Pack 247 Rides sbX Bus Line

Tiger Cub Den 8 from Pack 247 in San Bernardino rode the new sbX bus line to complete an Elective requirement and to promote public transportation to the Tiger Cubs and their families. The Den rode from the new Park and Ride facility on Palm Avenue, through the CSUSB campus, and down to the 40th Street/Kendall Drive station and back. They received paper bus model cutouts from the sbX ambassadors that were at the stops, and they asked questions of the ambassadors and bus drivers about public transportation and the environment.

Mt. Rubidoux and Five Nations District Camporee

The classic tug-of-war and starting a fire with two matches brought Boy Scouts back to the basics at the annual camporee held at Lake Perris State Recreational Area last weekend.

“Back to Basics” was the theme for the camporee and Webelosree co-hosted by Mt. Rubidoux and Five Nations districts  of the California Inland Empire Council, which  saw nearly 200 youths  from Webelos, Boy Scouting and Venture units compete in a variety of activities April 25-27.

The activities included competitions that challenged 24 patrols from many Scouting units in the district. In the “Blindfold Tent Set-up,” a patrol was blindfolded and guided into setting up a tent under the guidance of their patrol leader, who was not visually impaired. Patrol that did the set-up the fastest won. Nobody became lost at the map and compass event. And nobody could easily start a fire with kindling and matches.

Troops also competed for best designed campsite. Scouts with a bit of “Iron Chef” in them competed in the dutch oven cook-off. Judges ruled that Trenton Goopio of Troop 2 in Riverside made the best jambalaya in the dutch oven, earning him and his patrol a $25 gift card.

The Saturday activities ended with a campfire and induction of the newest members to the Order of the Arrow, the honor camper organization of the Boy Scouts.

The Webelosree program provided special age-appropriate activities for Webelo Scouts, boys who soon will be joining a Boy Scout troop. The boys could earn the Outdoorsman pin and learn to cook and to pack for themselves for an outing. They also tested their sense of direction with a map and compass.

The boys didn't have all the fun. Eighteen  adults worked on their basic leader training by learning outdoor skills that they can pass on to Scouts. Many of the cooks at the units were adults who showed off their culinary skills with steaks and grilled half-chickens.

The  camporee drew about 330 participants, according to Matt Barth, of Riverside, district chair. The camporee was supervised by John Vineyard, Scoutmaster of Troop 2.
This was the first time in many years that the Mt. Rubidoux and the Five Nations district joined forces on their camporee, spanning the areas of Riverside, Jurupa Valley, Woodcrest, Lake Matthew, Highgrove, Moreno Valley and Perris.

Pack 210 Visits Bass Pro Shop

To prepared for a fishing trip this weekend Wolf boys went to Bass Pro Shops store in Rancho Cucamonga. Visiting Bass Pro Shops was like visiting Disney Land except better!  We arrived at Bass Pro Shops around 11:45 which was the perfect timing, because we helped feed the fish in their 8,000 gallon fresh water tank and then we feed the trout in the indoor trout stream. Later, we were given a tour of Bass Pro Shops 180,000 Sq. Ft. store, and then the boys went on a scavenger hunt to find animals and logos, for which the boys received prizes. Finally, we got down to business and attended the Fishing Seminar which was given by Pro-Angler Pete Marino. Now if that wasn’t enough Bass Pro Shops General Manager Bob Minor surprised the boys with fishing poles courtesy of Bass Pro Shops.  ~ Entropy C Mond

Temescal District Merit Badge Clinic

Thanks, Robert.  This is very helpful follow-up to an enormously successful merit badge clinic for the Temescal District on Saturday!

A couple of observations.  Our estimates were low as to the number of boys, because these numbers say that we had 157 boys in classes for Session 1, 168 for Session 2, 158 for Session 3 and 125 for Session 4.  So, at our high point, we have 168 Scouts.

My estimate of 600 merit badges started was just slightly low of the 608 actual merit badges started.

This represents a lot of work and love on your part.  Thank you so much for all of your dedication to this big task.  You make it look easy and I know it’s not, which is a credit to the many hours of behind the scenes work you dedicate to this clinic (and many other YM activities).

Let me try and put this into perspective.  Because we teach both required and elective merit badges, if every boy followed these badges through to completion, this merit badge clinic effort is the equivalent of 26+ Eagle Scouts!

Well done, and deserving of thanks from our entire presidency, the Temescal District and CIEC!

Michael L. Poore, Stake Young Men’s President, Corona Stake

“Cinco de Mayo has come to represent a celebration of the contributions that Mexican Americans and all Hispanics have made to America.”

Cinco de Mayo is a great patriotic holiday in México, commemorating an improbable victory over invading French forces under Napoleon III in the 1860s, despite being outnumbered 2-1. This poster from 1901 is held by the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University.
