BSR Summer Camp 2016

From the Camp Director:
Some boys wait all year for summer camp, like some boys wait all year for Christmas. They have practiced their scouting skills over and over until they get it just right. At camp is when they can put those skills to good use. Be it swimming, hiking, or knot tying, camp is a great place to spend some time this summer, and show off these skills. Register now and get 2015 prices for next summer!  Registration fees will be going up after December. Don't miss out, spaces are already filling up. Contact our Council office today!

From the Program Director:
We all know Boy Scouts like sleeping under the stars, but there's all that time before they fall asleep. This summer we will be having so much fun, there won't be any time for sleep!  I could talk about merit badges, but camp is all about fun, friends, and adventure. We're not in the camping business, we're in the business of changing the lives of everyone that comes to camp through the Scout Oath and Law.

From the Camping Specialist:
It’s looking like another banner year for shooting sports and with our latest NRA grant request we expect to again be able to offer all of our archery and shooting programs at no additional cost!  Very few BSA shooting programs can say the same and we take great pride in our claim to be the best program in California!  Come shoot with us this summer!

Wankik Flag Presentation

On October 6, the Wanakik Chapter ceremony team presented the colors, in ceremonial regailia, to open the weekly meeting of the Riverside City Council. Advisors Judy Graeber, Rick Pohlers and Ryan Nakatani coordinated the team.

Mr. Nakatani introduced the team to the City Council and the audience, explaining the role of the Order of the Arrow and acknowledging the OA centennial. James Vineyard led the presentation of the colors by Christian Aguilar, Ben Nakatani, Austin Ellison, Michael Burnard, and Thomas Aguilar.

The presentation was especially meaningful to the City’s newest council member, John Burnard, as his son Michael’s participation was a surprise.

The Ethan Giving Tree Program

The CIEC Redlands & Old Baldy National Scout Shops is providing an opportunity for the scouting community to help local scout members who may be in need of uniforms and uniform items.

This help will be done through The Ethan Giving Tree program starting November 14 through December19, 2015.The Ethan Giving Tree program works on a donation basis. An Ethan tree (similar to an Angel tree) will be set up at the Scout Shop with Ethan cards on it. Each card will have the first name of the Scoutalong with the uniform items that they need. There will also be a space for other items they may want such as books, crafts, camping items, etc.Customers and Scout supporters can purchase theitem(s)in their local Scout Shop and give them to the store staff to collect for each child.

We will keep the name of the individual(s) confidential. Only the store staff will have access to the Scout’s name and your contact information. A code will be issued that will match a card in the safe that will have your contact information, so as the donations are collected store staff will contact you so arrangements for pickup can be made.

We need your assistance to make this project a success. Please fill out the information on this Form and return to the store by November 9, 2015 for every scout who would benefit from donations from the scouting community to complete their full uniform.

If you have any concerns or questions please contact the store staff by email:

We congratulated all the boys for being the top shooters in all of California Inland Empire Council. We would also like to thank the parents and leaders for bringing the boys this event.

Thanks again for a great year! Don & Laurie Curtis, Co-Chairs, Cub Archery

Bethel AME Church Uses Bible Patches in Local Park
Bethel AME Church in Lebanon, Ohio took to heart that the Bible Patch Series from P.R.A.Y. is for all ages. The congregation organized a "family style" gathering and met in a local park to enjoy food, fellowship, and Bible study together. Neighbors came out with treats and joined in the discussion. They ended the program with a pizza party at the church attended by friends and family.

According to Rev. Karen Schaeffer, M.Div., Ph.D., "We did use a portion of the program so that five people earned their first patch. We intend to continue in the future with modifications based on what we learned during our first 3 lessons... significant forethought needs to be given about how to meaningfully include pre-readers in the activities. Our youngest participant was a five year old and our most mature was approximately sixty years of age."

Rev. Schaeffer learned about P.R.A.Y. at the African Methodist Episcopal Church annual Christian Education Department gathering in Nashville last spring. The AMEC Scouts provided a session that featured information about the Bible Patch Series. "This was a good fit with our local work toward relaunching Christian Education efforts in our historic setting."

Summer Camp

We had our Troop Chaplain's Aide run the program at one of our summer camps and they did it daily. Probably not exactly as outlined ;-), but seemed to be very well received and letting it be boy run I think added to it.

Hands-On Activities for The Good Book Patch

First Presbyterian Church
Woodbridge, NJ

I am head of Christian Education at the church and am also a Cub Scout Den Leader.

We regularly host the God and Me and God and Family programs at our church, so when we saw the new RP3 patch program we knew it was for us.  I put out the word and got 20 children age 1st thru 4th grade to come out on 3 Wednesday evenings in September.  I would say about 65% were either Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts.  We went through the scripture and discussions on each sheet and then played some fun games and activities to reinforce the lessons.  Some of the activities included:

1. Building with Legos and taking Legos apart to show how the kings in Josiah's time would build up idols and tear them down, and also how Josiah was rebuilding the temple.
2. We broke apart geodes to show how amongst the ruins of the temple -treasure "The lost book" can be found.
3. We broke apart into two teams and had the children put the books of the Bible in order (we wrote the names on clothespins and had the kids clip them to a clothing line).
4. We did some training exercises and had the kids try to quickly look up Bible verses.

The kids really enjoyed it and we plan to try another RP3 patch program in January/February. We are running a God and Family program beginning in a few weeks and then will be busy with Christmas, of course. We absolutely LOVED the program and are excited to try it out again with the next patch soon!

Passing of a Great Scouter

A great Scouter passed away. My father-in-law John E. Rose was a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years and dedicated his life to scouting. He was a very active Merit Badge Counselor and volunteered to work on staff at scout camp for many years. He earned the Silver Beaver and a number of other awards. He was very proud to be a Vigil in the Order of the Arrow. He was a great guy and a good friend, he will be sorely missed.

Prayer for the Day

Almighty God, help me in these fleeting days that I may not use my time to consider and hesitate, but be positive in my desires and pursue them. Grant that I may have the strength to hold each day precious, and live it more than consistently.
