Crew 301 Activity
Venturing Crew 301 spent Martin Luther King weekend at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Crews hiked through a narrow slot canyon for 1/2 mile just to get the start of the San Diego Orienteering Maze-O event on Saturday. Maze-O is a score orienteering race through a series of interlocking slot canyons. Sunday had more traditional point-to-point orienteering and a team from Crew 301 won the orange/group category.
Crew supports MLK day of service and spent Monday removing Sahara mustard in the Box Canyon area of the park. Sahara mustard is an invasive species that is displacing wildflowers in our deserts. Crew 301 attended a training session with the park biologist earlier this year to prepare for the service project. Crew 301 is one of the few units formally trained in Sahara mustard removal and is able to provide training to other units.

Caterpillar, Scouts Team Up
When the old barns on the Caterpillar site in Winston-Salem, North Carolina were torn down to make way for a manufacturing facility, Jonathan Ware was excited about the prospects of recycling the wood. But the material was in such poor shape that wood salvagers weren’t interested in re-using it. Undeterred, Jonathan continued to pursue the idea of recycling the wood. “We got all this material out there. We ought to be able to do something with it,” said Jonathan, a Gray project manager who is spearheading the landscaping effort on the Caterpillar project.
Jonathan contacted Boy Scout Troop 940 and asked if they would be interested in building some birdhouses as merit badge projects. The troop immediately accepted the project.
Jonathan took the salvaged wood to the scouts and provided them with minimal instructions: Use the wood to build a birdhouse for migratory songbirds. It was up to the scouts to research the various bird species, design the house and build the birdhouses. It took the troop about a month, but in the end they constructed four birdhouses.
As an added bonus, when the scouts delivered the birdhouses, they received a tour of the job trailer and a seminar on architecture, design and construction which allowed them to earn additional merit badges. In all, the Cub Scouts fulfilled the requirements for obtaining the bear and wolf ranks. The Boy Scouts fulfilled the requirements for two merit badges — fish and wildlife management and architecture.
“There’s also a really important community aspect of it,” Jonathan said. “The kids learn about the process of being involved in the community and a local business while learning how to build birdhouses. There’s a connection that starts to be created between the community and facility.”
The four birdhouses will be placed along ¾ of a mile of nature trails on the Caterpillar site. The nature trails will be surrounded by 30 acres of prairie grass that creates a good habitat for migratory songbirds. To accompany the birdhouses, Jonathan is leading an effort to build bird blinds for the nature trails. At this point, Jonathan isn’t sure if he will ask the scouts to help out or if Gray will take on the project. Either way, he
plans to build the bird blinds using recycled wood from the crates of the manufacturing equipment that will be installed in the facility.
“These are big pieces of equipment delivered in crates that aren’t your basic wooden crates,” Jonathan said. “They’re actually crafted and substantial due to the size of the equipment. We’re going to get some good
material out of that.”
With the success of the North Carolina project, Jonathan wants to replicate it in Kentucky. “I’m working with the local Boy Scouts of America Blue Grass Council here in Kentucky about the possibility of using what we did in North Carolina as a model with an eye to eventually roll this out on a national
level,” he said.
 | Boy's Life The Boys’ Life Mini-mag is a true miniature edition, a digest-sized version of Boys’ Life magazine. It contains reprinted columns and articles from recent Cub Scout editions, including Hitchin’ Rack, Cub Corner, Tiger Cubs, Scouts in Action, Think & Grin, the comics, and more. A great way to use these are at School Nights and recruiting meetings. Give each new recruit a minimag they can read until their first issue of Boys’ Life arrives. Contact your district's membership chair or district executive for more information. |
