Welcome to our May 12th, 2014 Monday Memo | | April Showers Bring May Flowers Troop 652 of Old Baldy District went camping the weekend of April 25th-27th to Yucaipa Regional Park. There were 36 Scouts and 9 Adults on this Adventure! For most of the Cobra Patrol, it was their first campout, as our "Bike N Camp" to Lake Perris in February got cancelled due to the rain. We knew there was rain in the forecast, but we did not want to cancel because everyone was looking forward to camping and Rank Advancement. We are Boy Scouts and we are "Prepared"! It started raining at 10:30 p.m. Friday night, and it POURED all night, well into the wee hours of the morning. We woke up to about six inches of water under our tents (Adults only). It cleared up and was cloudy, but the sun kept peeking out and Saturday was a beautiful day! There were no complaints and the Scouts had a great time and got a lot of Rank Advancement done! The new Cobra Patrol earned their "Totin Chip" and their "Firem' n Chit" cards. They also did very well with their cooking and cleaning. The Pine Tree Patrol won the "Golden Spoon" award for breakfast. The Hawks and the Scorpions did an excellent job as well. The Trail Mix Patrol were helping with the younger Patrols. The Dutch Oven Desserts were awesome, as usual. It turned out to be a very sucessful campout! I think the Scouts and Scouters will always remember this camp out.... Christy Eimen Asst. Scoutmaster/Camping Chair Boseker Scout Reservation Trading Post Boseker Scout Reservation Updates: Since the old refrigerator ran out of gas and was removed from the trading post, refrigeration space has been very limited. The small refrigerator presently in the trading post is not adequate for storage of all the products. The acquisition of a commercial display refrigerator will provide several advantages. The glass doors allow customers to see what is inside without opening the door, not constantly opening and standing with the door open will save energy and allow for more cooling efficiency. After I finish the Camp Book and preparation for the inspection, I will help prepare the trading post, putting up the slotboard, cleaning, etc. ~ Ward Rooney If you would like to donate or help with the purchase of a glass front refridgerator, please contact our Scout Executive Joe Daniszewski 909-793-2463 x120 or Mike McCarty at x141 The California Inland Empire Council Will Be Presenting Information on the Programs Offered At: CAMP WILEY & CAMP EMERSON SATURDAY MAY 17, 2014 THE CALIFORNIA INLAND EMPIRE SCOUT SHOP WILL BE OFFERING FREE CLINICS THROUGHOUT THE DAY! Only 46 Hornaday Gold Medals have been granted since the inception of the adult program in 1984 and we are very lucky to have one of those rare, caring individuals in Venturing. The requirements for this honor are as follows: Was the candidate nominated by a recognized conservation or environmental organization? Did the letter of nomination received by the director of Conservation include an explanation of accomplishments? Were the accomplishments cited part of the nominee's paid professional responsibilities? Has the nominee influenced youth and educational programs emphasizing sound stewardship of our nation's natural resources and environmental improvement? Has the nominee rendered distinguished and unusual service to natural resource conservation and environmental improvement over a sustained period (at least 20 years)? Were the cited accomplishments at the regional, national, or international level? OBJECTIVE: The objective of peer-to-peer recruiting is to overcome youth access barriers through a diversified and magnified approach that will: - Personalize the invitation to join to each boy and adult family member
- Give access to the best-qualified prospective adult leaders
- Expand the outreach and market penetration
- Maintain Scouting’s ability to assist chartered organizations in youth outreach methods. These methods for peer-to-peer recruiting can be mixed and matched to suit the local situation:
- Small-group recruiting meetings “bring a buddy” events
- Incentives for boys and volunteers Small- Group Meetings
PROCESS: Step 1: The unit designates an event or meeting as a “bring a buddy” activity. Step 2: Flyers/invitations are given to each boy/leader/family in the pack to distribute in neighborhoods, religious institutions, schools, and businesses. Step 3: A “bring a buddy” activity is held for current and new members. Potential new leaders and youth members are identified, selected, and recruited. Step 4: New leaders and Cub Scouts are assigned to dens. Progress Since January 2014: District membership chairs recruited, Peer –to-per plan developed, New patch and incentive plan developed. But when she experienced an unexpected injury on a New Jersey hiking trail, Curry found herself assisted by the Boy Scouts of America. Writing in Scouting Magazine, Bryan Wendell says Scouts from Berkeley Heights encountered Curry on a trail in Harriman State Park in New York. Curry, 57, had broken her ankle. “We were hiking along, and we came to a trail intersection,” Scouter Rick Jurgens said, “and a lady was sitting on the ground with her one leg out. We didn’t think anything of it, but one of the guys asked if everything is OK. She said, ‘No, not really. I think I broke my ankle.’ She told us to keep going, but the guys refused.” Although Jurgens said he recognized Curry’s voice instantly, his scouts had no idea it was the famous TV journalist. Regardless, they went to work creating a splint for Curry. “We work on these requirements, and here’s an opportunity where it was a true test of all those First Class, Second Class first-aid requirements,” Jurgens said. “They got to use it and use it for real. And they did an outstanding job.” Read More..... | First Scoutmaster to be Canonized as a Saint St. John the XXIII was a Scoutmaster in the Italian Boy Scout Movement for several years when he served as a parish priest in a poor neighborhood in an Italian city. I had forgotten this fact when watching his canonization along with St. John Paul II on EWTN. I saw then Pope John XXIII at his weekly audience in Rome in 1962 after being drafted from BSA into the Army and when returning to BSA was delighted to find out that our BSA NC Committee on Catholic Scouting had already published the fact of his Scoutmaster tenure in one of its brochures.
