Welcome to our June 16th, 2014 Monday Memo

Family Camp

Riverside Pack 97 just completed their annual Family Camp at O'Neill Regional Park.  We had over 150 scouts and parents camping plus more that just came for the day.  The boys participated in a nature hike, a Scout Olympiad, Cub Mobile Races, Dutch Oven cooking, knot tying, whittling and more.  Every year, Pack 97 families attend our great family camp and participate in fun activities, camp fire sing a longs, and s'mores!

I want to extend special thanks to the parents and volunteers of Pack 97; including James and Valerie Merrill for running Family Camp, David and Jennifer Obert, Sarah Peters, Kristy and Tom Smith, Diane Skiff, Sam and Amy Hallenberg, Jacqueline Potochny, Brian Kleist, all the parents that helped make this happen, and the Scouts of Troop 90 (former Pack 97 Cubs) that helped all weekend. Great job!

John D. Skiff, Cubmaster - Riverside Pack 97

Troop 720 Helps Revitalize the The Rancho Cucamonga Pacific Electric Trail

Long straight rides and cool breezes highlight the Pacific Electric Bike Trail that goes from Fontana all the way to Claremont. Many of the individual cities along the route are trying to add even more excitement by adding stops along the way. Troop 720 spent 6 hours of down and dirty community service with the Friends of the Pacific Electric Trail helping create and beautify an official "Bike Repair Station Stop". Our day entailed clearing the entire parking lot and tree basins of deep ingrown weeds, dead plants, "baldy rocks" and more. Eventually the stop, located at the Viva La Vegan Supermarket, will have a full capacity underground Bike Repair Shop, Juice Bar and snack opportunity.

Allen Greenstein, Scoutmaster - Troop 720

It’s time to start preparing for summer camp, and there are two new videos to help you spread the word about the life-changing experiences our camps offer to Cub Scouts.

Tour & Activity FAQ's

Q. Why should I complete a tour and activity plan?
A. The tour and activity plan is a planning tool for best practices to be prepared for safe and fun adventure. Completing the plan may not address all possible challenges, but it can help ensure that appropriate planning has been conducted, that qualified and trained leadership is in place, and that the right equipment is available for the adventure.

In addition, the plan helps to organize safe and appropriate transportation to and from an event, and defines driver qualifications and minimum limits of insurance coverage for drivers and vehicles used to transport participants.

Please complete and submit this plan at least 21 days in advance (check with your local council) to ensure your council has enough time to review the plan and assist as necessary.

Q. When do I need to complete a tour and activity plan?
A. Times when a tour and activity plan must be submitted for council review include the following:

  • Trips of 500 miles or more; or
  • Trips outside of council borders (exception: not to your council-owned property); or
  • Trips to Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier, Philmont Scout Ranch, Summit Bechtel Reserve (you will be asked to present a copy of  your tour and activity plan upon arrival), national Scout jamboree, National Order of the Arrow Conference, or a regionally sponsored event; or
  • When conducting any of the following activities outside of council or district events:
    • Aquatics activities (swimming, boating, floating, scuba, etc.)
    • Climbing and rappelling
    • Orientation flights (process flying plan)
    • Shooting sports
    • Any activities involving motorized vehicles as part of the program (snowmobiles, boating, etc.); or
    • At a council's request (Contact your local council for additional guidelines or regulations concerning tour and activity plans; many have set guidelines for events or activities within council boundaries such as for Cub Scout overnight camping.)

Regardless, the tour and activity plan is an excellent tool that should be included in preparation for all activities, even those not requiring it. It guides a tour leader through itineraries, travel arrangements, two-deep leadership, supervision qualifications, and transportation. MORE FAQ's CLICK HERE

Get The Latest on 2014 (Venturing) and 2015 (Cub Scouting) Program Changes!

As you’ve heard, there are material changes coming to Venturing in 2014 and Cub Scouting in 2015 that will energize these programs to make them more dynamic and relevant to today’s youth and families. The following resources exist to help you and your council stay current on the latest information as it is released.

Program Updates Website: www.scouting.org/programupdates
The latest information on changes to the programs is located at this site and is updated as additional information is released. This site will always be the “one-stop shop” for the most current and accurate information available. On the site you will find information such as:

Project Overview—this outlines the program changes coming to Venturing, Cub Scouting, and Boy Scouting in 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively. It is intended for council-level volunteers and others looking for a 30,000-foot overview of the changes ahead.

PowerPoint Presentations—aimed at council, district, and unit leaders, these presentations communicate program changes and are suitable for use at committee meetings and in leadership discussions held throughout your council.

Frequently Asked Questions—this document addresses questions received over the past three years during the program update process. It serves to provide accurate information, debunk myths, and ensure your staff and volunteers are ready for the coming changes.

Web Banners—to help you provide program update information to your staff and volunteers, a series of Web banners and ads have been developed for council websites. Post these banners to your local sites and social media channels to allow for easy “one-click access” to the latest in program update information. The banners may be found at www.scouting.org/programupdates.

Philmont Training Center: www.philmontscoutranch.org/PTC.aspx
During the summer of 2014, the Philmont Training Center will be hosting conferences supporting both Venturing and Cub Scouting changes. Faculty will be members of the volunteer team that put together the program updates, and the conferences will deliver hands-on experiences and knowledge that attendees can bring back to their councils to share.

Conferences are scheduled as follows:

Cub Scouting—“Getting the 411 on the New Cub Scout Adventure Program”
Week 3                 June 22–28
Week 7                 July 20–26
Week 8                 July 27–Aug. 2
Week 10              Aug. 10–16

The program updates website also has a flier promoting the Cub Scout sessions at PTC, which would be useful to hand out at roundtables and committee meetings. Sessions are filling up fast, but there is still time to register, especially for Week 10.

Future Support
The above resources are ready and available now! Please begin to use them at your discretion. As 2015 approaches, additional resources will be added. For example, at the beginning of 2015 a series of unit-oriented webcasts will be offered to prepare unit leaders for the changes coming. Later in spring ’15, there will be revised training for both tenured and new unit leaders guiding them to execute a great Cub Scouting program for 2015–2016.

Thank you for everything you do and for your support in communicating these opportunities to your council, district, and unit leaders

Secondary Drowning Awareness Saves Lives

We as parents know we must be vigilant anytime our children are around water, but did you know a child could die from what’s sometimes called secondary drowning hours or even days after being in the water? I wasn’t aware of it until I read about it on a friend’s Facebook page.

Secondary drowning doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it’s critical for the victim to receive professional medical attention.

Secondary drowning occurs when a person aspirates (breaths in) water into their lungs and the victim cannot expel the water through coughing. It usually occurs following a near drowning incident. As little as a few ounces of water left in the lungs of a young child can trigger a physiological chain reaction where the lungs fill with fluid and become unable to transfer oxygen to the blood stream, leading to organ failure and eventually death.

Children who have inhaled water into their lungs may not show any serious symptoms right away. They may be able to walk and talk normally, only to fall seriously ill much later.

A child experiencing symptoms such as chest tightness, difficulty breathing, raspy voice, wheezing, or a persistent coughing that’s not associated with some other causes such as a cold after being in the water should be seen by a doctor. If left untreated, a child suffering from secondary drowning will become lethargic and confused as the brain is starved of oxygen.

“If there is an issue where a patient has a problem and nearly drowns, keep your attention up and make sure they aren’t showing any symptoms,” said. Dr. Webster Wong, who heads the Pediatrics Department at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. “I would never hold it against a parent who comes into the hospital and says, ‘There’s something wrong with my child, and I can’t assess it.’”

Dr. Wong emphasized that secondary drowning is not common, but he said parents should be aware of the symptoms of secondary drowning.

Positive Quote & Prayer
-------------------------------------

"If a man be gracious to strangers, it shows that he is a citizen of the world, and his heart is no island, cut off from other islands, but a continent that joins them."

    ~  Francis Bacon

At the Beginning of the Day

O God,
I find myself at the beginning of another day.
I do not know what it will bring.
Please help me to be ready for whatever it may be.

If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely.
If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly.
If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently.
If I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly.

Please free my thinking and feelings and the thinking and feelings of others, from all forms of self-will, self-centeredness, dishonesty, and deception.
Along with my brothers and sisters,
I need this freedom to make my choices today according to your desires.
Send your Spirit to inspire me in time of doubt and indecision so that, together, we can walk along your path.

Amen.
