Welcome to our January 19th, 2015 Monday Memo | | Highlighted Titles mean New or Changes Made Martin Luther King Jr. was a Boy Scout Martin Luther King Jr., the American civil rights hero whose life we celebrate every year around this time, was a Boy Scout. Just typing that gives me chills. It’s a fact that should make Scouts everywhere remarkably proud. I had read rumors online claiming MLK was a Boy Scout, but this week I got confirmation: From age 11 to age 13, King was registered as a member of Troop 151 in Atlanta. The handwritten troop charter renewal forms, scans of which you can see below, also include the name of King’s father, Martin Luther King Sr., who was the troop’s chartered organization representative. The troop met at Ebenezer Baptist Church, now part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Both King men served as pastors there. I was pleased to learn Scouting is still alive and well at Ebenezer today. Troop and Pack 213 meet there every other Sunday. Those young Scouts must feel so proud to meet at the same spot where one of our nation’s greatest heroes once donned the Boy Scout uniform. TEMESCAL VALLEY: Scouts Cultivate Rare Plant | Waste Management recently hosted its first volunteer-based restoration project for Many-stemmed Dudleya to support local Boy Scout, Brandon Mendoza, with earning his Eagle Scout Rank, the highest grade in Boy Scouts of America. Waste Management's El Sobrante Wildlife Preserve has the largest population of Many-stemmed Dudleya in Western Riverside County with about 33,800 plants. The Many-stemmed Dudleya is native to Riverside County and sprouts yellow star-shaped flowers April through June. As a California Native Plant Society List 1B species, the small succulent could qualify as rare, threatened, or endangered under the California Endangered Species Act. Brandon led Temescal Valley Boy Scout Troop 107 to plant thousands of Many-stemmed Dudleya seeds in Waste Management’s 680-acre El Sobrante Wildlife Preserve. The project supports the landfill’s goal to preserve the rare species through supplemental planting and direct seeding of rock outcrops, which is where the plant typically grows.
