Welcome to our April 7th, 2014 Monday Memo

Boseker Scout Reservation Home of Camp Emerson, Camp Brown and Camp Wiley

Hello Scouters,

Your properties committee spent last Saturday at Boseker Scout Reservation home of Camp of Emerson, Camp Brown and Camp Wiley, reviewing short term fixes and long term fixes that are needed in camp, some legally required and more for the future of your reservation. For those of you that have never seen the upper portion of our camp, Camp Brown, take a couple hours and see what a beautiful camp it is; we don’t really use It, why not we asked. There is so much potential with the land we have and with your help we can make this the premier camp in the West.

To get started I am sure you are aware that on April 26, 2014 we need many, many folks to come up to camp and lend a hand preparing for this summer, making the camp more presentable to all when arriving, preparing for the large corrections that are needed, like the traffic bridge. The photo is the start of the “Fort” to be used by Cub Scouts, lots of work to complete it, but have you ever seen it, I had not what a revelation it was to see upper portion of our reservation and what potential there is up above.

Our Ranger Nancy can only do so much and she had done a great deal, but we need to be beside her, fixing, building and creating the premier camp. Are you a licensed plumber, electrician, contractor, etc. I want your email so we have the resources to make it all better. Training taught me “Know in and using your resources”. We are going to need many talents to get the camp the way you want it. See you April 26, 2014 if not before

New Videos Showcase Faith in Scouting

http://scout-wire.org/2014/04/04/new-videos-showcase-faith-in-scouting/

Two new videos have been added to the Marketing Toolbox to showcase the role faith plays in Scouting. Separate versions for the Baptist and Catholic faiths are available now on Scouting.org.

These videos can be used in “Together We Plan luncheons,” a broad-based appeal to churches of the same denomination to consider Scouting as a program for their youth and a way to attract new families to their congregation. You can also use them with volunteers and potential donors to highlight community support of Scouting or to inform parents of the positive influence of Scouting in their children’s lives.

In addition to the two versions available now, a Methodist version is currently in production, and additional versions are planned for future release.

Robotics Badge

CS2N, or Computer Science Student Network, has partnered with the BSA to offer free training and resources specifically for Scouts earning the Robotics merit badge. Scouts can download a 60-day copy of the Robot Virtual World Software to complete the Robotics merit badge.

In addition, there is a CS2N course specifically designed for Scouts and leaders to help boys earn the badge. For access to all the training material and software, visit http://www.cs2n.org/partners/boy-scouts/.

There you’ll find a variety of tools and resources for our Scouting community, including:

  • Teacher resources for Scout leaders
  • How-to videos
  • Fun, interactive games and activities
  • Learning opportunities

CS2N resources are also designed to support the upcoming Computer Science Programming merit badge. Starting in October, you’ll be able to use the CS2N infrastructure to develop your own themed storytelling and animation or Web development activities.

CS2N also supports our merit badge counselors by offering classes on an as-needed basis using WebEx distance learning technology. If you are interested in participating in a class, please send them a note.

Videography tips from Scouting’s Black-and-White Film Era

In the age of Smartphones and GoPros, the concept of documenting Scouting adventures in video format isn’t a novel idea. But in the 1930s, capturing troop meetings and outdoor activities posed a bit more challenge. (Think heavy 16-millimeter-film cameras using portable projectors and screens to show footage.)

Yet, even with these technical hurdles, Scouters and Scouts of the era realized that showing Scouting on film was not only a way document activities, but also a way to help recruit more boys to the movement.

In the April 1930 issue of Scouting — viewed in the Scouting magazine digital archives — the column “Motion Pictures in Scout Work,” by Allan A. Carpenter, examines the value of capturing Scouting on film. The article also points out some timeless cinematography tips that GoPro-wearing Scouts can use today to help make excellent videos.

In the days of the 1930s Scout, recording film meant lugging around a heavy (and bulky) camera equipped with 16-millimeter film. To playback the footage, Scouts would use a portable projector and, oftentimes, a “screen” created by a white sheet. According to the Scouting article, “these cameras can be easily carried and easily operated.”

Run out of film? Too bad. No extra memory card could help you in a pinch. And sound? Forget about it. “Talking films” were just hitting the big screens in Hollywood at the beginning of the decade. (Cost-wise, the film cost $.06 per foot. A camera cost about $250 and a portable projector would set you back about $275.)

Yet these black-and-white, blurry, bumpy films became a hit among troops looking to have “records showing the history of the activities of the Troop or Patrol of boys.” This could be “done better with the motion picture.”

Some of the tips for recording excellent Scouting films still stand true today, including:

  • Use a plot or story to help hold viewers’ interest, keeping them engaged from start to finish.
  • “If a picture has no other feature than entertainment, then it should be clever.”
  • Use these films to help show the development of an activity. Bring the activity to life for viewers.
  • Show these films at meetings, recruitment activities and in the community not only to draw interest to your pack, troop or crew, but to show others what Scouting is all about.

Does your pack, troop or crew record Scouting activities on video? Do you keep a YouTube channel for your unit? Share your video-filming tips in the comments.
Plus, take a look at last year’s Golden Eagle Awards to watch five stellar YouTube videos documenting Eagle Scout projects across the nation. You’ll also find even more video tips and suggestions.
