Welcome to our December 9th, 2013 Monday Memo 2013 Peace Light Ceremony Saturday, December 14th at 3:00pm For over a thousand years lamps have been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem Israel. For the last 22 years, a child from Upper Austria has lit two blast proof miner’s lamps from a grotto lamp. The blast proof miners lamps are then carried on an Austrian Airlines jet from Tel Aviv Israel to Vienna Austria from where the Peace Light is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries. Since 2004, Austrian Airlines has flown the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light from Vienna to New York City. Scout Leaders light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the United States and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is your opportunity to take the Peace Light home with you. Bring an oil lamp or enclosed candle to Camp Emerson and we will share the Peace Light with you so you may share it with your friends, family, church and other organizations. You can even light your home pilot lights with it so that you may have the “flame of peace” burning in your home all year long! More information available at www.peacelight.org Cub Scouting Gingerbread Boy Evenings at Ontario Bakery Once again, Ontario Bakery opened their shop to Cub Scouts this holiday season. On the evenings of December 3 & 5, over 100 Cub Scouts participated in the creation and decoration, however they wanted to, of their very own gingerbread boy! The visit also included a tour of the bakery kitchen area and equipment. All Cub Scouts attending represented their packs well and did amazing jobs as gingerbread boy decorators. Thank you Old Baldy district commissioner Kathy "K-Fab" Fabos & Chris Fabos, and Eagle Scout Matt Fabos for offering this experience! Troop 652 Rocks! Troop 652 of Rancho Cucamonga in the Old Baldy District ended the year right with their High Adventure Rock Climbing campout in Joshua Tree in November. The last time our Troop went climbing was back in 2007 and the boys had a blast, so we decided to try it again. This time we had 23 Scouts and 8 adults participate. Every single boy tried climbing and most adults tried climbing, with some of both conquering their fear of heights while climbing or rappelling! The weather was perfect for a day of climbing! We also had some great food, as always. The evening was nice and the moon was the brightest we have ever seen it in Joshua Tree, so bright that it almost looked like daylight! If you have never been Rock Climbing on REAL rocks (not the indoor climbing gym), I highly suggest that your Troop try it out. You must book the BSA on Belay Team way in advance to follow the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting Guidelines. Used for centuries to represent a personal observance and watchfulness with emphasis on a personal spiritual purpose, 12 Cahuilla Lodge Vigil Candidates, under the guidance of personal sponsors and witnessed by existing Lodge Vigil Honor Members, took to our Camp Emerson late Friday evening to seal their Vigil Honor. With a light snow on the ground and one of the coldest nights this season, the Lodges Vigil Candidates took to their personal Vigil and reflected upon what others have observed in their consistent devotion to the Order of the Arrow, the principles of the Scouting program and how they have put such into practice in their daily lives. The Vigil Honor is the highest O.A. honor to be bestowed upon an Arrowman and the only honor by which the O.A. member cannot self determine, rather they are selected by their peers for exemplifying the qualities of brotherhood and commitment to service. The Cahuilla Lodge is proud to share their 12 newest Vigil Honor Members from across our Lodge Chapters in the CIEC. Please help us welcome our new Vigil Honor Members: Andrew Davis-Wanakik Chapter Beverly Gruendner-Tahquitz Chapter Cameron Clossick-Tahquitz Chapter Carl Vicnaire-Tahquitz Chapter | Destin Patterson-A-tsa Chapter Eddie Kolb-Wanakik Chapter Jared Brandt-Tahquitz Chapter John Mills, Jr.-Serrano Chapter | Jonathan Stanley-A-tsa Chapter Dr. Michael Sanford-Aca Chapter Sharon Thomas-A-tsa Chapter Trenton Goopio-Wanakik Chapter | Monday Memo Day Camp Patch Design Design the winning patch and you can go to Day Camp for free in summer 2014. Two Eagle Scouts in the NFL Grab Wins in Their Returns to Action | Eagle Scout Austin Collie started his career with the Indianapolis Colts and now plays for the New England Patriots. Everyone’s talking about yesterday’s snow-covered NFL games today, but here’s a story to make Scouts and Scouters smile — regardless of how their favorite team fared. Two Eagle Scouts returned to NFL action yesterday, each in a winning effort. It must be especially satisfying for tight end Dennis Pitta and wide receiver Austin Collie after a frustrating 2013 season for each of the 28-year-olds. Pitta, sidelined for the first 13 weeks of the season after dislocating his hip in the preseason, had six catches for 48 yards and one touchdown for the Baltimore Ravens in their win over the Minnesota Vikings. Ravens fans last saw Pitta back in February when he had a touchdown catch in the team’s Super Bowl XLVII win. Ten months after that big win, he’s got another. Collie, also a Super Bowl veteran (his Indianapolis Colts lost in Super Bowl XLIV in 2010), has been in and out of the NFL after being released last month. The New England Patriots re-signed Collie last week, and the Eagle Scout had one catch for four yards in the team’s comeback win against the Cleveland Browns. Both Eagle Scouts attended Brigham Young University after achieving Scouting’s highest honor. Now that they’re in the NFL, they’re proving that a successful Scouting career can coexist with a successful sporting career. | Religious Emblem Board of Review The Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of San Bernardino will be holding their annual religious emblem board of reviews on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Jack Dembo Scout Center in Redlands, CA. The boards will be conducted between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm. Any young man or woman working on their Boy Scout or Venturing level religious emblems who need a board of review must email the committee chair, Mary Kleinvachter, at scouting@sbdiocese.org to schedule their appointment time. Please note that a board of review is required for those who have been working on and completed all requirements for the Ad Altare Dei or the Pope Pius XII religious emblems.
