Welcome to our August 11th, 2014 Monday Memo | | Earn the William D. Boyce New-Unit Organizer Award and Give the Gift of Scouting to Youth in Your Community!? The new William D. Boyce New-Unit Award recognizes volunteers who organize one or more new traditional units. Celebrating Boyce’s organizing spirit, the award consists of a silver square knot on a background of yellow, green, and red—representing the traditional Scouting program colors. Award Requirements: With the approval of the district committee chair, serve as the organizer and complete the successful organization of one new traditional unit. Organize the unit by following all (twelve) procedures as published in the New Unit Organization Process, No. 34196, ensuring that new unit leadership is trained, program is organized and begun, the new unit committee is functioning, a unit commissioner is assigned, all paperwork is processed, and the unit charter is presented to the chartered organization. Only one volunteer can be recognized as the organizer for each new unit. Three program devices can be earned and worn on the new-unit organizer knot for each additional new traditional unit organized. Each program device represents the type of unit organized. Multiple program devices from the same program may be earned and worn. The new-unit organization award recognizes volunteers for organizing traditional units after March 1, 2005. Recognition items in addition to the square knot include a new-unit organizer certificate and lapel pin. New-Unit Organizer Award Troop 556 High Adventure Trip We decided to hike to Palisade Glacier just west of Big Pines. There were four adult leaders and ten boys who made the trip. The trail head starts about 8 to 10 miles outside of the town of Big Pines off US 395. We hiked to an altitude of 10,000 feet on day one to "First Lake" and made base camp there. The next few days were spent taking day hikes around lakes two and three and also up to the glacier which is at 12,365'. You will notice that the water in several of the lakes is a aqua blue color, because it is fed by glacier water. The lake water temperature is very cold, but the boys didn't seem to mind jumping in and swimming. I chicken'd out on swimming. Our base camp was beautifully nestled among the trees and we were only a few feet from the lake itself. Clear streams nearby provided ample water for cooking and drinking. Each morning the entire group would climb a group of rocks in camp that overlooked the lake. There we would have a short religious devotional and plan the days activities. The experience was absolutely phenomenal. The scenery was breathtaking and the weather cooperated with us, except for one evening of rain. What a choice experience to be in the wilderness with these fine boys and such devoted leaders. Silver Beaver Nominations Nominate an outstanding Scouter for the Silver Beaver Award. Emergency Preparedness Event – Zombie Apocalypse Nov. 8th or 9th, 2014 at Green Zone 11- For Scouts, friends and family (open to the public) In this fun and educational event we will give scouts and non-scouts ways to be prepared in a real-life emergency. Using the pop culture awesomeness of a zombie apocalypse, we present an immersive and interactive theatrical environment that portrays a community of human survivors in the aftermath of a catastrophe (in this case a zombie apocalypse). Themed vendors display their goods, survival gear, crafts of all kinds, games of skill like archery, interactive survival techniques, pre-industrial technologies, displays of sustainable living and alternate power generating technology demonstrations. Learn first aid and disaster preparedness in workshops presented by the Red Cross and other groups. Become a CDC Zombie Research Scientist to learn more about zombies, in the zombie awareness arena. Learn how to create survival gear by recycling, foraging for food in the wild and much more. For the Scouts there will be specific stations to stop at to earn your patch program: there is a special patch designed just for the event. For everyone else, friends or family it’s just a day of pure fun, walking through a world of adventure they will never forget. There are other activities coming up too- Monster Make-up demonstrations, Spam cooking contest, and maybe even a Zombie 5k run! We are also a sponser of Scouting For Food! Please bring a bag of food to donate!! So come, Scouts, friends and family to experience street theater, music and dance, food and drink, survival demonstrations and zombies, all while surrounded by the weird and wonderful denizens of this Strange New World. Survivors, please come dressed appropriately for survival if you would like to- (picture Mad Max, Steam Punk or The Walking Dead). See if you can continue to survive or become infected. Training | If you had a magic wand, would you use it to make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority? Well, such a magic wand does exist—in the form of the learning programs for leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. | Common sense tells us training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader is knowledgeable and more confident in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program all it can be! These pages contain many of the “magic wands” and resources. Scout them out! http://www.scouting.org/training.aspx? P.R.A.Y. Updater for Member of BSA What's New?
