Willis "Beau" Sawyer's Sevice this Saturday November 21st

Our Scouting community has been greatly diminished with the passing of long-time Scouter Willis “Beau” Sawyer, who served our Council as an adult leader for more than 30 years.

Beau began as Cubmaster with Pack 62, then moved on to Troop 16 where he was an Assistant Scoutmaster and, ultimately, the Troop Committee Chairman; however, his Order of the Arrow service is even more notable. He accepted many roles within Cahuilla Lodge, including Wanakik Chapter Adviser, as well as Cahuilla Lodge Advisor. A Brotherhood Member, with the Vigil Honor name of Klamachpin; which is interpreted as “Quiet One”, Beau was never one to seek the limelight, choosing instead to humbly accept any task without expectation of reward or acclamation; yet, awards he did receive. He was honored as Cahuilla Lodge Arrowman of the Year in 1994, and subsequently received the coveted Founder’s Award.

A Silver Beaver  recipient, Beau’s passion was in the realm of training. He was a Wood Badge Assistant Course Director and served a dozen years on the faculty of Foxfire, where he was Clan Chieftain (Course Director) in 2008.

An Army Viet-Nam Era Veteran, Beau is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughter Heather; son Heath, who is an Eagle Scout; and two grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 21st at The Vineyard Fellowship, 935 N. McKinley, Corona, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made by contacting Mike Downs at 54miked@gmail.com

The Sun News Article

A Highland man with a lifetime of service to the Boy Scouts of America was killed Saturday in a freak accident in Johnson Valley when a launched homemade model rocket struck him in the face.

Michael Bentley, 50, was watching his friend launch the rocket during the Boy Scouts of America’s annual “Rocket Rave” event during which commercial and homemade hobby model rockets are launched, authorities said.

The launch was successful but Bentley lost sight of the rocket and its direction of travel, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release. Read More.....

Stay Alert!

Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America

From: PDC Carl Singer, National Homeland Security Committee Chairman
and Post Commander Bruce Kanis, Post 215 PA

To: ALL Members and Officers:

Recent worldwide and political events have escalated to create a serious concern for our members both at official meetings and while enjoying your daily functions. It is important to not panic, but to become alert to situations you may (and hope you never) experience.

Members should become aware and understand that persons with radical ideas not normally observed in the USA have intent to harm civilians. It is important to understand that if you think of terrorists as the enemy, that this type of enemy is not the same as what you once might have fought against as sponsored by any defined State.

The recent bombing attack of a Russian Metrojet flight last month, along with terrorist attacks in France, Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan, provide proof that a worldwide conflict exists.

JWV urges all echelons and members to become aware of situations that may cause harm, yet can be minimized when proper plans are developed.

Members need to understand that they play an important part of homeland security by being observant and using plans in place if a situation were to occur. Members need to understand the difference between hard and soft targets, and how to safely react. Read More.....

Boy Scout Saves the Day with his Bugle!

As community leader and Army veteran Felix Diaz closed out the event near the Veterans Memorial that he founded nearly 20 years ago, he told the audience that "Taps" would be played via a recording because the bugle player could not perform.

At that moment, 12-year-old Isaac Lehndorfer with Boy Scout Troop 756 emerged from the crowd with bugle in hand and played while a sea of hands faced the American flag and saluted. After he played, young and old in uniform stood in line to shake his hand.

“That young man saved the day,” one unidentified Army veteran whispered to the Daily Press. “That’s the spirit of America.” Read the Entire Story....

12 Things You Can Learn from a Scout

Some people think the Scout Law only applies to Scouts – but in reality, you don’t have to be a Scout to live by the key principles of Scouting. The 12 pillars of the Scout Law are universal guides that anyone can take inspiration from to be their best self.

In fact, Lifehack, a website that offers helpful productivity pointers, recently shared “The 12 Things a Boy Scout Can Teach You About Being Successful.” The blog explains how the Scout Law can benefit anyone seeking a fulfilling life and better world.

The post details the importance of being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent as it relates to living your everyday life, whether you’re a Scout or not.

Blog author John Patrick Hickey shares important wisdom that anyone can appreciate:

People are looking for the keys to be successful in life. They read books, go to seminars and attend classes (all of which are great things to do), but they sometimes miss the things that have been around for ages and have a proven track record. You do not have to be a Boy Scout to appreciate and benefit from the Scout Law.

How You Can Inspire Others to Live the Scout Law

All-embracing stories like these with a Scouting twist can be a great recruiting tool that offers prospective Scouting parents insight into how the program prepares their children for the future. Read Lifehack to get the full story on how the Scout Law applies to anyone and then share it with your friends, family and parents of prospective Scouts on social media. And tell us in the comments below, what other universal lessons do you think Scouting teaches?
