Welcome to our May 26th, 2014 Monday Memo

International Camporee 2014

Murrieta Crew 604 had 10 Scouts attend and have a blast at the International Camporee 5/16-18/2014. The weather was perfect, the scout spirit was outstanding, and activities and competitions were great. We made new scouting friends from all over and enjoyed learning about scouting in their area. Scouts enjoyed rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, archery, canoeing, games, and even some dodge ball! I have also attached some pictures of Troop 2011 of Wildomar, who also had 27 scouts attend International Camporee over this past weekend. A great time had by all who participated, and we are all looking forward to the next one here at Mataguay Scout Ranch, and I know our Crew is also interested in attending International Camporee in Mexico.

Troop 652's Day Hike

It was a perfect day for a hike in our "Own Backyard". A few Saturday's ago, Troop 652 of Rancho Cucamonga, Old Baldy District completed a "Pre-Requisite" Day Hike on the Sunset Peak Fire Look Out Trail. This was a fairly easy hike, 8.1 miles round trip with a 1,500 foot elevation gain. To qualify for the upcoming backpacking trip to San Jacinto Peak, the Scouts are required to go on the Pre-Req hike. There were 6 Adult Leaders and 13 Scouts on this hike. We took some Group shots up top, including some "Go-Pro Selfies".  After the hike, our Scoutmaster Emeritus, Mr. Eimen bought us all a cool Starbuck's drink to enjoy!

Youth Leaders Get Trained in Mt. Rubidoux

Scout spirit reigned at Cedar Badge – Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, which was held in the Mount Rubidoux District. The weekend training event, held May 16-17 at the park at the LDS Church on Blaine Street in Riverside,  also attracted Scouts from Five Nations, Arrowhead, Grayback, Old Baldy and High Desert districts. Enthusiasm was high all weekend as the 45 boys enjoyed pure Scouting: Learning while having fun.

Cedar Badge covered Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and  the Patrol Leader Handbook. Through games and training sessions, Scouts learned about planning and conducting  troop and patrol meetings, campfires, religious observances and songleading. Cedar Badge put a twist on the learning sessions in Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops. In the session on planning, Scouts enjoyed watching the youth staff prepare a peanut butter and jelly sandwich following the patrols’ rather incomplete directions. It was messy but a lot of fun. In another session, learning about  team development was made fun – and competitive – through the wide game of “Radio Towers.”

Scouts come away with a better understanding of their leadership roles and ideas to put some spark in their troop program. Scouts, who formed patrols and created flags and yells, also learned the value of teamwork and the patrol method. Patrol spirit was recognized with the staff handing out “carrots” – pieces of cloth, colored strings or other doodads – to hang on flags.

A closing campfire organized by the Scouts included the awarding of Cedar Badge patches and certificates.

Robert Quezada  was Scoutmaster for the Cedar Badge ILST. He was assisted by a staff of youths and adults, including a contingent of five from Sunrise District, which recently held its own Cedar Badge. The youth staff delivered the learning sessions using Teaching EDGE, modeled a boy-lead troop and demonstrated Scouting spirit at its finest.

Cedar Badge was created by Mt. Rubidoux’s training team and, in various incarnations, has been serving the district for more than three decades.  The program’s goal is to  supplement the scoutmaster’s responsibility of training his new leaders.

A Trip of a Lifetime

Dr. Robert Gates Named BSA's 35th President at National Annual Meeting

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) National Council today elected Dr. Robert M. Gates, former secretary of defense and former director of central intelligence, as the organization’s national president. In this volunteer role, Dr. Gates will lead the National Executive Board, which guides the Boy Scouts of America as it serves 2.5 million youth members, for two one-year terms. He is the 35th president of the BSA, following telecom pioneer and co-owner of the Seattle Mariners Wayne Perry.

“The Boy Scouts of America had a profound influence on my childhood and helped form the foundation of my career in public service. I’ve had tremendous opportunities in my life, but I can say without hesitation that my memories of Scouting are every bit as vivid and meaningful as what came later. I believe every boy deserves an opportunity to experience what Scouting offers,” said Dr. Gates. “Scouting teaches youth how to set and achieve goals, develops a deep commitment to serve others, and creates leaders for tomorrow who are not only prepared to serve their communities, but also prepared for life and leadership. Just as it did for me.”

Dr. Gates has a long history of participation and service in the BSA. He is a past member of the National Executive Board; a past president of the National Eagle Scout Association; a distinguished Eagle Scout; a recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest commendation given by the BSA for extraordinary service to youth; and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the highest mark of distinction and recognition for those with exceptional service and unselfish interests.

“On behalf of the Boy Scouts of America’s millions of youth members and adult leaders, I am honored to welcome Dr. Gates into the role of national president,” said Wayne Brock, Chief Scout Executive. “As one of our nation’s most respected public servants and a proven leader of the highest caliber, Dr. Gates is a shining example of how our organization positions individuals for success and he will be a great ambassador for sharing the Scouting story throughout the country.”

During his notable career, Dr. Gates has served eight U.S. presidents of both political parties. He is the only secretary of defense to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected president. Prior to his post at the Department of Defense, Dr. Gates was the president of Texas A&M University, the nation’s seventh-largest university. Dr. Gates also served as director of central intelligence and is the only career officer in the CIA’s history to rise from entry-level employee to director.

Dr. Gates has been awarded the National Security Medal and the Presidential Citizens Medal, has twice received the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, and has three times received the CIA’s highest award, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal. On his last day in office as secretary of defense, Dr. Gates was awarded the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Obama.

In addition to Scouting, Dr. Gates is the chancellor of the College of William & Mary and has served on the board of directors and executive committee of the American Council on Education and the board of directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.

A native of Kansas, Dr. Gates received his bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary, his master’s degree in history from Indiana University, and his doctorate in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University. He is the author of Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War, which was released in January 2014. His memoir, From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider’s Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War, was published in 1996. He and his wife, Becky, have two grown children.

"The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example."

~  Benjamin Disraeli (Earl of Beaconsfield)

Another Leaf Has Fallen

Another leaf has fallen,
another soul has gone.
But still we have God's promises,
in every robin's song.
For he is in His heaven,
and though He takes away,
He always leaves to mortals,
the bright sun's kindly ray.
He leaves the fragrant blossoms,
and lovely forest, green.
And gives us new found comfort,
when we on Him will lean
