                     Monday Memo

Welcome to our December 5th, 2011 Monday Memo

Order of the Arrow Vigil Ceremonies

Cahuilla Lodge conducted our first of two scheduled Vigil ceremonies to induct our twelve nominated Lodge Vigil Honor Members for 2011.

Seven of the Lodges twelve candidates arrived up at Emerson Friday evening in the cold prepared to experience their Vigil this past weekend, December 2-3, 2011. Lead by the Cahuilla Chief, Ian McLeod, and our Lodge First Vice Chief, John Garcia, Lodge Vigil candidates prepared to experience the highest honor bestowed by the Lodge, the Vigil Honor. Limited numbers of Arrowmen can be nominated by fellow Arrowman with nominations reviewed and selected by the Lodge Chief and his Lodge Executive Leadership. The Vigil is the highest honor beginning with Arrowman and Brotherhood Honor Member, and is the only membership position which the Arrowman must be nominated and selected by their peers in the Order of the Arrow. The Vigil Honor Member exemplifies best the principles of character and service to all.

As the sun rose on Saturday morning over a brisk and cold Camp Emerson, the Lodge inducted and welcomed seven of our 2011 Vigil candidates. We are proud of the Lodges newest Vigil Honor Members, and look forward to our second Vigil Honor Ceremony scheduled for January 6-7, 2012 at Camp Emerson when the Lodge and Chief will induct our final five candidates.

Vigil Honor Members inducted, Camp Emerson, December 3-4, 2011:

National Jamboree

Why Attend the National Jamboree
By Adam Purvis
Eagle Scout & 2010 Cahuilla Lodge Chief

With so many great outings put on by the BSA each year, it’s getting harder and harder to decide which ones to attend, and which events you might have to miss out on. Despite all the great programs our youth have to enjoy, there is one opportunity no Scout should pass up. The idea of going to a Jamboree can be somewhat intimidating at first. How many Scouts are going to be there? How far away is it? Will I have fun? And of course, how much is this going to cost?

Have you ever been to Disneyland on a busy day and seen thousands of people waiting in line to go on Space Mountain or meet Mickey? Well jamboree is kind of like that except the people are all Scouts and instead of riding rollercoaster’s and meeting Mickey Mouse they are riding mountain bikes, shooting guns, trading patches, earning merit badges and meeting some of the most influential people of today’s world.

I had the opportunity to attend the 2010 jamboree and I can tell you it was one of the highlights of my Scouting career. I too was a little nervous at first. Like I said 45,000 Scouts can be intimidating. However, I soon found myself having the time of my life and meeting people from all over the nation.

2010 was a landmark Jamboree for BSA and its going to be hard to top, but while working on Summit Corps staff this summer, I was able to get a look and what we can expect from the upcoming event. The new Summit will be like nothing Scouts have experienced before. Scouts are going to find themselves in some of the most beautiful country that this nation has to offer. Rock climbing, mountain biking and rafting will all take place at the new Summit property recently purchased by the BSA in West Virginia. Not to mention riding on all the trails built by the Scouts who attended Summit Corps this past summer. With so much to offer, the upcoming Jamboree will definitely be something to put on the calendar and start gearing up for. Attending the 2010 jamboree was one of the best times in my Scouting career, and I urge every Scout to attend the upcoming 2013 National Jamboree and also make history by being among the first Scouts to attend the new and beautiful Summit in West Virginia, you will not be disappointed.

Spreading the word about healthy lifestyles

The BSA has aligned with several organizations that share a goal to promote healthier lifestyles among young people. This week, a new initiative, Healthy Kids Out of School, was announced at the Building a Healthier Future Summit in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Partnership for a Healthier America.

This initiative is being driven by ChildObesity180, an organization that fosters collaboration among diverse leaders across the country to reverse the trend of childhood obesity within a generation. Other organizations include the BSA, Girl Scouts of the USA, the National Council of La Raza, the National Council of Youth Sports, the National Urban League, Pop Warner, US Youth Soccer, the YMCA, and 4-H.

The BSA joined leaders from these organizations to develop universal nutrition and physical activity principles from a broad list of recommendations, based on scientific evidence, for combating childhood obesity. This was a terrific collaborative effort.

We all agreed upon three sustainable, actionable principles that are flexible and can be adapted for different environments and cultures. They are:

- Drink Right. Choose water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages.
- Move More. Boost movement and physical activity in all programs.
- Snack Smart. Fuel up on fruits and vegetables.

This endeavor is a natural fit for us. Our SCOUTStrong program, launched earlier this year, is encouraging Scouts across the nation—as well as those not in Scouting—to adopt healthier lifestyles. By collaborating with Healthy Kids Out of School and other great initiatives, we can help that message resonate more broadly and with greater impact. That’s important for building our next generation of leaders.

I hope Scouts in your units are actively pursuing their SCOUTStrong Pala emblem and are sharing the principles of this initiative with others. Efforts such as SCOUTStrong and Healthy Kids Out of School are only as good as the people who strive to accomplish the programs’ goals and promote their virtues.

Let’s do all we can to kick unhealthy lifestyles to the curb and keep our young people strong and healthy.

Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive

Do You Know Someone Who Would Be an Outstanding Member of our Camp Staff?

The success of your Scout’s week at summer camp is many times determined by the quality of the staff serving you. If you have a Scout in your troop who will be 14 years old by May 1, 2012-- and who you believe would make a good staff member - encourage him to apply for staff. Explorers and Venturers (male and female) can also apply.

Camp staff provides a great opportunity for a young man or woman to broaden their Scouting contacts, improve their leadership skills and serve the thousands of Webelos, Scouts, Venturers and leaders who attend our camps each year.

Program staff (age 16 +) are paid based on their experience and camp assignment. Room and board is provided to each camp staff member. Additional information on salaries is provided during the interview process.

  • Program Staff: age 16
  • Area Directors (Outdoor Skills, Nature, and Archery): age 18
  • Area Directors (Program, Aquatics, and Shooting Sports): age 21

2012 US-Mexican International Camporee-Mataguay Scout Reservation

The planning for the 2012 International Camporee with Mexico is well underway. It is important that everyone with influence in the CIEC get the word out to Troops for this tremendous international scouting opportunity. Our own Bill Dull is involved in the planning.

Participation in an international event is a requirement for the CIEC International Activity badge. In addition, for anyone who might want to be part of a national contingent to a World Jamboree or serve on a World Jamboree staff this provides another entry to an 'international resume'. Click Here for Flyer

Please help get the word out to Troops throughout the CIEC.

Many thanks, Mike Goldware, International Representative

Latest National Eagle Scout Association Updates

The national NESA Committee is working with publisher Harris Connect again to publish another Eagle Scout stories book in 2012, which is the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award. The theme will be “Where are they now?” We would like to extend the opportunity to all Eagle Scouts to consider participating. At this point, we are seeking the names and contact information for all Eagle Scouts that councils know of, but NESA does not possess. So if you have a database of Eagle Scouts, please ask your registrar or another staff member to check the NESA Online Community and add any names that we do not have. Each council has the ability to review its records in the Online Community and make changes to them. Please review and use the attached manual.

Of major importance to councils is that Harris Connect is going to dig deeper, seeking to locate more Eagle Scouts and their contact information. The first nationwide Eagle Scout search done in 2008 led most councils to make contact with the adult Eagle Scouts living in their territory and reengage them as volunteers and donors. In fall 2012, councils will be notified that their database of Eagle Scouts living in their territory has been updated, and they will be given the URL, username, and password to access it.

Please see the attached image of the NESA wristwatch recently commissioned. Only 100 of these were made. They cost $100 each, which includes shipping, and are available by contacting Jeff Laughlin at jeff.laughlin@scouting.org. What a great way to say thanks to your council NESA chair or staff adviser for a job well done.

And speaking of a job well done, please post any successes you have had with your Eagle Scout gatherings, alumni events, or other Eagle Scout outreach projects on the Best Practices Portal, which is on MyScouting on Scouting.org. There is now a NESA category there. Click Here for Reference Manual

Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Kindest regards, Bill Steele | Director of the National Eagle Scout Association
