Thank you both so much for your dedication to our community and to the Scouting movement which means so much to all of us. Thanks again to each of you ! You’re the best !!! God bless ! Paul Foster, Event Chair, Council Vice President of Program California Inland Empire Council Alumni Association 2015 Strategic Plan VISION To re-connect Scouts with each other in order to promote a spirit of friendship; emotional ties to the organization; and engage alumni with the local council, their districts, and units, to promote the mission of the Boy Scouts of America and generate additional volunteers, advocacy, and donations. MISSION STATEMENT Reconnect alumni with Scouting friends and mentors … and local councils. Rekindle enthusiasm for Scouting and the values it represents. Re-engage alumni to become active in Scouting again. The Scouting Alumni Association is our call to find Scouting alumni and invite them to get involved with the Boy Scouts of America again. In addition to former Scouts, Scouting alumni include all those positively impacted by the BSA—family members of Scouts (past and present), volunteers, Scouters, community leaders, and the millions of Americans who benefit from Scouting in their communities every day. BACKGROUND The concept of Scouting alumni associations began very early with camp staff alumni groups and broadened in 1925 when fledgling Eagle Scout associations began to independently appear in local councils across the country. These efforts finally grew into the formation of the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) in May 1972 with a membership potential of now more than a million and a half living Eagle Scouts. With NESA, Scouting created a unique organization—a manpower resource with the express purpose of bringing together Eagle Scouts of all ages so that they might be of greater service to their local councils, their communities, and themselves. Now it is time to focus on the other 96% of Boy Scouts and all the leaders, parents, charter partners, neighbors and friends of Scouting. Estimates of the membership potential are from 50 to more than one hundred million. Imagine how many youth we can serve and the lives that will be changed as a result of reconnecting them with Scouting at some level. The BSA Alumni Association stands to be the LARGEST Alumni Associations in the world. We have the people. We just need to find, reconnect, rekindle, and re-engage them. This is our mission. All those prospects represent the future of membership, leadership and service in the California Inland Empire Council, and the whole Boy Scouts of America. Besides NESA, there are many different constituent groups of Scouts and those who qualify as BSA alumni: Life Scouts; firefighters; attorneys; pilots; physicians, Wood Badgers; Order of the Arrow; camp staffers; etc. MOVING FORWARD Because Scouting alumni can vary greatly in age, geography, affiliations, and technological savvy, we are taking a multifaceted approach to structure the program. For example, the Internet will be our best resource for finding and engaging many of our alumni, but for others, it isn’t relevant to their lives at all. So, we are using a variety of methods to reach our goals: Where are these Alumni? Consider this: A lifetime Scouting career: 1. Cub Scouts – ages 7-10 2. Boy Scouts – ages 11-18 3. Order of the Arrow / Venturing / Exploring – ages 14-20 | 4. Alpha Phi Omega / college – ages 18-22+ 5. Adult NESA member / supporting role – age 21 + ?? 6. Adult volunteer – ages 21+ / 30+ / 35+ ?? | “Scouting Gap Years” – ages 21-35 (?) – Eagle Scouts often disconnect from Scouting while pursuing higher education, establishing careers and forming families. How can we find them, reengage them, and keep them involved? Metropolitan areas, like San Bernardino and Riverside, have a large influx of talented people each year -- who move in for college or graduate school, to begin their career or to start a family. A reasonable percentage of those men are Eagles, and women are lovers of scouting. Lets find them, reconnect them with Scouting, reengage them to the extent they’d like, and maintain a connection during the Scouting Gap Years? IN order to create a viable experience, we will execute a plan of the 6M’s to effectively gather these valuable lovers of scouting. Here are those 6 Ms’. The 6 Ms (in this order) Memories - “smell of the camp fire, feel the cool breeze, roar of the river ” Marketing - Tell the scouting story Mentors - Friends, mentors, and influencers | Membership - Join the movement to give back Manpower - Put them to work at whatever level, and position they are comfortable Money - After a firm value has been created, the money will come | What have other successful councils done? * Define local affinity groups already networking * Ask them and then Give them what they want * Tell the Local Scouting story * Make your website easy to navigate and full of useful information | * Remind them what Scouting is all about * Help Scout Alumni make connections (Internships, Job boards) * Build local vendor affiliation in the Abenity rewards program. | CEIC Alumni Association, Billy Rosenberg, Chair Seven Tips for Making Red Ribbon Week More Effective What is Red Ribbon Week? Each year community organizations across the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week to promote awareness of substance abuse prevention among youth. The event honors the memory of a drug enforcement officer, Enrique Camarena, who was murdered in 1985. This year Red Ribbon Week is October 23rd to October 31st, 2014. According to SAMHSA, Red Ribbon Week encourages individuals, families, and communities to take a stand against the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. The observance focuses on educating the public on the destructive effects of alcohol and drugs, and the health-positive alternatives that are available to youth and adults. As part of Red Ribbon Week observances across the Nation, participants wear or display a red ribbon to symbolize zero tolerance for illegal drug use by youth and a commitment to substance abuse prevention. Schools and community groups typically organize a variety of activities including contests, workshops, rallies, theatrical and musical performances, and other family-centered and educational events. Lyle Mills, Chairman, Western Region, Area 4 Training Committee “Fun With a Purpose” FAQs Q1 What is the situation? A1 We, the National Council, are asking local councils and their units to not use the phrase “Fun with a Purpose” as a promotional slogan for any Scouting activities. Q2 Why? A2 “Fun with a Purpose” is a registered trademark that is owned by the company which publishes Highlights magazine. Out of respect for that company’s trademark rights, we are asking local councils and units to not use the phrase. Just as BSA expects others to respect its trademark rights, we strive to respect the rights of others. Q3 This sounds like a lot of trouble. Has the BSA received any specific complaints about this? A3 The publisher of Highlights magazine has contacted the BSA about this issue and we are cooperating with them out of respect for their trademark rights. Q4 What do I need to do? A4 Two things. First, delete all instances of the phrase from your local council or unit website, including uses of the phrase in text as well as in any graphics. Second, use a different phrase in the future to promote your Scouting activities. Q5 Can I use a similar phrase such as “Fun Has a Purpose” or “Fun and Purpose”? A5 No. You should use a new phrase that is distinctively different from “Fun With a Purpose”, not just a variation of it. Q6 What about materials that I have already printed and/or distributed? A6 In order to avoid waste, you do not need to destroy any hard copy materials you have already printed. And you do not need to go out and collect/retrieve any hard copies that you have already distributed. But going forward, you should use a phrase other than “Fun with a Purpose” to promote your Scouting activities. Q7 Am I going to get sued? A7 BSA and the Highlights publishing company are working together cooperatively, and we do not expect the publishing company to take any action against local councils or units that have used the phrase in the past. Q8 Highlights magazine has contacted me/my council/my unit directly. What do I do? A8 In the spirit of the Scout Law, be courteous and respectful in any communication with the publisher of Highlights magazine. Also, promptly notify the Member Care department at 972- 580-2489 of any communication you might receive from Highlights magazine. Q9 Since I can’t use “Fun with a Purpose” anymore, I need some help creating a new tagline or slogan to promote my council’s or unit’s activities. Is any assistance available? A9 Yes. Please contact the Marketing department at the National Office or visit the Marketing Toolbox section of www.Scouting.org. Scouting Cartoons From 1967 Positive Quote & Prayer ------------------------------------- "Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness." ~ Seneca Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. ~ Saint Francis | Joe Daniszewski Scout Executive/CEO California Inland Empire Council, BSA PO Box 8910 1230 Indiana Court Redlands, CA 92374 909.793.2463, Ext. 120 877.732.1450 909.793.0306 Fax | Monday Memo is from Scout Executive Joe Daniszewski and contains his reflection on what is happening within the Council.
