Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our December 7th Monday Memo

Let's say thanks to our Troops!

Xerox is doing something cool
If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do. We can never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

Our National (virtual) 100th Anniversary Audiocast Rally

Here's your chance to join our national 100th Anniversary leadership in jump-starting our centennial year, along with thousands of Scouts and Scouters from across the country!

On December 10, we will have our first national audiocast rally to get folks excited and energized as we head into 2010. I challenge everyone in Scouting to help make this audiocast event the largest virtual gathering in Scouting history. It is easy to participate. Just sign up and switch on through your own computer.

You'll have the chance to hear from Scouting's top leadership: AT&T Chairman, President, and CEO Randall Stephenson, our 100th Anniversary chairman; BSA President John Gottschalk; and BSA National Commissioner Tico Perez; and I'll be there, too!

We want to inspire the entire Scouting family to be part of the centennial celebration. If we do this right, the 100th Anniversary will be the greatest gift we can give to our next generation in Scouting ... because it will make our organization stronger for our next 100 years. Be part of that historic moment in our history.

Harness the enthusiasm from this audiocast and drive it throughout your council program. This is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone that everyone can be proud to share.

Make sure you and your community don't miss this unique opportunity. You can RSVP and submit questions at http://audiocast.scouting.org. This is also where you'll find the link to the audiocast rally on December 10.

Join us! Thursday, December 10, 2009
8?8:30 p.m. Eastern
7?7:30 p.m. Central
6?6:30 p.m. Mountain
5?5:30 p.m. Pacific

Thanks, Bob

Have you planned your Scouting adventure for 2011?

You may want to mark these dates July 27-August 7, 2011, on your calendar.

After you experience a national Scout jamboree, why not plan the World Scout jamboree for your next Scouting adventure!

In 2011 the World Scout Jamboree will be held in Rinkaby, Sweden. You must be age 14 ? 17 to participate as a youth member.  Starting at age 18 you may participate as an International Service Team member which is the world Scout jamboree staff.

Why not ask members of your troop or venturing crew to consider applying to participate as a youth member.  Just forward this email to them with your recommendation!  Youth participants must be age 14-17 years old.

If you are interested go BSA's World Jamboree website at:  www.scouting.org/worldjamboree. Click Here for Brochure

Research Panels Help Scouting Innovate

Our strength lies in our ability to adapt to contemporary needs while remaining true to timeless values. Today's Scouts earn different awards and wear different uniforms than their predecessors, but they share the same Scout Oath and Scout Law.

To ensure that Scouting remains relevant, the Innovation and Research teams regularly survey youth members, adult volunteers, and Cub Scout parents. These three research panels offer those on the front lines of Scouting the chance to weigh in on merit badges and belt loops, program delivery, and more.

Although the panels are only about a year old, they've already led to the approval of several new merit badges and the development of pilot programs including the use of personal watercraft and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). (These activities are currently restricted.)

To help ensure that a variety of voices from across the country is heard, please encourage your council's youth members, volunteers, and Cub Scout parents to sign up for the panels by going to Scouting.org/bsasurveycenter and entering the following passwords:

  • Youth members?enter the password youthpanel (no caps and no space).
  • Cub Scout parents?enter the password cubparent (no caps and no space).
  • Registered adult volunteers?enter the password volunteer (no caps).

Participants will be asked to enter their membership ID number. Cub Scout parents should enter their sons' membership ID numbers.

We appreciate your help as we strive to present the best programs possible for today's youth. For more information, contact Research.team@scouting.org

New Belt Loops, Pins, and Merit Badges are Coming

When the BSA was founded in 1910, boys weren't into video games, scuba diving, or robotics. But as we enter our second century, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be able to earn awards in these topics, thanks to a new focus on change and innovation.

New for Cub Scouts

Video Games is one of 13 new belt loops and pins in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. It's been more than 10 years since the program expanded, so volunteers and Cub Scouts from around the country have been waiting for this change.

In late January, Scout shops across the country should begin selling a new edition of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide (No. 34299), which will include these additions:

Academics Subjects:

  • Disabilities Awareness
  • Family Travel
  • Good Manners
  • Nutrition
  • Pet Care
  • Photography
  • Reading and Writing
  • Video Games
  • Requirements for the new awards will mirror those for the existing belt loops and pins. Besides the addition of the new awards, the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program remains the same.

    Sports:

  • Hiking
  • Hockey
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kickball
  • Skateboarding

    Combined Federal Campaign

The Combined Federal Campaign is currently underway for employees that work for the Federal Government. Workplace donations and designated giving are a great way to contribute to our council.  Your gifts help us to provide quality programs and services to the youth of our Inland Empire.  Please keep us in mind as you are selecting agencies for your charitable giving.  The federal campaign agency code for the California Inland Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America is   29545.  Thank you for all that you do to serve our scouts!
