Troop 652 Adventure

Troop 652 took a 12 mile backpacking trip with 12 Scouts and 8 Adults (2 of which were Eagle Scout Alumni, Tyer & Thomas). There were 4 boys that had never been on a backpacking trip before. We hiked 2.5 miles the first night, after taking the 7:00 p.m. Palm Springs Tram up.

Saturday, we Day Hiked 7 miles round trip and bagged the Peak.  Mount San Jacinto is the second highest Peak in Southern California,at 10,834'!! On Sunday we hiked out the 2.5 miles, took the Tram down and some of us headed straight to In-N-Out!! It was a great trip!

The People of Normandy Never Forget

The Fallen (8)

A large percentage of our country doesn't know of or care about Normandy. My guess is it has been removed from the text in History Books.

A few weekends ago, British artist Jamie, accompanied by numerous volunteers, took to the beaches of Normandy with rakes and stencils in hand to etch 9,000 silhouettes representing fallen people into the sand. Titled The Fallen 9000http://thefallen9000.info/, the piece is meant as a stark visual reminder of those who died during the D-Day beach landings at Arromanches on June 6th, 1944 during WWII. The original team consisted of 60 volunteers, but as word spread nearly 500 additional local residents arrived to help with the temporary installation that lasted only a few hours before being washed away by the tide.

NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor Course

The California Inland Empire Council, in association with the National Rifle Association and the Lucerne Valley Lions Club Shooting Range will be hosting a NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor Course. This class is not for beginners – there is a written test and a shooting test that are prerequisites (see below). The class will be intensive and there will be a written final examination. Upon completion, the instructor candidate will be a NRA certified Shotgun instructor, which is a requirement to operate a BSA shotgun range. Class is limited to 16 students, pre-registration is required.

When: Two Saturdays, July 19 and 26, 2014. 8 AM to 7 PM
Where: Lucerne Valley Lions Club Shooting Range
Course fee: $45.00

Successful completion of the pre course written test is required prior to enrollment in the course. The shooting qualification will be done on the first day of class.
There will be a NRA Instructor fee to be paid upon successful completion of the course – NRA membership not necessary.

Course Requirements:
- Registered BSA Adult Leader
- 21 Years of age minimum
- Pass written pre course examination with a score of 90%
- Pass the Shooting & Safety live fire qualification
- Bring your own shotgun and 50 rounds of ammunition
- No legal restrictions on firearm ownership or possession
- Eye and ear protection required

2014 Scout Expo Merit Badge Experience

September 26, 27 & 28, 2014
Glen Helen Regional Park, Devore, CA

500 Boy Scouts, Leaders and Parents will embark on the 2014 Scout Expo

Glen Helen is located just outside San Bernardino, CA and will host over 500 Boy Scouts, leaders and parents for a fun filled 2½ days of adventure. Scouts will come from all over the Inland Empire to participate in this Scouting Experience.

Tents will go up for a weekend of Camping and Scouting Activities: Games, Community Displays, Merit Badge Midway, Climbing Walls, Trading Post, and much more.....…………….Activities will be available all day Saturday. Camping starts on Friday Night September 26th.

The 2014 Scout Expo @ the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Rodeo will feature the Merit Badge Experience for the Boy Scouts in attendance as well as, but not limited to, the activities listed below.

“Confessions of a Bully: In gripping video, Cub Scout shares his lesson learned"

Cameron Thompson isn’t a bully anymore.

The second-grader and Cub Scout in Pack 322 of California’s Inland Empire Council learned his lesson, and now he’s sharing an anti-bullying message that’s sure to resonate with your Cub Scout-age boys.

The news media have taken notice; Cameron’s positive story was on the Today Show this morning. He’s even wearing a Cub Scout T-shirt during the interview with Today.
Bullying of any kind is prohibited in Scouting. That includes verbal, physical and cyberbullying. Stories like Cameron’s remind us what happens when bullying does occur.

In a well-produced video, Cameron explains his story:
“Recently I made the wrong choice,” he said. “A boy in class brought a Barbie doll to school for show and tell. I didn’t really understand a boy bringing a doll to school, so I thought it was funny. I told some friends, and I convinced them to come make fun of him with me.”

Once teachers noticed what was happening, they stopped the bullying. But the damage was done. Cameron’s mom reprimanded him and explained why it was the wrong choice.
“My parents, church, Cub Scouts all helped me learn what good choices are. But they can’t always be there,” Cameron said. “She asked me how I would feel if someone teased me or if someone was teasing my little brother.”

Cameron wrote a letter to apologize to the boy and promised never to treat him that way again. But he didn’t stop there. He started an anti-bullying club at school — his idea — and invited the boy he bullied to join the club with him. “I know I wouldn’t like it, so it helped me understand how the boy would feel,” Cameron said.

Stories like these are a little difficult to watch, but they’re real. Bullying exists, but by understanding and living Scouting’s values, Scouts and Venturers learn to be friendly, courteous and kind to others.

These Eagle Scouts Won Three of NESA’s Biggest Scholarships in 2014

You’re going to want to meet Cody, Donald and Ryan. These three Eagle Scouts won three of the National Eagle Scout Association‘s most prestigious scholarships in 2014 and have been spotlighted in a series of videos first shown at the BSA’s National Annual Meeting in May. Take time to watch all three videos below.

First up is Cody Eckels of Troop 300 from Tyrone, Pa.. He received the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award for his project that honors veterans with engraved pavers, military flags and statues complete with landscaping.

“I kinda grew up with Scouting,” Eckels said. “It showed me what’s the right thing to do and what’s not the right thing to do. … It really made me into the man I turned today.”

Next is Donald Martocello of Troop 601 from Moorestown, N.J. He received the $50,000 NESA STEM scholarship. He plans to use that money to study molecular biology at Princeton. It won’t be long before he’s helping rescue ecosystems after oil spills or harsh pollution.

“The best way I can thank the generous men and women who have awarded me the STEM scholarship is to make good on their investment. … I will make good on your investment by making the world a safer, greener and sustainable place that humans can use and enjoy,” he said.

The final recipient is Ryan Dahl of Troop 201 from Overland Park, Kan. He received the $25,000 United Health Foundation scholarship and plans to study medicine.
“The Scout Law says a Scout is helpful, and being a doctor would allow me to most directly impact people’s lives in a positive way,” Dahl says.

President, Governors Make it Official: June is Great Outdoors Month

Love the outdoors? I’ve got just the thing.

June, a month whose arrival is celebrated by school-age children nationwide, doesn’t just mean the end of classes.

It means the unofficial beginning of outdoors season. June is Great Outdoors Month, and it’s overflowing with reasons to head outside to celebrate our beautiful country.

President Barack Obama, in his official proclamationhttp://www.funoutdoors.com/files/Presidential%20Proclamation_1.pdf of June as Great Outdoors Month, explained the role every American — and therefore every Scout and Scouter — plays in protecting nature.

“This month, as we enjoy the natural splendor of our nation, let us stay true to a uniquely American idea — that each of us has an equal stake in the land around us, and an equal responsibility to protect it. Together, let us ensure our children and grandchildren will be able to look upon our lands with the same sense of wonder as all the generations that came before.”

That’s a challenge met by packs, troops, teams, posts, ships and crews 12 months out of the year.

States have joined the fun, too. Governors of 42 states have issued official proclamationshttp://americasgreatoutdoors.org.php53-16.ord1-1.websitetestlink.com/proclamations/ for the month, including Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, pictured signing the proclamation above. Some governors have even made videos; check out Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe’s video below as a great example.

My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.

And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:

Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.

Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.

They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.

They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest-until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war.

For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom.

And for us at home -- fathers, mothers, children, wives, sisters, and brothers of brave men overseas -- whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them--help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice.

Many people have urged that I call the Nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.

Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.

And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.

And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.

With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.
