Relay for Life is a 24 hour event to raise funds for cancer awareness and research. Relay for Life was held at Canyon Lake Middle. There were 15 teams, including Troops 2011's "Scouting for a Cure". There were 14 members on the team. Troop 2011 set-up the event Oct. 9th, setting out signs and banners, setting up tables and chairs, and assembling trash cans for the event. On Saturday, scouts did opening flag, trash detail, and set-out luminary bags for the luminary event that evening. The luminary event consisted of small bags lit up and lined the track to honor those still fighting cancer or those that have lost their battle to cancer. On Sunday, scouts cleaned up the event by taking down signs, taking down tables and chairs, and cleaning up trash. In addition to community service, scouts were a part of the "Scouting for a Cure" team. The team helped run the booth, walked theme laps (including a super hero lap, neon lap, and Disney lap), and helped raise funds for cancer awareness. The team raised over $1,000 for the cause through raffle ticket sales, coin wars, and cancer ribbon item sales. Between the youth and leadership, scout worked over 200 community service hours. This is the 2nd year Troop 2011 has had a team. "Scouting for a Cure" was initially formed in 2011 by Andrew Vicnaire for an Eagle Scout project. The efforts continue with Troop 2011 supporting the cause through community service and raising cancer awareness. |
