Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our December 21st Monday Memo

First Look at the BSA's 100th Anniversary Float

The Boy Scouts of America and parades go together like New Year?s Day and the Rose Bowl. In January, all four unite in a moment you can?t miss.

To celebrate the BSA?s 100th Anniversary, the Orange County, Los Angeles Area, and San Gabriel Valley councils have joined the National Council to create a one-of-a-kind float for the magnificent Tournament of Roses Parade.

In just over two weeks, the world will be watching as the colorful celebration begins in Pasadena, Calif. That?s when most everyone will see the BSA?s stunning float for the first time. But Cracker Barrel readers get a sneak peek at this artwork on wheels today.

Thanks to these great photos from Dennis Kuba, an assistant Scoutmaster whose troop is helping build the float, you get a rare behind-the-scenes look at the unfinished creation. (Follow the jump to see two more great photos.) To see the final product in action, tune in to the big event on New Year?s Day.

The parade starts at 8 a.m. (PST) Jan. 1, 2010. See it on ABC, NBC, HGTV, the Travel Channel, or, in Spanish, on Univision.

Pasadena is also where the BSA will launch Adventure Base 100, the traveling Scouting experience that visits more than 40 cities across the country in 2010. To find out when it?s rolling into your area, http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/AdventureBase100.aspx

Old Baldy District Honors Max Williams

Max Williams is a good Scout. The Upland architect has supported the organization for almost three decades. And for those many years of service and caring, local Boy Scouts are honoring him as their 2009 California Inland Empire Council, Old Baldy District, Distinguished Citizen.

The award is given to individuals who routinely illustrate long-held Scouting characteristics within the community, according to Phil Velez, council district director. Those characteristics include being trustworthy, loyal and honest each and every day. ?Max Williams is overqualified for this award,? Velez said. ?He has been committed to providing a quality Scouting program for our local youth for a long time, and it is a great honor to be able to give this award to Max.?  That?s pretty much the same sentiment held by those who have known him for years.

?Max served with me on the board of the YMCA (now the Scheu Family YMCA in Upland) when we decided to move ahead with plans to build a facility for the community. He was one of the first volunteers to offer to help. He did all the architectural work and didn?t charge a thing,? said Bill Landecena, a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen recognition himself. ?Speaking from my part of my experiences with Max, he?s always there, willing to help. The community is lucky to have him.?

Williams also is an Upland Foothill Kiwanis member and a former board member of the former Foothill Independent Bank in Upland. ?I can honestly say that he is one of the finest board members we ever had (on the bank). Upland really is a better place because of him,? Landecena said.

Another longtime friend is Dale Eazell, who will be the emcee for the evening?s program. ?I?m involved in all of this because Max was chosen to be honored. Believe me, it?s my honor to honor him,? said Eazell, who has known him for 15 years. ?I have nothing but a tremendous regard for this man and his wife, Marilyn. He?s helped the Inland Valley Recovery Services, the YMCA and the Foothill Family Shelter. The list goes on. I can?t tell you all of the charities they have been involved in during the years, and they keep giving back. The guy is one great guy.?

Invitations have been mailed, and organizers are expecting more than 350 people. ?It?s awesome to be able to work with Max and now to have a chance to help the community honor him,? Velez said. He said Williams has spent years supporting Troop 601 at Upland Methodist Church. Williams? son is an Eagle Scout, the highest achievement a Scout can earn. He said Max Williams has supported the community both financially and with his time for so many years that it is time the community says thank you.

The coveted honor has been given in past years to such individuals as retired businessman Bill Landecena, Ontario Councilman Alan Wapner, Bob Cable of Cable Airport, San Bernardino County Supervisor Paul Biane and Upland Councilman Ray Musser. Many of them will attend the festivities planned Thursday in the Avalon Ballroom at Fairplex in Pomona. Dinner and silent and live auctions will supplement the program, which also serves as a major fundraiser for the Boy Scouts.

Proceeds help sustain the many programs offered throughout the extensive council, which has served young people for almost 100 years.

Honor your Scout Leaders on BSA?s 100th Anniversary!

Have your leaders been active in Scouting for 5 years or more?

Are they also active in their faith community?

Perhaps they?re eligible for an Adult Religious Recognition. The adult awards are joint recognitions by local BSA councils and congregations. These awards are by nomination only. The process involves filling out a nomination form, writing a letter of nomination, securing signatures, and planning the presentation ceremony. Please note that each award has its own eligibility requirements so you need to review them carefully. Several nomination forms are available at www.praypub.org. Scout Sunday is coming up quickly. Plan now to submit a nomination!

Your leaders are giving their time to serve young people. Salute your leaders and encourage them in their service by nominating them to receive a national recognition!

Scouting: Continuing the Journey

What an incredible time for our organization! For two years now, we have been talking about the significance of our 100th Anniversary Celebration and the fact that we simply cannot miss the opportunity to reflect on our great past and lay the foundation for the next 100 years. Now, on the cusp of our centennial year, all of the pieces are in place for a memorable and meaningful 2010! You can feel the energy and excitement all across the country. We could not be prouder!

In just a few weeks we?ll take to the national stage with a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.  In conjunction, we?ll also unveil the truly spectacular Adventure Base 100 on its first stop of a yearlong, nationwide tour.  It will be a spectacular beginning to what is sure to be a stellar year.

As you all know, we?ve become more assertive in telling the Scouting story?our Scouting story. And we?ve only just begun. We cannot share the details just yet, but stay tuned for an Associated Press story that we expect to hit the wires this weekend. It is a great example of what we can accomplish when we come together around a consistent message.

Just to share a glimpse into the power and potential of thinking outside the box, last week, we had the opportunity to work with Randall Stephenson, Tico Perez, and Jack Furst to deliver the BSA?s first-ever, nationwide audiocast.  As many as 50,000Scouts, volunteers, parents, and professionals from every state and U.S. territory and from as far away as Afghanistan, Singapore, Yemen, and Europe came together to hear about the 100th Anniversary and to be inspired. We hope you had a chance to tune in, but if you didn?t, you can still catch it at www.audiocast.scouting.org.

Did it make a difference? Take a look at just a few of the hundreds of comments we received real-time through Facebook and Twitter:

  • Kenneth L. Reynolds. Enjoyed the kickoff! Can't wait to be a part of next year?s events locally and nationally.
  • John William Herndon. I am so glad for the BSA!! . . .I just made it to the Eagle Scout rank at the age of 18. I will always be a part of Scouting, until the day I die.
  • Sherif Shicco. Great presentation & video, good luck BSA in your fabulous 100 year anniversary from your friend and X BSA International Camp Staff from Cairo, Egypt.
  • Jim Belonger. Just the information I needed to hear to kick-start the next year/century in my part of the Scouting community!
  • Ralph Bustrum. This is my 75th year in Scouting in the Long Beach Area Council, Long Beach, Ca. 90808 and I am proud of being able to serve such a wonderful organization.
  • Zachary McCarty. Excellent audiocast! Can't wait for 2010 events and especially national jamboree!
  • Jennifer Tidmore. Wow?excellent audiocast. We are watching Adventure 100 right now?all I hear is ohhhh, awwww. Scouting rocks.
  • Marjorie Von Guerard Brooks. The audiocast was inspiring and the video was awesome! I am so glad that my 2 boys were part of this wonderful program. They both are Eagle Scouts. I have 4 grandsons, 1 is a Tiger Cub and the other 3 still have a few years to go but they too will become Scouts. I cannot wait!
  • Brian Marron. I loved Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts as a kid. Now I'm back as a den leader to some Bear Scouts. I am excited to be a part of this organization during its 100th year and to be able to help our youth of today!!
  • Matt Cole. Jack Furst was a great master of ceremonies at "The Summit" dedication on November 18! I was there with my District Chair and 2 of my Scouts! A great memory for what will be a huge part of Scouting in the future!

And, then there were the blog postings and other write-ups, including this excerpt and comment from the father of a Tenderfoot. This is what it?s all about.

Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary Celebration
December 11, 12:13 AM Stockton ExaminerChuck Douros

When an organization the size of the Boy Scouts of America sets out to celebrate its centennial anniversary, it's OK to expect big things. Wednesday night's nationwide audiocast kickoff rally did not disappoint.

The audiocast was hosted by AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson from their global headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Think of it as the 21st century virtual equivalent of campfire lore told by Robert Baden Powell in 1910; all in the spirit of spreading the good word of Scouting.

Coast-to-coast, every state in the nation participated in a fast-paced, informative, and lively discussion about the year-long 100 Years of Scoutingcelebrations planned all across America.Touted as the largest virtual gathering in BSA history and the first of its kind, it is estimated that a worldwide audience of tens of thousands tuned in.

"We want to show our worldwide audience that Scouting is still here and is as vital and rewarding as ever," said Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca, when asked to state the goal for the rally.

BSA National President John Gottschalk unveiled one of the goals of the audiocast. "With the growing presence of social media sites, we in Scouting are looking at the importance of the ?cool factor.? ?

This is our moment to shine.  We hope you will join us on this journey, and in the process, set the course for great things to come. Thanks for your friendship. Thanks for your support. And, thanks for all you do for Scouting. Happy holidays and best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Yours in Scouting, Bob Mazzuca

A Note From Your Megaversity Chairman

Hello everyone,
I hope your a having a happy Holiday season.  While you are at home, warm with your families and (scouts) I would like you to think about courses and ideas to make this year's Megaversity even better than the last.  We need instructors, midway vendors, set up and clean up help, registration help etc.  Our theme is "Megaversity 100-Continuing the Journey" and I am hoping that this year's "journey" is filled with innovation, education and awe-inspiring ideas to make Scouting 2010 the most fun ever.  We will be repeating many of the courses from last year so that those who missed out will have the opportunity to be enriched but we need more, more, more.   If anyone has ideas, would like to instruct, or can contact midway vendors and educators please contact me at the address below.  District Executives, please send this to your distribution lists and ask you leaders to sent to their unit lists so that we can cover as many people and generate as much excitement as we can.  Our Megaversity date is March 20, 2010 and will once again be held at the Auto Club Speedway thanks to the generosity of that organization.  We hope to see you all there.

Thank-you, Suzanne Cherry
