adults through training, example, and the Scout Oath and Law."

"We are very excited to be included on the tour stop" said Scout Executive, Joe Daniszewski, who joined the council in January. "This provides the perfect opportunity to kickoff the centennial celebration followed by the Boy Scouts of America Float in the Rose Parade. This are exciting times for Scouting from the past, present, and for the future."

Pack 614 collects over 2,000 pounds of food for local pantries!

Cub Scout Pack 614 held a ?Scouting for Food? drive on November 7th that collected more than 2,000 pounds of food for local charities.

The scouts, who range in age from 6 to 10 years old, in cooperation with the Albertson?s on Winchester Road in Murrieta, passed out flyers at the grocery store and encouraged shoppers to purchase extra food for needy families. The community overwhelmingly gave their support, donating a total of about 2,200 pounds of food over six hours. The food was shared equally between the Temecula-Murrieta Community Pantry in Temecula, and the Murrieta Food Bank in Murrieta.

?The pantries were overwhelmed by the amount of food that was delivered,? said Ken Nordstrom, Assistant Cubmaster of Pack 614 and chair of the event. ?They are in desperate need of food right now, so this really helped. Our boys and their parents did an awesome job, and the community responded.?

Located in Temecula/Murrieta, Pack 614 is sponsored by the Murrieta Rotary Club and is based out of Buchanan Elementary School.   The Cub Scouts participate in many community service projects like this throughout the year, as part of the Cub Scout promise ?to help other people.?

Welcome to the most recent evolution of Cub Scouts, Cub Scouts 2010!

Cub Scouts 2010 is a piloted and successful method of delivering the existing Cub Scout program that is handbook-based and focuses on den activities leading to youth advancement and higher retention. The Cub Scouts 2010 Overview Brochure includes information on the pilot, its results, what changes with Cub Scouts 2010 and how the changes benefit the Scouting community.

Cub Scouts 2010 is supported by a new leader resource, the Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide. This new resource contains all the information a den leader or Cubmaster needs to deliver the planned program. Check out the Sample Meeting Resource Guide.

Bob Mazzuca received one of Scouting?s highest honors

I could not be more proud to share with you some very special news. Last night at a ceremony in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca received one of Scouting?s highest honors ? the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. The award was given at the 60th Annual Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner in a city where Bob served as Scout Executive for 10 years and that holds a special place in his heart. Surrounded by old friends and family, it was a perfectly fitting place to recognize him in this way.

There is so much I can say about why Bob is so deserving of this award. Bob's sincere dedication to living the tenets of Scouting has had a profound impact on countless lives and communities. We are all benefiting from his steady leadership and tireless efforts to strengthen our organization so our next 100 years are even better than the first. And, there is nothing better than seeing him light up a room when he speaks about his passion for Scouting and the tremendous value it brings.

Bob became Chief Scout Executive in September 2007 after more than four decades of service to Scouting.  It has been my great pleasure as his volunteer partner to collaborate with him as he invests all of his energy to build the character and integrity of America?s youth through the work of the BSA.  Bob has traveled the country to share his vision for the organization, inspire local councils, and support local efforts. He is a great ambassador within our own family and far, far beyond. And, we are all proud to call him, "Chief."

Since the Distinguished Eagle Award was created in 1969, fewer than 2,000 of our 2 million Eagle Scouts have received this honor. It is reserved for very special recognition of those who make an extraordinary difference through their own personal commitment to the Scout law.  For his lifetime of service to Scouting, we congratulate our newest Distinguished Eagle Scout, Mr. Bob Mazzuca.

Yours in Scouting,
John Gottschalk, President, Boy Scouts of America
