Welcome to our February 2nd, 2015 Monday Memo | | Highlighted Titles mean New or Changes Made Attention CIEC Campers! Deep in the heart of winter is when thoughts of summer days start to enter one’s mind. Warm, lazy days followed by cool nights under a harvest moon or a fist full of stars. Mountains so sharp they seem to touch the sky and breezes that caress the skin. Well trust me…your summer camp staff is pining for it now! They are already starting to prepare for what is shaping up to be one of the best summers ever! Boseker Scout Reservation is also getting ready and campers this year will notice many improvements. From newly repainted cabins and lodges to our recently refurbished (and nicely heated) swimming pool. We will offer arguably the best shooting sports program in Southern California and for the third summer in a row Chef Neil will be providing his outstanding selection of dining options. The theme this year is “The Wild Frontier” and it’s going to be a rootin tootin shootin good time! Speaking of outstanding our summer camp staff and counselors were recognized by the campers last year as being exceptionally professional and knowledgeable. The vast majority of those same individuals are returning this year and the few new staff being added fit the same mold of competence and customer oriented service. The focus will continue to be offering a safe learning environment where the goals of every scout can be realized while having a ton of fun! New merit badge training is also being offered this year such as Search and Rescue and our High Adventure Team will see the Zipline return along with more Mountain Biking opportunities. Attached to this letter is the Camp Emerson 2015 Summer Camp Registration Packet. You will find all the information you need to register for any of the camp sessions as well as the critical dates and fee structures. You will also note this year that our fees are all-inclusive and will cover all the shooting sports and High Adventure activities. A check of our fellow Southern California camps will quickly show that we have the most competitive pricing structure around and on top of that we are a local camp and within 60 to 90 minutes of most of the Council. The early bird gets the worm so be sure and register early to get the prime camping spots. See you at Camp! Yours in Scouting, Michael McCarty, Council Camping Specialist Boseker Scout Reservation Spruced up! Good looking Trading Post! Great New Cub Scouting Program Resources Exciting changes are coming to the Cub Scouting program that will make it simpler to execute for unit leaders and more fun for boys! The changes were outlined in webcasts conducted on January 17. Those webcasts were recorded and are available for your use below. A “History of Cub Scouting” video was shown during the webcasts and is also available by Clicking Here Every Cub Scout deserves a Trained Leader! Wayne Brock, Chief Scout Executive | 76th Annual Lincoln Pilgrimage News Alert Our 76th Annual Lincoln Pilgrimage is just a little over two weeks away now on Saturday, Feb 7th. Please encourage your units to register whether or not they are purchasing patches, which we hope they will do. Knowing the number in each unit helps with the parade lineup is why we ask you to sign up early. You can always register additional scouts, leaders and adults that morning at registration table. This year the Lincoln Pilgrimage will have six horseback cavalry civil war re-enactors from the 7th Michigan Cavalry including General Grant. The Sons of the Veterans Reserve Color Guard will also be joining us for the march and for photo opts after the Redlands Bowl Program there at the Lincoln Shrine. We will also have Joe Daniszewski serving as guest speaker sharing a little of his historical research on President Lincoln as a history major in college. It would be good to have lots of units from around the council participating as we haven't had a council executive speaker for several decades. If you have any questions, please contact our Chairman Mark Shaffer. His phone number and email address can be found on the Registration Form Map & Directions. We know that serving the LDS population can be a challenge at times and hope that this visit will help you in developing relationships that will strengthen the delivery of Scouting in your council. This invitation is extended to key national and council professional and volunteer leadership including the council LDS-BSA relationships advisor and the LDS-BSA relationships chair. Please complete the attached application form and email to ldsbsa@scouting.org. Tours are given of key church sites in Utah that will increase your understanding of the church. This is not a classroom training, but a field experience where you will learn how the church relates to Scouting and how you can relate more effectively with LDS church leadership in your area. There will be ample time to ask questions. Troop 720's “Who Will Survive” Competition Weekend! Troop 720 continues to “Live the Adventure” in January with our annual Patrol versus Patrol campout. This year we ventured to Lake Perris where perfect 72 degree temperatures, crystal blue skies and a practically empty campground made for a great weekend! The competition activities included Blind Tent Set Up; Burn the String; Iron Chef Dutch Oven Dessert; Scout Skills Relay Race; Gateways; Knot Tying and the ever popular Food Eating Contest comprising of a variety of concoctions designed by our ASPL’s and SPL. The highlight of the event was a traditional Flag Retirement Ceremony where each scout pair were able to retire a flag and the Senior Scout leadership had the opportunity to retire a Garison Flag ( Pictured Below ). The weekend was full of competitive spirt, creativity and energy. All the members of Troop 720 were able to say they “Survived” the event and were ready for more. Scouts Install Trail Markers YUCAIPA – Brian Kennedy, 14, a freshman in the Engineering Academy at Yucaipa High School, held his Eagle Scout Project Jan. 24 and 25 in the Crafton Hills Open Space Conservancy. Brian proposed, organized, fund-raised, purchased the supplies for and lead 13 volunteers installing trail markers over 6.5 miles of the Crafton Hills Ridge Trail. The first of 15 trail markers begins at Crafton Hills College and continues in half-mile increments to Grape Avenue. These fiberglass markers display contain a QR code that directs visitors who scan it with smartphones to the Conservancy's web page for more information. The volunteers included members of his Boy Scout Troop 341, chartered through Redlands Christian Schools; the Yucaipa High School Mountain Bike Team; as well as other community volunteers from Redlands and Yucaipa. The GPS location of these markers will be distributed to CAL FIRE to assist first responders and rescue personnel with accurate information on the mountain. "I think it's important for anybody who goes out on the trail to know his or her bearings and have access to good information, Brian said. “This project will hopefully help lots of trail users for years to come."
