Silver Beaver Recipients Favorite Scouting Stories

Jim Marmor

I don’t have an isolated story that sticks out, I enjoy everything scouting. Scouting to me is for the boys, you have to have the adults but to see the boys that went through our troop grow into men is the most gratifying, memorable thing of scouting.

I am proud of the 25 young men who achieved the eagle rank while I was Scoutmaster. There’s nothing more gratifying then when the young men who are now fathers come to visit me with their sons and introduce me to them and reminisce about the positive experiences they had with me and Scouting.

John Vineyard

My favorite stories about working with Scouts generally involve the same basic story – a Scout discovering something he didn’t know he could do or discovering something that he didn’t know he would enjoy.

I particularly enjoy hiking mountains – or at least being at the top of mountains.  I get great satisfaction seeing the look on a Scout’s face the first time he sees the view from the summit of a 10,000 ft mountain and experiences the sense of satisfaction when he realizes that he made it to the top.

A-tsa Service Project

Recently the Lodge Chief Ian Hare, challenged each of the Chapters to host a service project and invite the other chapters to attend. A-tsa was the first to answer this challenge with a project this last weekend.

The San Timoteo Nature Sanctuary in Redlands was the site of the project on Saturday and was well attended.  The project consisted of clearing out weeds that had overgrown the amphitheater and the trail of the Nature Sanctuary. This beautiful place was the site of an Eagle Project of one of our own Arrowman, Johnathan Stanley, which involved making the amphitheater and trail.

Thank you for all the help and support we had out there. We couldn’t of done it without everyones help.

Best Regards, Destin Patterson, A-tsa chapter member

Program Change Update - Venturing

In a continual quest to keep the advisors and committees of the California Inland Empire Council’s Venturing Community abreast of the latest changes to the Venturing program, I would like to share the following information with you.

What’s NOT changing with the Venturing program – Age of membership; Ranger, Trust, and Quest Awards; and Officer/Advisor relationship.

What IS changing with the Venturing program – Venturing Oath and Code will be replaced by the Boy Scout Oath and Law; NEW core Venturing program and recognition; NEW resources will be made available including Youth handbook (core), Ranger/Trust/Quest combined, and adult leader handbook; enhanced youth training; and split advisor vs. committee training.

According to the National Venturing Youth Cabinet, new materials relating to the Venturing program changes including award requirements will be released starting May 2014, with a phase-in period for youth who are currently working to complete Venturing awards under the current requirements.  The awards transition plan is as follows,
If a Venturer is currently working on awards, they

  • May continue working on the current awards until December 31, 2014;
  • May convert to new awards after May 2014, beginning with Discovery Award; and
  • Must utilize the new awards requirements after December 31, 2014.

New Venturing Awards,

  • A Venturer may convert to the new awards after May 2014, beginning with the Discovery Award for current Venturers and beginning with the Venturing Award for new Venturers; and
  • ALL Venturers must utilize the new awards requirements after December 31, 2014.

The NEW Venturing Awards Names are (1) Venturing Award; (2) Discovery Award; (3) Pathfinder Award; and (4) Summit Award. (I have attached a copy of the announcement regarding the NEW Venturing Award Names for your convenience.)

I have also attached a copy of the Frequently Asked Questions document pertaining to the changes to the Venturing program as well as a copy of the 2014-2016 Program Change Overview for your convenience.

I want to thank you for your continued support of the Venturing program in the California Inland Empire Council.  If you have any questions regarding the changes to the Venturing program, be sure to join us at our next CIEC Venturing Committee Meeting, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on April 22, 2014 at the Jack Dembo Scout Service Center in Redlands.  Be sure to encourage your Youth president to join our Council Venturing president at the next CIEC Venturing Officers’ Association Meeting, which is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on April 22, 2014 at the Jack Dembo Scout Service Center in Redlands.

Wood Badge 2014

Greetings from the C.I.EC. Spring Wood Badge Staff! You may have noticed in the March Scouting Magazine (pages 30-33) a fantastic article on the benefits and value of attending a Wood Badge course. This scouting leadership training course is taught the world over and is generally considered the premium leadership training for scouting leaders from cubs through Venturing. The materials and sources for these courses are taught in the business community and are seen as critical elements for successful team-building, conflict management, as well as communication and project planning & implementation. The list goes on! You would be hard-pressed to find another place or training in any industry, business, or social setting that does a better job at building and refining the skills necessary to lead individuals to success in all areas of their personal and business lives. The article talks about the benefits of the training as well as some of the truly enjoyable and life-long relationship building opportunities that come with the completion of a wood badge course. Now you may be wondering what one has to do to become a participant in a wood badge course? I am so glad you asked! It just so happens that there are two courses that will take place this year within our council! They will be held at Camp Emerson just outside of Idyllwild in the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains. The CIEC website has applications available for either course. They are quick and easy to download and fill out. Fifty dollars holds your spot but I must warn you that the spring course to be held in May is filling quickly so you need to act fast. I am including the email addresses for myself and our course director Norris. Feel free to contact either one of us with any questions about the course and what is needed to join us. The council website also has the contact information for the fall course as well. Well, I think I will close for now with the sincere hope that you will come up the hill with us and see why so many people consider the Wood Badge experience the pivotal turning point in their adventure in scouting and leadership.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
