OA Navajo Chapter Arrow of Light Ceremony Day in Old Baldy District

Saturday, February 1, was the annual Arrow of Light Ceremony day in Old Baldy District hosted by Navajo Chapter of the Order of the Arrow Cahuilla Lodge. A weather perfect day at Ralph M. Lewis Park, Rancho Cucamonga helped make the ceremony performances by the youth arrowmen of the chapter memorable. Cub Packs with desire to have an enhanced interactive themed Arrow of Light Ceremony arrived at their preset time with familes and Pack leadership. Congratulations to the Webelos Arrow of Light recipients of Pack 621, Pack 601, Pack 641, Pack 680 Pack 642, Pack 658, and Pack 522. A special thank you to all youth and adult arrowmen of the OA Navajo Chapter for hosting!

Time running out to earn Computers MB as Digital Technology MB launch nears

Jonathan Ive, who designed the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, was born the same year the BSA introduced Computers merit badge.

That should give you some idea just how old Computers merit badge is and just how much has changed in the world of technology since then. Thanks in part to Ive, computers have shrunk from the size of copy machines to the size of a deck of cards. Inputting commands has evolved from complex keystrokes to simple taps on a screen.

That evolution is why the BSA is replacing the outdated Computers merit badge with a newer model: Digital Technology merit badge, debuting in March 2014.

I’ll have requirements for Digital Technology MB soon, but first some details about the discontinuation of Computers, presented in bullet-point form and typed using a standard keyboard:

  • Computers merit badge will be discontinued as of Dec. 31, 2014, and replaced by Digital Technology merit badge, which debuts in March 2014.
  • The 2014 Boy Scout Requirements book, available soon, won’t have Computers merit badge requirements in it but will have the requirements for Digital Technology.
  • Scouts have until Dec. 31, 2014, to begin work on Computers merit badge.
  • If by Dec. 31, 2014, a Scout has begun actual and purposeful effort on Computers merit badge, and that effort is more than simply incidental to participation in Scouting activities, then there’s no time limit to completing the badge, except for his 18th birthday. See topic 7.0.4.4 in the Guide to Advancement for the full text of the policy on discontinued merit badges.
  • A Scout may not begin work on Computers merit badge after Dec. 31, 2014.
  • A Scout may earn and wear on his merit badge sash both Computers and Digital Technology merit badges.
  • The Computers merit badge pamphlet and patch won’t be reprinted or remade — when the inventory is gone, they’re gone.

Same thing with the merit badge itself. When 2014 ends, a Scout’s chance to earn this merit badge will go the way of the dot-matrix printer. But the good news is Digital Technology MB will be an even better model, with features every Scout will love.

Varstiy Snow Campout @ East Flats by Big Bear

Nine Varsity units showed up for some snow fun up at the East Flats area by Big Bear last friday night. 5 units showed up from Temecula and 4 others from the Riverside and Jurupa areas.

We had fun playing, sledding, eating and sleeping in the snow. Several groups made and slept in snow igloos that they made.

Hope to see more teams next year when we will do it again. Target date for next year will be 2/21-22/14.

February 1-15 is this year's fundraising campaign for BSA's World Friendship Fund, providing two weeks for our members to focus on these critical efforts throughout the world. It's a great opportunity for both leaders and youth to help fellow Scouts who are in need of their support.

Around the world, WFF donations have supported:

  • Building and rehabilitation of Scout camps
  • Earthquake and tsunami relief
  • Funding for sanitation and transportation needs
  • Ecological, handbook, and uniform projects
  • And so much more

For more information and details on how to donate, please visit your local national Scout Shop or scouting.org

Cub Scout Pack 24 hosts annual Pinewood Derby in Redlands

REDLANDS >> High-five slaps and cheers were heard Saturday in First Baptist Church of Redlands as Cub Scout Pack 24 held its annual Pinewood Derby.

Close to 50 youngsters participated in the race for a chance to earn prizes and bragging rights.

Joining Pack 24 for the first time were members of Girl Scout Troop 628 raced their derby cars under their own Powder Puff Derby.

Girl Scout troop dad Travis Mason said the group joined Pack 24 to get a feel for the event and are looking at holding their own race next year. Read More.....

Postive Quote & Prayer
------------------------------------

"I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws will be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings … If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."

~  Henry David Thoreau, telling us to pursue our dreams this year–to build “castles in the air”–as long as we put a foundation under them.

Oh, Great Spirit

Prayer composed by Chief Yellow Lark, a Blackfoot Indian--

Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. I come before you, one of your many children. I am weak and small. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset; my ears sharp so I may hear your voice. Make me wise, so I may learn the things you have taught my people, the lessons you have hidden under every rock and leaf. I seek strength, not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy--myself.

Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so whenever life fades, like the fading sunset, my spirit will come to you without shame.
