Welcome to our December 2nd, 2013 Monday Memo

Blasts from the past ... CIEC Scout Shop Award

ScoutStuff’s Cyber Monday sale is live — get 25% off most items, free shipping

Ahh, Cyber Monday. All the savings of Black Friday with none of the pushing and shoving.

www.ScoutStuff.org is joining the Cyber Monday party by offering 25 percent off a bunch of its items and free shipping on orders of $75 or above. In my experience, ScoutStuff offers its lowest prices each year on Cyber Monday, so now’s the time to stock up.

The discounts will be automatically applied at checkout, so you don’t need a promo code. But you do need to hurry. When the clock strikes midnight Central Time tonight, this deal turns into a pumpkin.

Another important note: the savings don’t apply to every item. Most jamboree items are included, but uniforms, program insignia, program literature, Pinewood Derby items, advancement items and gift cards are excluded from the deal.

Training Manager Enhancements Launched in MyScouting Tools

We’ve received wonderful reviews regarding the MyScouting Tools as well as great feedback from our volunteers. As a result, two enhancements have been made to the Training Manager tool:

  • Initially, the Trained Leaders Report and the YPT Aging Report were available only at the staff and unit levels. That functionality is now available at the district level for district Key 3 members to download.
  • Unit and district Key 3 members can now generate and view an “exception” report that lists only those members who are not position-trained, those whose YPT has expired, or those who have never taken YPT simply by clicking in the red areas on the Trained Leaders or YPT pie charts. This provides a quick and easy method of producing the information Key 3s need so that they can concentrate on helping these individuals get out of the red.

Exciting Note! For the month of September, unit and district Key 3 members accessed the Training Manager tool and generated more than 1,100 Trained Leaders reports and nearly 4,000 YPT Aging reports. Last month, those numbers grew to generating more than 10,000 Trained Leaders reports and nearly 7,500 YPT Aging reports. That’s fantastic!

Language of Scouting

Resources

This reference is the Boy Scouts of America’s definitive resource on terms and style specific to Scouting and this organization. The Language of Scouting encompasses style, usage, grammar, and spelling norms observed by the Boy Scouts of America and used by the Marketing Group and Communication Services Department at the national office. These standards have been developed so that the BSA can disseminate resources and other information in the most professional, consistent, coherent, and uniform manner for all forms of communication—printed, electronic, and so forth.

Scouting terms are based in part on the Charter and Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Boy Scouts of America. Grammar, spelling, style, and usage decisions are based on the latest editions of the following references, in order of preference: Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, The Associated Press Stylebook, and The Chicago Manual of Style. Turn to these references (in the given order) for further reference. However, the Language of Scouting always

Scouts Around the Globe Are Creating World Peace

Join In and Make a Difference

Fellow Scouters,

In 1920, just two years after the most terrible war the world had ever known, 8,000 Scouts from 34 countries came together for the first world jamboree. At the closing ceremony, Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell called on participants to carry the spirit of the jamboree home “so that we may help to develop peace and happiness in the world and goodwill among all Scouts.”

The Scouts of the world have been answering that call for more than 90 years.Today, Scouts in dozens of countries are working for peace by solving conflicts in their schools, building links between divided communities, teaching their peers about health and wellness, and repairing environmental damage. To recognize their efforts—and to inspire more young men and women to help Scouting create a better world—the World Scout Committee has launched the Messengers of Peace initiative. The Boy Scouts of America is proud to join this effort in 2012.

How can BSA units participate? All they have to do is go online and register the MOP-related community service projects (including Eagle Scout projects) they undertake. Doing so adds pins to a global Messengers of Peace map, which Scouts from around the world can click on to learn how their fellow Scouts are making a difference.

Scouts who complete MOP projects will be eligible for a special recognition: a ring patch that goes around the World Crest. That patch will symbolize their participation in an ever-widening circle of Scouts who are not just visualizing world peace but are helping to make it a reality.

The Scouts of the world have always been a powerful force for good. This initiative lets us celebrate what our Scouts have already accomplished and inspire them to accomplish even more. Please join us as we work together to create a better world.

Yours in Scouting, Peter E. Hyman, Chair BSA Messengers of Peace
James S. Turley, International Commissioner Boy Scouts of America

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------------

"All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom; justice; honor; duty; mercy; hope."

~  Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) British Politician

My Father, grant that I may not deceive myself and expect big results from little efforts; nor be willing to receive assistance and refuse my support. May I not only be anxious to give others all that I can, and share their burdens, but may I be glad to help make fewer burdens for others to bear.

Amen.
