SAN BERNARDINO: Scouts Help Collect Five Tons of Food

Boy Scouts from the Inland area helped The Salvation Army’s San Bernardino Corps feed hungry people by collecting more than 51/2 tons of food over two weekends.

“That is a lot of food, but we need it,” said Major Daniel Henderson, corps officer. “We will be using this food primarily in the gift boxes we’ll give to area families in need at Christmas, but it will also help supplement our daily meal program, including special holiday meals we are serving on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.”

By standing in front of Stater Bros. stores on Nov. 2 and Nov. 9, the Boy Scouts collected 11,004 pounds of food. Although this is the first time they’ve weighed it, it may not be the first year they’ve collected this much. They have collected tons of food for the Salvation Army and other charities with meal programs for the past several years.

“There are a lot of needy people out there, so it may not go far, but hopefully it will help,” said Denise Wampole, Inland Empire Scouting for Food coordinator.

Boy Scouts from San Bernardino, Rialto, Colton, Highland, Grand Terrace, Fontana and Bloomington collected the as part of the Scouts’ nationwide Scouting for Food event. Read More....

Coat/Blanket Drive , Blessing Bags

Pack 257 in conjunction with Troop 257 from The California Inland Empire Council, did a community Coat and Blanket Drive. We handed out the items to local homeless residents, shelters and civic organizations. We also did a Pack Blessing Bag organization. A local store donated goods for the pack to buy and arrange Blessing Bags for the less fortunate. We assembled 45 Bags that included food, water, hygiene products, and other various necessities and a note from the scout for good cheer.

The scouts were able to learn what service is really all about. The projects not only started conversations about the good of humankind, but also got the scouts thinking globally. Pack 257 are true Messengers of Peace.

Gary Butler appointed deputy Chief Scout Executive and COO of the Boy Scouts of America

The new year is nearly upon us, and we're taking significant steps to move Scouting forward. I'm pleased to announce that Gary Butler has been appointed to serve as the deputy Chief Scout Executive and chief operating officer of the Boy Scouts of America effective January 1, 2014.

Since becoming assistant Chief Scout Executive for council operations in 2009, Gary has given leadership to the overall delivery of the Scouting program through six departments and four regions. All national support and oversight of the more than 280 local Scout councils are coordinated and directed through the office of the assistant Chief Scout Executive for council operations.

While maintaining the current reporting structure, the promotion to chief operating officer expands Gary's authority to provide leadership and direction to all aspects of operations of the National Council, subject to the authority and direction of the Chief Scout Executive and the National Executive Board.

Gary began his professional Scouting career in 1980 as a district executive in Long Island, New York, and then served as senior district executive and finance director in Long Island; field director in New Jersey; and Scout executive in Kingston, New York, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Buffalo, New York. In 2005, he joined the National Council staff as the director of the Finance Support Division and was named national director of the Council Solutions Group in 2008.

An avid sailor, Gary grew up in Rhode Island, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award and Vigil Honor. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and a graduate of Providence College. Gary and his wife have three children, one of whom is an Eagle Scout, and three grandchildren.

Gary brings a unique skill set in strategic planning and organizational management to the BSA. If you have had the opportunity to work with Gary directly, you already know the passion he has for our organization on a professional and personal level. With his dedicated leadership, I know Gary will continue to successfully guide the operations aspect of Scouting as our deputy Chief Scout Executive and chief operating officer. Please join me in congratulating him on this new role.

Jewish Scouting and the Holocaust

The bus, accompanied by two cars, pulled into the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ National Guard Armory in Lansing about 9:30 p.m. April 18, after a three-hour
ride from Traverse City. In these sparse surroundings, a life-changing 24 hours began for 25 Scouts and 18 adult leaders, all members of the Indian Drum Lodge of the Order of the Arrow.

These young men were chosen for a special task — providing the honor guard and escorting Metro Detroit Holocaust survivors into the rotunda of the state capitol for the annual Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony. None of the Scouts are Jewish. Few had even met Jewish people. Not one had ever met a Holocaust survivor.

For the last nine years, Metro Detroit Jewish Scouts have done the honors, but the numbers had been dwindling. A conversation with Susan Herman, director of the Lansing-based Michigan Jewish Conference, who plans the annual capitol event, and a number of Detroit Scout leaders led to choosing Scouts from a different venue, one that offered a unique challenge and an incredible opportunity.

They decided that for this year’s ceremony, Scouts would be invited from rural out-state communities. The opportunity to introduce the survivors Read More....

Boeing Employee Matching Gift Program

Dear  Scouters:

Did you know your volunteer hours can be turned into a cash gift to the California Inland Empire Council  Boy Scouts of America through Boeing’s Employee Matching Gift program?
This means any Scouting based volunteering in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, of just 25 hours per period, will allow you to ask Boeing to donate $250 to the California Inland Empire Council, up to an annual maximum of 600 hours / $6000 per employee. Boeing will send the Gift each quarter.

With three easy steps you can multiply your volunteer efforts and help make a direct and lasting contribution to the development of the youth in this county.

  1. Log into Boeing’s Total Access Website, click on My Community Giving, click on Gift Match, click on Record Volunteer Hours
  2. Select “California Inland Empire Council, Redlands, California”
  3. Enter your volunteer hours (min 25-max 600) with a description of the effort, select “Request Gift Match”. In the Designation line, please enter your “District name” and “FOS” (Friends of Scouting). By agreement with Boeing these donations cannot be credited to an individual unit or project.

More than 18,000 Scouts are counting on the California Inland Empire  Council, Boy Scouts of America to deliver challenging activities and educational programs that develop strong leadership skills, ethical decision making and taking personal responsibility.

I hope you will invest in the future of these youth by following these easy steps.

C.I.E.C. Staff Update

Josh Fisher, our Council Program Director, has accepted a Facility Management position with the YMCA in Big Bear, CA. Josh has done a great job working with volunteers and staff in improving all aspects of the Boseker Scout Reservation. He also built great Camp Staffs for Camp Emerson and Camp Wiley, paving the way for many seasons of great Scouting.

Josh is a great example of the fourth point of the Scout Law: A Scout is Friendly. He is a Servant Leader and will be a great addition to the YMCA Staff.

His last day was December 15, 2013. We wish him well.

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------------

"Great ideals and principles do not live from generation to generation just because they are right, nor even because they have been carefully legislated. Ideas and principles continue from generation to generation only when they are built into the hearts of children as they grow up."

    ~  George S. Benson

Lord,

Please help me to live the golden rule. To "do unto others" as I'd have them "do unto me," and to love others, as You ask that I also love myself. For, when I love myself, as You love me, I can more easily have love and compassion for another.

May I show respect to others, as I remember to respect myself. May I focus on the good in others, as I recall the good within myself. May I have patience with others, as I practice patience with myself. May I forgive others, as You forgive me, and ask that I forgive myself.

May this circle of love from You to me and to all of my brothers and sisters Embrace and uplift us, in this world and evermore.

Amen.
