New | Gearing up for #GivingTuesday - December 1st, 2015 | | The BSA has a proven track record of shaping youth into people of outstanding character – people who understand the meaning of accountability and the importance of servant leadership. On #GivingTuesday, December 1, 2015, we’re continuing that record by helping Scouts become the leaders of the future. Read on to discover how you can help invest in tomorrow’s leaders this #GivingTuesday. What Is #GivingTuesday? #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingstTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. How Your Support Helps Scouting Investing in the Boy Scouts of America creates opportunities for youth to gain memorable experiences and be instilled with values, principles, and skills that will help them develop into the future leaders of our nation. By contributing to Scouting, you will have a profound impact on America. More youth will experience the program that will further instill values and character in their moral fiber. Support provided to local councils is used for scholarships, program supplies for youth activities, volunteer training, and camp and service center maintenance. Additionally, the National Service Center provides local councils with program materials, resources and support of the Scouting program. Funding provided to the National Council is used for the development of program materials and resources, infrastructure support for local councils, and development of both professional and volunteer training materials. | New | Boy Scouts learn how to be topnotch Den Chiefs! | | Den Chief Leader Training held in Mount Rubidoux District drew eight Boy Scouts to learn about how to better serve Cub Scouts. David Kinder, assisted by John Elliot, new Cubmaster of Pack 506, lead the Scouts through the training, covering the syllabus and emphasizing items such as Scouting is about principles and standards and how to communicate that to the Cub Scouts. "I had great participation and collaboration from the Scouts as they shared their circumstances with their dens and what they’re doing – and if they could make improvements on it," David said. He also discussed the new changes to the Cub program, especially the integration of the Scout Oath and Law. The Scouts also discussed how to be a role model for a younger brother who may be in the den. "A few of the Scouts told me that they weren't bored and they were learning a lot," said David, who has conducted the training twice before. The four-hour training had plenty of breaks, fueled with donuts and milk! "This was a great group of Boy Scouts and it was a lot of fun for me to teach this class!" The training was held Nov. 7 at the LDS Church on Blaine Street in Riverside. |

They helped clean up the Rancho Cucamonga neighborhood on Sapphire and Thoroughbred streets after Halloween night. This is only one example of a great community service project. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are a wonderful part of our community. Eagle scouts from Troop 655 were also present and participated in the clean-up. Kudos! | New | BSA Leads to New Adventure for Adults & Scouts | | One of the greatest qualities that I admire about the scouting program is that it exposes youth to new experiences that they wouldn't normally receive in their normal day to day lives. One of the hidden gems of the scouting program is that it can perform the same service for adult scouters too. I was first introduced to paddlesports by fellow scouters 5 years ago. We would often meet on our days off from work and paddle around local lakes. It's to their credit and my meeting them at BSA activities that I decided I like the specific sport of kayaking. Local Troops started inviting me to their campouts at Fiesta Island or day paddles at Lake Perris. There always seemed to be a keen interest whenever I told of my trips down the Colorado River. During my pursuit of new places to explore I had many scouts, Scoutmasters, and parents ask about the adventures that I shared through social media. The question that they would ask the most often is "Where is that river at?" or "When is the next time your going through there? I'd like to go there too.". It is from these inquiries that I soon found myself organising the annual Black Canyon Trek, Picacho Trek, as well as several shoreline cleanups at Lake Perris and Lake Silverwood. In January of 2014 I decided that I wanted to get a long trip under my belt and kayak the entire lower Colorado River from Hoover Dam to Morelos Dam on the U.S. / Mexico Border. This is a trip of 340 miles and 2 weeks in length. I'd like to point our that Order of the Arrow asks their members to embrace the concept of servant leadership and cheerful service. Its from these ideals that are ingrained in my psyche that I decided to make this trip down the Colorado River a fundraiser for 2 charities. I named the fundraiser the Bow South Expedition and raised money for Cahuilla Lodge for the purpose of sending youth OA members to the 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference. The second charity was the Sherman Indian Foundation to benefit the students at Sherman Indian High School in Riverside. On November 15, 2014, I launched near the base of Hoover Dam and finally reached Morelos Dam on the afternoon of November 30. It's because of my involvement with the BSA and its outstanding volunteers that I gained the motivation, endurance, and skills needed to complete this trip. Wilderness survival and emergency preparedness even came in handy south of Parker, AZ, when I was stuck overnight on a shrinking sandbar in freezing temperatures. On November 13 I'll again launch from Hoover Dam for the 2015 Bow South Expedition. This year a team of fellow scouters, and one scout, will be joining me kayaking the lower Colorado River as a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Sherman Indian Foundation. I'd like to invite everyone to follow the adventure through our social media and satellite tracker feed on the expedition website at www.riverbroncs.com/bowsouth. I'd also like to challenge youth, adult, parents, and even non-scouters to explore the virtues of servant leadership and cheerful service. Whether you are 15 or 50 years old, ask yourself "where will scouting take me today?" James Hermes, Aca Chapter Adviser & Trip Leader of the Bow South Expedition |
New | Cub Scout Pack 346 Loses a Great Leader, Scouter & Friend | | On October 16, 2015, Mark Heider passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. He leaves behind his wife of 13 years, Danielle and his boys, Casey and Brody. Mark was a father, family man, hiker, athlete, Scouter and a mentor. All of us in Cub Scout Pack 346 have been deeply impacted by the loss of this great man. In Scouting, boys are taught to Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace. These phrases encourage the boys to consider leaving the environment as they found it so others may enjoy it as well. However, the other principles taught in Scouting teach the boys to actually “Leave A Trace” and to be a service to the community. A pillar of these principles was Mark Heider. Mark was a Scout when he was a child and completed his Eagle Scout. When his son, Casey began Cub Scouting in 1st grade, Mark stepped up to be the Tiger Den Leader and continued to lead Casey’s Den until last Spring when Casey and the other Den 1 Scouts completed their Arrow of Light and Bridged into Boy Scouts. Mark’s younger son, Brody is now a Tiger Scout and Mark continued this year to be an influence and support to the current leaders of Brody’s Den. Mark’s influence went well beyond the boys of Casey and Brody’s Dens. Mark’s energy and love of Scouting impacted all who met him in Pack 346. Some of the words of parents of Scouts who have been touched by Mark are shared below: “Not only was Mark Heider https://www.facebook.com/mark.edward.562114 a dedicated fun leader to his pack, but he was also a mentor to our son … in scouting. Our Son is looking forward to reading Mark’s letter in his Eagle tin when he becomes an Eagle Scout.” “The world lost a very wonderful man last Friday. As a parent, people will come into your kids life that give so much of themselves, they will forever be etched on your child's heart. Mark Heider was that kind of person. Trying to help our son through this loss we decided to think about what Mark taught us, what his life meant to us. He taught us life is about relationships, making and keeping connections with people. He taught our son so much about the outdoors, service, confidence, team work and how to be a good leader. Always taking the time to bend down to the same eye level as the child he was speaking to, to make them feel important and not intimidated. Most importantly he showed us how to be an amazing father to his boys. You have left an amazing legacy Mark in so many lives.” “You were an amazing role model to my son. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you gave and did. Thank you for asking our son to be a part of Cub Scouts and thank you for all the wonderful memories we share in Cub Scouts. “ “Thank you for being the best Scout leader for my son” “Scouting creates friendship and kinship between those who participate. Scouting lost an amazing spirit yesterday with the loss of Mark Heider. Mark was full of life and energy and led his Scouts to success and more importantly to friendships that will last a life time.” “Mark was an amazing spirit with loads of energy and I'm a better person for knowing him.” “Mark had a passion for life, Scouting and his beautiful family. A man to respect. Mark has been an involved mentor to all our boys, including mine, and took so much time with each of them. He has left a legacy in the investment he made in the future of our boys.” “Just met a couple months ago, but immediately recognized his truly inspiring character. I was really looking forward to getting to know Mark better. Not only for his help with being a good Cub Scout leader, but because he's one of those rare people I've met in life that inspires me to be a more outgoing, happier, friendlier, generally better person. I am truly saddened by his passing and feel a great loss.” “Mark was an example to be emulated by Scouts of all ages, and was a pillar in Pack 346.” As Danielle said when she spoke with me earlier this week, it will take a village now to help the family continue on without their father and husband. Our Pack hopes to continue Mark’s legacy and support his boys as they continue their journey in Scouting. | New | Remembering Willis "Beau" Sawyer | | Our Scouting community has been greatly diminished with the passing of long-time Scouter Willis “Beau” Sawyer, who served our Council as an adult leader for more than 30 years. Beau began as Cubmaster with Pack 62, then moved on to Troop 16 where he was an Assistant Scoutmaster and, ultimately, the Troop Committee Chairman; however, his Order of the Arrow service is even more notable. He accepted many roles within Cahuilla Lodge, including Wanakik Chapter Adviser, as well as Cahuilla Lodge Advisor. A Brotherhood Member, with the Vigil Honor name of Klamachpin; which is interpreted as “Quiet One”, Beau was never one to seek the limelight, choosing instead to humbly accept any task without expectation of reward or acclamation; yet, awards he did receive. He was honored as Cahuilla Lodge Arrowman of the Year in 1994, and subsequently received the coveted Founder’s Award. A Silver Beaver recipient, Beau’s passion was in the realm of training. He was a Wood Badge Assistant Course Director and served a dozen years on the faculty of Foxfire, where he was Clan Chieftain (Course Director) in 2008. An Army Viet-Nam Era Veteran, Beau is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughter Heather; son Heath, who is an Eagle Scout; and two grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 21st at The Vineyard Fellowship, 935 N. McKinley, Corona, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made by contacting Mike Downs at 54miked@gmail.com In Service, Don Salva | New | Turkey Shoot 2015 | | This past weekend was the 20th Annual Varsity “Turkey Shoot” which took place in the upper area of Camp Emerson. The Varsity Teams took part in a Geocaching course that took them throughout the upper camp. They had several different waypoints which they used to find the caches on their way to the event activities that morning. The morning events included Rock Toss, Kabor Toss, Hawk and Knife Throw. When they got back from the Geocaching activity they were excited about the event and were looking forward to next year’s Turkey Shoot. In the afternoon the Varsity Scouts competed in Black Powder and Archery. Prizes earned during the competition included patch knives made with deer antlers, medicine bags, chokers, and either a whistle or a mini flash light; everyone received a cool Turkey Shoot patch.
