California Inland Empire Council Monday Memo |

Welcome to our January 2nd, 2012 Monday Memo |
 | The Debut of a Song "On My Honor" The lights dimmed again in the vast, comfortable, air conditioned auditorium and 3,000 professional Scout leaders and their wives attending the 8th National Scout Executives Conference at Indiana State University readied themselves for the next Regional stunt. The spotlight played on the slowly rising orcestral platform and illuminated the bright red caps of some forty men whose torsos were proudly displayed in gleaming white T-shirts emblazoned with a blackbearded Paul Bunyan. Several men were emulating the famous Paul, slashing chips from rough logs as they swung their axes. Behind the men were evergreen trees -- a truly effective and colorful scene. For the writer, it was a scene to be long remembered, especially as the group of men swung into their songs. One of these was, in effect, the Scout Oath, set to music. It was sung through once, then hummed softly as Robert Bugge repeated the Scout Oath. It was a new song beautifully staged and competently sung. The applause that followed, as the platform disappeared into auditorium depths, was a genuine tribute to the nation's smallest region and to a new song. Click Here to read more and view sheet music |

A Scoutmaster and Loving It
By Ron Hegwood
After a 40-year career with the BSA, Ron Hegwood was determined “to do just I pleased in retirement.” He and his wife, Sue, would travel; he would play all the golf that he wanted; and they would concentrate on being world-class grandparents for two grandsons.
It worked just like that for five years. Then I became restless.
Finally I gave in to a gnawing need to serve somewhere. It was a logical move to get active in volunteer Scouting. In fact, I decided to become a Scoutmaster.
In January of ’08, I organized Troop 50 at Aldersgate Mission in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Aldersgate is sponsored by our church, Main Street Methodist, as an effort to provide after-school and summertime care and tutoring for inner-city children. Troop 50 membership ranges from 15 to 20 Scouts. With one exception, all of the boys come from homes headed by a single mother.
As Scoutmaster of Troop 50, I am committed to the concept of each Scout earning his own way. Believe me, that can be an almost impossible challenge. Knowing we needed extra financial support, I turned to some of my BSA retiree buddies and a few close friends. Their response has been humbling and overwhelming. Thank you!
The Troop 50 committee is comprised of my golfing buddies, and they are the best.
Troop 50 has a camping trip or an activity each month, and has attended our council’s summer camp for the past three summers. Scouts earned 23 merit badges this summer. Troop 50 now has nine First Class Scouts and seven Second Class Scouts. We began this year with all nonswimmers in the troop, and now all of our Scouts can swim at least 50 yards.
My wife, Sue, has been a champion-transporting the boys to activities, providing support in many ways, and often opening our home to the Scouts. Troop 50 loves Sue’s cooking, especially the cookies and brownies. Sue also keeps patches and buttons on uniforms and engages personally with each Scout.
One of our favorite things has been taking Troop 50 Scouts on a grocery shopping trip (First Class regular) for a campout…..What a blast!
As we travel through the inner-city neighborhoods going to and from meetings, Troop 50 members love to engage people on the streets. They roll down the windows, stick out their heads and chant: “Hey! Look out! Boy Scouts coming through. Troop 5-0 coming through.
Frankly, I love that chat.
As I made this commitment, I was sure that I would be a “super Scoutmaster” with a model Scout troop. I have known a lot of “super Scoutmasters” and, frankly, I am not one of them. Only time and health will determine my continued service with Troop 50. Regardless, I am well aware of who has benefited the most from this experience-me!
Six Stick Together from Cubs Scouts to Eagle Scouts
By Rachel McGrath
 | Six young men who grew up together through Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts received the Eagle Award at a Thousand Oaks ceremony. Lukas Fancy, 19, of Thousand Oaks; Blake Vollandt, 18, of Agoura Hills; Steven Singh, 19, of Westlake Village; Conor Kinford, 17, of Agoura Hills; Bryce Leafman, 17, of Agoura Hills; and Giancarlo Hamner, 18, of Thousand Oaks received their awards recently at the Grant R. Brimhall Library in front of family and friends. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scout program, and 5 percent of Boy Scouts earned the rank in 2010, according to the Boy Scouts of America. The six belong to Troop 1000 Malibu, led by scoutmaster Nancy Berk, Fancy's mother. Berk was the boys' first den mother when they joined the Scout program in first grade and has mentored them through the years. "I've seen tremendous growth, and I am proud of all of them. It's truly been a labor of love," she said as tears welled up in her eyes. Click Here to Read More |
