Scout Workshops

Scouts Day: December 6, 2014

Thank you for your interest in attending Scouts Day at AMOCA!

Your scouts can earn a badge at AMOCA’s Scouts Day.  Docents will take your group on a tour of the museum’s current exhibitions and ceramic studio.  The will learn how clay is made, stored and recycled.  They will also learn how wedging improves the clay, how artwork is stored during the creative process and how the artwork is fired.

Scouts will discover different firing methods available at AMOCA. Scouts will see the insides of the kilns, learn how kilns work, and see one in action! Scouts can also learn what glazes are made from and discuss major glazing techniques such as dipping, pouring, spraying, painting and sponging.

Scouts will enjoy getting dirty in the AMOCA Ceramics Studio. We offer the opportunity to work in clay. Your scout will be able to create their very own hand-built pot or sculpture based on their troop level.

At the end of the workshop, the scouts will have their worksheets completed and be able to receive their merit badge. If your troop or organization has specific merit badge requirements beyond those covered here, our staff will work with you to create a workshop that meet the additional requirements. More Info.....

The event fee is $20 per person and includes:

Day 1 – Three Hours (December 6, 2014)

  • Museum admission with a field guide and docent led tour
  • Collection Manager Talk about historical pottery. Scouts will get a chance to see pottery up close.
  • A chance to make a hand-built pot or a sculpture
  • Artist demonstration on the wheel
  • 2 chaperones are free per scout troop.

Day 2 – One Hour  (January 17, 2015), additional time required for drying and firing

Boy Scout Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Workshop

The American Philatelic Society, the largest stamp collecting organization in the world, will be holding its Winter Show – AmeriStamp Expo - at the Riverside Convention Center, Riverside, California, from February 13-15, 2015. Please visit our website at http://stamps.org/AmeriStamp-Expo-ASE

I am a Merit Badge counselor with the Juniata Valley Council, located in Reedsville, PA. On Saturday, February 14, I will be offering a Stamp Collecting Merit Badge workshop at AmeriStamp Expo.

What is the best way to get this information to the Scouts in your District? May I send you copies of the attached registration form and flyer to be distributed within your District? In the past, we have had very few boys attend the SCMB workshop at our Riverside shows. However, I am hoping to improve on those numbers in 2015.

Scouts may reserve a spot in the workshop by completing the function ticket form located on the APS website: http://stamps.org/ASE-Function-Tickets

Youth Leaders get Trained in Mt. Rubidoux

Mt. Rubidoux District  minted 35 new youth leaders at Cedar Badge – Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops.  The weekend training event, held Oct. 10-11 at an LDS facility in Riverside,  also attracted Scouts from around the council. Enthusiasm was high all weekend as the boys enjoyed pure Scouting.

Cedar Badge covered Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and  the Patrol Leader Handbook. Through games and fun, hands-on training sessions, Scouts learned more about leadership such as planning and conducting  troop and patrol meetings, campfires, religious observances and song leading. Scouts come away with a better understanding of their leadership roles and ideas to put some spark in their troop program. Scouts, who formed patrols and created flags and yells, also learned the value of teamwork and the patrol method.

Cedar Badge has been part of Mt. Rubidoux’s training commitment to Scouts for more than three decades. The program, which was developed by the district leadership, assists Scoutmasters in the training of their youth leaders.

Eagle Scout helps others cope with the loss of a pet by building a place to ‘calm down’

Stone Price remembers when his dog, Sandy, had cancer and had to be put to sleep at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley.

“I just wanted time to go over memories of my dog,” Stone said, “and there was no place to go.”

Just 11 years old at the time, Stone decided that building a bench for the humane society, where people could “calm down” after the loss of a pet would be a good idea.

Especially if it were his Eagle Scout project.

That was about 18 months ago.

So his project, completed in June, is a wooden memorial bench resting on a concrete slab in a shaded spot — a place to “calm down.”

When he was still 12 years old, Stone earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the youngest recipient of the honor in the Arrowhead District, California Inland Empire Council. Read More.....

Firebirds Race for Excellence in Sports, Life

Stockton Smith of Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage brothers Sam Kocen and David Kocen never had to decide if they wanted to be a Firebird or an Eagle.

The three Palm Valley School students proved they can have an allegiance to both and can excel on either end.

The trio comprises half of the defending Majestic League champion Palm Valley cross country team, and all have garnered Eagle Scout status, the highest and most prestigious scouting rank for boys under 18.

The other half of the team is also well underway to balancing school, sports and scouts, a rare feat according to their coach Bonnie Smith.

Sophomore Nick Kaufmann has completed his Eagle Scout project and is awaiting final paperwork to obtain his rank. Sophomore Zach Jenkins is about to begin his project, while senior Sam Barton also has been part of the scouts since elementary school. Read More......

Registration Age Requirements

As you know, the National Executive Board approved a resolution earlier this year to establish consistency in the registration requirements across all programs, regardless of participant age. The purpose of this resolution is to ensure that moving forward, participants who are 18 but not yet 21 register as adults. However, this does not affect their eligibility to participate in programs such as Venturing and Sea Scouting.

The primary purpose of the change is to ensure that all persons legally considered adults meet adult membership requirements, including undergoing a criminal background check and meeting the BSA’s Youth Protection requirements and membership standards. The changes are required to allow the performance of criminal background checks in connection with the registration process. The board directed the BSA to implement the change when the required changes to systems and forms were ready. Therefore, the change will be implemented effective March 1, 2015. Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------------

"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow."

    ~  Helen Keller

I thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(I who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth
day of life and love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any-lifted from the no
of all nothing-human merely being
doubt unimaginably You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
