Welcome to our August 18th, 2014 Monday Memo | | Recruit New Cub Scouts! Troop 652 Summer Camp Summer camp in July at Emerald Bay, Catalina Is., was a BLAST! Troop 652 was one of the largest Troops there (as usual), with 36 Scouts and 3 Adult Leaders participating. The Scouts had a great time earning Merit Badges like Oceanography, Swimming, Rifle Shooting and many more. Only 8 of the badges were not completed, so the Scouts will finish them here at home. There were 130 Badges completed! Troop 652 had a great time participating in the BBQ on the Beach, Troop Kayaking, Mountain Bike Ride, Snorkeling, War Canoe, Aquacade and more! In Aquacade, we took second place in two different events! The first was “George Washington, Crossing the Delaware”, where the boys pushed a boat with Mrs. Eimen across the water. The second was the Canoe, Kayak, Swim & Run Race called "Message to Garcia". Drew, Sean, Sean, David and Moses really gave it their all, great Teamwork Troop 652!! What time is it? SIX-FIFTY-TWO!! These Scouts have made memories at camp that will last a lifetime! Christy Eimen , ASM/Camping Chair Troop 377 Summer Camp at Camp Chawanakee On Aug 2nd Troop 377 departed from Bermuda Dunes and journeyed to Camp Chawanakee for Summer Camp. There were 27 Scouts (including one from Troop 50) and 6 adults. We were greeted with plenty of merit badge opportunities, waterfront activities, great weather, and a friendly staff. While scouts were away at merit badge classes, adult leaders were given the opportunity to take part in a C.O.P.E. course which included a zip line. Leaders also participated in a “golf” tournament, the climbing wall, and even took a welding class. On Thursday night the troop headed across Shaver Lake in canoes and rowboats to sleep under the stars. The next morning we canoed back, all before the break of dawn. After, some scouts (and leaders) ran a mile in the Chieftain’s Run and went on a Polar Bear Swim to earn the Camp Chawanakee Iron Bear award. At the end of the week, Troop 377 was made Honor Troop by scoring well on campsite inspections, doing service projects, and being enthusiastic. For many scouts in the troop this was their first summer camp. Scouts earned a total of 102 merit badges!! Emergency Preparedness Event – Zombie Apocalypse Nov. 8th or 9th, 2014 at Green Zone 11- For Scouts, friends and family (open to the public) In this fun and educational event we will give scouts and non-scouts ways to be prepared in a real-life emergency. Using the pop culture awesomeness of a zombie apocalypse, we present an immersive and interactive theatrical environment that portrays a community of human survivors in the aftermath of a catastrophe (in this case a zombie apocalypse). Themed vendors display their goods, survival gear, crafts of all kinds, games of skill like archery, interactive survival techniques, pre-industrial technologies, displays of sustainable living and alternate power generating technology demonstrations. Learn first aid and disaster preparedness in workshops presented by the Red Cross and other groups. Become a CDC Zombie Research Scientist to learn more about zombies, in the zombie awareness arena. Learn how to create survival gear by recycling, foraging for food in the wild and much more. For the Scouts there will be specific stations to stop at to earn your patch program: there is a special patch designed just for the event. For everyone else, friends or family it’s just a day of pure fun, walking through a world of adventure they will never forget. There are other activities coming up too- Monster Make-up demonstrations, Spam cooking contest, and maybe even a Zombie 5k run! We are also a sponser of Scouting For Food! Please bring a bag of food to donate!! So come, Scouts, friends and family to experience street theater, music and dance, food and drink, survival demonstrations and zombies, all while surrounded by the weird and wonderful denizens of this Strange New World. Survivors, please come dressed appropriately for survival if you would like to- (picture Mad Max, Steam Punk or The Walking Dead). See if you can continue to survive or become infected. Email Vicki at: zombies.vicki@aol.com Scouting Teaches Self-Reliance The Boy Scouts have certainly been under scrutiny lately. They can’t seem to please either side of the conservative/liberal tug-of-war over its policies. Yet one indisputable fact is that the Boy Scouts of America has been training boys to be great men for over a hundred years. The list of Eagle Scouts that have gone on to greatness is long and even longer when this list includes Scouts as a whole. The majority of this transformation transpires off-the-beaten-path in their camps. Many attend local camps year-round. But the camp that’s the most revered — and changes boys to men in an almost “fraternal order” way — is Philmont Scout Ranch, the oldest and most popular of its four High Adventure camps. Say the word Philmont to a Scout over 14 and chances are he either went there or knows someone who did. Those who have experienced it speak of it with reverence and joy. Read More.......
