The Creation of American Indian Heritage Month (Brief History)
What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.
Early Proponents
One of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the "First Americans" and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kans., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.
The year before this proclamation was issued, Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian, rode horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Indians. On December 14, 1915, he presented the endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House. There is no record, however, of such a national day being proclaimed.
State Celebrations
The first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of N.Y. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday.
Heritage Months
In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994. Read More

First Eagle Scout for Troop 45 of Highland
 | Sean M. Bentley, from Highland was honored at his Eagle Court of Honor on Saturday Nov. 27 at the First United Methodist Church of Highland. He is the son of Michael and Miyoung Bentley. He is the first Eagle Scout for Boy Scout Troop 45 of Highland, which is chartered by The First United Church of Highland. Troop 45 is celebrating their first year in November of being a chartered Boy Scout Unit by the UMCH. His Eagle Ceremony was attended by his troop scouts, leaders, family and friends. His older brother Andrew Bentley also a Eagle Scout from Troop 24 took leave from The United States Navy to attend his brothers ceremony. Andrew is currently a E-3 and going to school in Pensacola, Florida to become a Air Traffic Controller for the United States Navy. Andrew presented the Eagle Charge at Sean's ceremony. Sean earned 50 merit badges, the BSA Lifeguard and the National Outdoors Award for Aquatics before he made the rank of Eagle. His Eagle project was to remove a old fountain and build a shade structure in its place at the First United Methodist Church. Sean and his team recorded over 800 hours working on the project. The project was completed in September of this year. The shade structure will be used by the Nursery School at the church, Girl Scouts and other groups. Sean is a senior at Redlands East Valley High School. He is planning to attend college after he graduates next year to pursue a career in computer programing. Sean would like to give special thanks to Terry Bryan of Troop 110 for being the Master of Ceremony and Christa Jenson for decorating for the Ceremony!! |
Combined Federal Campaign
The Combined Federal Campaign is currently underway for employees that work for the Federal Government. Workplace donations and designated giving are a great way to contribute to our council. Your gifts help us to provide quality programs and services to the youth of our Inland Empire. Please keep us in mind as you are selecting agencies for your charitable giving. The federal campaign agency code for the California Inland Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America is 29545. Thank you for all that you do to serve our scouts!
Friends of Scouting
Growing up has never been easy. Each generation faces its own concerns and pressures. For over 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has provided young people with experiences that prepare them to meet challenges and conquer them. Character, self-reliance, responsibility and leadership – Scouting provides activities that are in sync with the interests of today’s youth, but instill these timeless values.
Friends of Scouting is the annual fundraising campaign to raise the operating funds necessary to provide a quality Scouting program in the California Inland Empire Council, BSA. Every year there is a need for financial support to existing programs, developing programs and to support our Council camps.
This is the essence of the Friends of Scouting campaign, raising money to help the California Inland Empire Council defray the actual cost of delivering and running the Scouting program. Special events and fundraisers pay only a portion of the cost. Give Scouts and volunteer Scouters your support by helping the Scouting program with your pledge.
Only through your support can we keep the Scouting light burning brightly into the future. Why should you support Scouting? Because your gift to the 2010 Friends of Scouting campaign really does keep the light burning. Help us guide the youth of this generation as they grow to become the leaders of the next.
If you have any questions, please contact me, Joe Daniszewski at 909 -793-2463 x 120. Thank you in advance for your gracious and generous support.

Veteran Awards
The veteran award is an adult recognition. However, tenure earned as a youth may be included in the total number of years registered. After 5 years of registered service in the Boy Scouts of America, an adult may, upon application, receive the designation of “Veteran,” provided the person agrees to live up to the Scouting obligations: to keep local Scouting authorities in the community in which residing informed as to availability for service; and further, to be active in the promotion of the cause of Scouting as circumstances and conditions permit. Service in Scouting organizations other than the Boy Scouts of America does not count toward veteran recognition. An individual must currently be registered member of the Boy Scouts of America in order to receive an award. Veteran Award Application
Tahquitz District Scouting for Food Report
The Tahquitz district had it's final food drop off on Nov. 20th at the Salvation Army Church in Murrieta.
Boys and Adults from Troop 500 and Pack 500 (both chartered by the Salvation Army) sorted over 5000 pounds of food that was collected by various units in the district. The food collected will go to help feed many families in the area for Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season.
We also had another 4000 pounds of food collected by local packs and troops delivered to other help organizations in the valley including; Hope in Lake Elsinore, Temecula Food Pantry, St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta, Murrieta Methodist Church, and 2 LDS churches in Murrieta.
We had a total of 614 youth, 225 adults from 24 units contributing 1525 hours to help collect and sort over 9600 pounds of food.
Thank you to all who stepped up to help our community in these tough times.

Unit Rechartering:
The unit charter renewal process is essential to the continued growth of the Boy Scouts of America. Internet Rechartering is an Internet-based application that is indirectly connected to the council's ScoutNET membership data and provides the ability for unit leaders to complete the paperwork portion of rechartering from their home (office, etc) over the Internet. It’s easy, convenient, and accurate because you enter the information yourself!
How it Works:
Each unit should have received its charter renewal packet; the packet will include information for Internet rechartering, including an access code especially for the unit. The unit selects an adult to complete the online process. This renewal processor uses the access code to log onto the Internet rechartering website, selecting to start the process with current ScoutNET data or data from unit-management software. At any time, the renewal processor can suspend the electronic rechartering process and return later to the last completed screen.
The system lets you enter new members, renew current members, and update information for any registrant. When completed, the new unit roster is submitted to ScoutNET and a Unit Charter Renewal Report Package is printed. This package includes the unit charter application. Acquire the signatures for the application and send it, the rest of the package, any new youth and adult applications, all fees and turn into your district at the pre-determined “Charter Turn In” Night.
All BSA policies are enforced throughout the system, so what you enter is sure to meet all requirements. If you have any questions or comments, contact your district executive or our Registrar Chrissy Eads, at 909-793-2463, ext. 114 who will be glad to help out.
2010 Centennial Quality Units:
Packs, troops, teams and crews have the ability to earn the 2010 Centennial Quality Unit ribbon for their flag. Please meet with your Unit Commissioner to review and complete the 2010 Centennial Quality Unit Form. Return it along with your recharter packet.
