Army Major Creates Boy Scouts Troops for Children in Afghanistan

Arriving in Afghanistan in 2010, U.S. Army Maj. Glenn Battschinger, homesick for his two Eagle Scout sons, knew right away how to make a difference. “There were hundreds of children who swarmed myself and the other soldiers coming and going from the base,” he tells PEOPLE. “The kids wanted attention and needed something to do.” Battschinger pictured them in uniforms, tying knots and carving wood, just like his sons, Gregory, 17, and Cedric, 15, did back home in Mays Landing, New Jersey. One week later, after receiving the go-ahead from leaders of three villages surrounding the Finley-Shields Army Operating Base, Battschinger gathered 40 Afghan boys in an orange orchard outside the base for Qasabah Troop No. 1′s first Boy Scout meeting. After the kids were taught the Boy Scout pledge, Battschinger and several volunteers gave them each a 3-foot strand of parachute cord for knot-tying that doubled as a neckerchief. READ MORE.......

Los Angeles Dodgers 13th Annual Scouts Day and Egg Drop

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be having their annual Scout Day and Egg Drop Contest at Dodger Stadium. This will be Saturday, August 23. Knot Tying Event

Cub Scout Safari 2014 Plan now to attend a day of fun and adventure.  Tiger Cubs and their adult partner will have opportunities to participate in games, crafts, and learn new Scout skills. WHO: All Tiger Cubs and their Adult Partner.  1:1 ratio required. Emergency Preparedness Event – Zombie Apocalypse

Nov. 8th or  9th, 2014 at Green Zone 11- For Scouts, friends and family (open to the public)

In this fun and educational event we will give scouts and non-scouts ways to be prepared in a real-life emergency. Using the pop culture awesomeness of a zombie apocalypse, we present an immersive and interactive theatrical environment that portrays a community of human survivors in the aftermath of a catastrophe (in this case a zombie apocalypse). Themed vendors display their goods, survival gear, crafts of all kinds, games of skill like archery, interactive survival techniques, pre-industrial technologies, displays of sustainable living and alternate power generating technology demonstrations. Learn first aid and disaster preparedness in workshops presented by the Red Cross and other groups. Become a CDC Zombie Research Scientist to learn more about zombies, in the zombie awareness arena.  Learn how to create survival gear by recycling, foraging for food in the wild and much more. For the Scouts there will be specific stations to stop at to earn your patch program: there is a special patch designed just for the event.  For everyone else, friends or family it’s just a day of pure fun, walking through a world of adventure they will never forget.  There are other activities coming up too- Monster Make-up demonstrations, Spam cooking contest, and maybe even a Zombie 5k run! We are also a sponser of Scouting For Food! Please bring a bag of food to donate!!

So come, Scouts, friends and family to experience street theater, music and dance, food and drink, survival demonstrations and zombies, all while surrounded by the weird and wonderful denizens of this Strange New World. Survivors, please come dressed appropriately for survival if you would like to- (picture Mad Max, Steam Punk or The Walking Dead).  See if you can continue to survive or become infected. Welcome to Green Zone 11!

Eagle Scout's Portrait Is your Eagle Scout's portrait on the Eagle Honor Wall at council headquarters the Jack Dembo Scout Center? September 6 Eagle Scouts or Silver Awardees should come to CIEC's service center for their complimentary portrait to display on council's permanent Honor Wall Exhibit. Appointments are suggested and can be reserved by going to www.GradPortraits.com and follow through to the online reservation system. Walk-ins are accepted but appointments take precedence. The year round portrait program will create images at Jack Dembo Service Center through the year. Their next sessions will be September 6 and in December, or you may go to GradPortraits Orange County Studio.
