Scouts Day: December 6, 2014

Thank you for your interest in attending Scouts Day at AMOCA!

Your scouts can earn a badge at AMOCA’s Scouts Day.  Docents will take your group on a tour of the museum’s current exhibitions and ceramic studio.  The will learn how clay is made, stored and recycled.  They will also learn how wedging improves the clay, how artwork is stored during the creative process and how the artwork is fired.

Scouts will discover different firing methods available at AMOCA. Scouts will see the insides of the kilns, learn how kilns work, and see one in action! Scouts can also learn what glazes are made from and discuss major glazing techniques such as dipping, pouring, spraying, painting and sponging.

Scouts will enjoy getting dirty in the AMOCA Ceramics Studio. We offer the opportunity to work in clay. Your scout will be able to create their very own hand-built pot or sculpture based on their troop level.

At the end of the workshop, the scouts will have their worksheets completed and be able to receive their merit badge. Boy Scout Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Workshop

The American Philatelic Society, the largest stamp collecting organization in the world, will be holding its Winter Show – AmeriStamp Expo - at the Riverside Convention Center, Riverside, California, from February 13-15, 2015. Please visit our website at http://stamps.org/AmeriStamp-Expo-ASE

I am a Merit Badge counselor with the Juniata Valley Council, located in Reedsville, PA. On Saturday, February 14, I will be offering a Stamp Collecting Merit Badge workshop at AmeriStamp Expo.

What is the best way to get this information to the Scouts in your District? May I send you copies of the attached registration form and flyer to be distributed within your District? In the past, we have had very few boys attend the SCMB workshop at our Riverside shows. However, I am hoping to improve on those numbers in 2015.

Scouts may reserve a spot in the workshop by completing the function ticket form located on the APS website: http://stamps.org/ASE-Function-Tickets

Mt. Rubidoux Scout House Painting

The Scout house in Riverside has been used by many different scouting groups over the years including Troops, Crews, Foxfire, Outdoor Ethics, Leave no Trace and the Order of the Arrow and was starting to show some signs of aging. The First United Methodist Church which allows us to use the building decided that it was time for a fresh coat of paint. The call was put out and Scouts and Scouters from all around came out and over the course of two weekends the Scout house was made to look new again. Many thanks go out to all those who came out to help prep and paint the building. Special thanks to Michael McVeigh who was the coordinator for of our efforts.

Michael Hare, Wanakik Chapter Adviser

Twins Earn Eagle Scout Rank

As identical twins, brothers Jordan and Joshua Villegas have shared a lot of similar experiences during their 18 years. Being conferred with the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank was something that allowed each to shine for his own merit.

Joshua, who is older by one minute, chose to complete the second part of a multiple-step landscaping overhaul at the Kimberly Crest Mansion in Redlands. The first part of the task had been done by a fellow Troop 322 member for his Eagle Scout project last year.

“I agreed to finish it to make the yard a better place for visitors to look at,” he said.

Jordan organized the renovation of the “hobo camp” exhibit at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris. Boy Scouts also use the site for camping, and Jordan commanded a crew of volunteers who improved the campsites.

“We renovated the whole camp but added to the exhibit to make it like a hobo really lived there,” Jordan said. Read More.....

Joshua Villegas, left, and his twin brother, Jordan, recently earned their Eagle Scout rank and badges such as the one shown on the rear of Beaumont Troop 322?s ?Scoutmobile.?

Grayback District Boy Scouts collect 7,100 pounds of food donations in Redlands

From left, Timmy Cavarno, Alex Jenne, Brett Crowley and Trevor Matthews, members of Boy Scout Troop 44 of Redlands, were among the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of the Grayback District who participated in the district’s Scouting for Food collection on Oct. 11.

In the photo they are at Gerrards Market in Redlands with their collection barrel. Scouts collected 15,000 pounds of food donations outside grocery stores in Redlands, Highland, Yucaipa, Banning and Beaumont.

Of that amount, 7,100 pounds of food was collected in Redlands and distributed to the Salvation Army and Family Service Association of Redlands.
