2015 Camp Emerson - Working on the Summer Camp Dream!

Deep in the heart of winter is when thoughts of summer days start to enter one’s mind. Warm, lazy days followed by cool nights under a harvest moon or a fist full of stars.  Mountains so sharp they seem to touch the sky and breezes that caress the skin.  Well trust me…your summer camp staff is pining for it now! They are already starting to prepare for what is shaping up to be one of the best summers ever!

Boseker Scout Reservation is also getting ready and campers this year will notice many improvements. From newly repainted cabins and lodges to our recently refurbished (and nicely heated) swimming pool. We will offer arguably the best shooting sports program in Southern California and for the third summer in a row Chef Neil will be providing his outstanding selection of dining options. The theme this year is “The Wild Frontier” and it’s going to be a rootin tootin shootin good time!

Speaking of outstanding our summer camp staff and counselors were recognized by the campers last year as being exceptionally professional and knowledgeable. The vast majority of those same individuals are returning this year and the few new staff being added fit the same mold of competence and customer oriented service. The focus will continue to be offering a safe learning environment where the goals of every scout can be realized while having a ton of fun! New merit badge training is also being offered this year such as Search and Rescue and our High Adventure Team will see the Zipline return along with more Mountain Biking opportunities.

Attached to this letter is the Camp Emerson 2015 Summer Camp Registration Packet. You will find all the information you need to register for any of the camp sessions as well as the critical dates and fee structures. You will also note this year that our fees are all-inclusive and will cover all the shooting sports and High Adventure activities. A check of our fellow Southern California camps will quickly show that we have the most competitive pricing structure around and on top of that we are a local camp and within 60 to 90 minutes of most of the Council. The early bird gets the worm so be sure and register early to get the prime camping spots. See you at Camp! CLICK HERE for Camp Emerson Leader Guide 2015

Hornaday Conservation Award Turns 100

An average of a dozen Hornaday Awards are earned each year. By contrast, 56,841 Scouts earned the Eagle Scout Award in 2013.

The awards are named for the esteemed American zoologist, conservationist and taxidermist William Temple Hornaday, who served as the first director of the Bronx Zoo and established the Permanent Wild Life Protection Fund. In a 1920 memo, Hornaday spelled out the three goals of the awards: “First, to furnish a lasting token of appreciation of valuable services rendered to the wild life cause. Second, to attract attention to the duty of the good citizen toward wild life; and Third, to develop new leaders in the warfare against the destroyers of wild life.”

For Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts, the Hornaday awards — badge, Bronze and Silver — require a challenging combination of merit badges and conservation-related projects. And these aren’t just any projects, says Hornaday committee chairman Tim Beaty. A 35-year veteran of the U.S. Forest Service, Beaty spent 20 years as the service’s national liaison to the BSA and works with the Hornaday Award committee charged with reviewing every Hornaday application. Beaty says that successful Hornaday applicants all share a burning passion for their projects. Read More.....

Troop 646 Campout in Joshua Tree

A great time was had by all at Blackrock Campground in Joshua Tree National Park two weekends ago.  Members of Troop 646 from the Old Baldy Distrcit, out of Alta
Loma enjoyed the beautiful scenery, hiking, star gazing and the nice weather.  Besides cooking some awesome meals in the Dutch Oven like Apples and Sausage Breakfast and Hawaiian Style Baby Back Ribs, the Scouts also made some Monkey Bread in an old Coleman Box Oven that came with our donated trailer from Troop 303 in Ontario.
A special thanks goes out to Jim Raymond and the Church for donating the trailer and all of the equipment that came with it!
The Scouts had lots of time to work on Rank Advancement, and I am happy to report that Blake P. earned his Life Scout Rank and Jaden L. earned his Tenderfoot Rank!
It is always a pleasure to camp in Joshua Tree, which is one of our favorite places to camp.  It is so beautiful there and no place else quite like it, especially the night sky.
We are all looking forward to our next campout in March, which will be in San Juan Capistrano.
If you would like more information on the fairly new Troop 646, please contact christytroop646@gmail.com

2015 Picacho Trek, Paddling Down The Colorado River

On February 13 - 16 Venturing Crew 377 help our inaugural Picacho Trek through the Imperial Wildlife Refuge and Picacho SRA. This area is extremely special because it is the longest remaining natural stretch of the lower Colorado River. It is home to many species of wildlife including eagles, bighorn sheep, beaver, and deer.

We spent the first night at Walters Camp, CA. On Saturday morning we were woken up by a nearby pack  of howling coyotes and a burro yawing in the distance. We soon launched our canoes and a kayak to begin our adventure down the Colorado River. The river welcomed us with a gentle northerly wind and absolutely perfect weather. After only a few miles our team members began marveling at the incredible vistas of the ancient volcanic landscape that the river passes through.

We spent Saturday night at Camp 4S near the top of Picacho SRA. When we departed on Sunday morning we were treated to the view of a bald eagle and an osprey flying overhead. Late Sunday morning one of our team members spotted what looked like an old reed passage. In the spirit of exploration we decided "what the heck, let's see where it goes". We paddled through over 500 feet of the passage. At times it was so narrow and overgrown that we had to pull ourselves, not paddle, through the reeds. The treasure at the end was an absolutely stunning view of Adobe Lake, one of the many backwater lakes on this section of the river. To get out we had to navigate around submerged trees and reed islands to find the better known passage that leads back to the main river channel. When we finally reached our campsite at Taylor Lake we took the opportunity to hike up to the top of nearby hills and explore some of the old mine tailings.

On Monday we launched early to avoid heavy headwinds that were predicted for later in the day. Along the way we took the opportunity to stop at an old miners cabin next to Finger Lake and explore an abandoned gold mine. Just to find the gold mine was a bit of a challenge. We had to follow an old burro path into a wash, scramble over rocks, and then we finally found the abandoned processing equipment. Nearby we found 2 shafts to the mine and another great story to tell.

We finished our journey, as well as the experiencing one of the highlights of the weekend, early Monday afternoon at Fishers Landing, AZ. There is a cafe at Fishers Landing that serves some of the best hamburgers that you will ever have. None of our team members were disappointed. In fact, none of us ate dinner on Monday night because we were so full from our meals at the cafe.

I would like to thank Paula Boothe for again serving as the outfitter as well as being a member of our team on the Picacho Trek.

Scouts and Venture Crews that were not able to join us on this trip will have another opportunity very soon. Our Venturing Crew is holding our annual Black Canyon Trek during spring break, March 27 - April 1. We will be spending 5 days paddling 36 miles from Willowbeach, AZ, to Cottonwood Cove, NV. This area of the Colorado River is a favorite of many paddlers for good reason. The adventures here are only bound by the limits of your imagination. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the Black Canyon Trek then please contact the trek adviser.

Maximillian "Max" Hernandez to represent Elsinore Middle School at RIMS County Science Fair

Troop 523 Boy Scout, Maximillian "Max" Hernandez, is an assistant patrol leader, troop bugler and on his troop's color guard team. He also will be representing Elsinore Middle School at RIS County Science Fair on April 3, 2015.

On February 15, 2015, Max was 1 of 7 students who placed First Place over 300 entries for grades 6-8 at Elsinore Middle School GEMS program. This school has a special curriculum for Gaining Excellence in Mathematics and Science (GEMS). The First Place winners were selected to compete against the six other middle school first place winners in grades 6-8.

At the Lake Elsinore Unified School District Science Fair on February 26, the ONLY First Place winners in grades 6-8 were from Elsinore Middle, there were 4 winners who competed against over 50 First Place projects from the 6 other middle schools.

The school district winners will advance to the the prestigious RIMS County Science Fair. RIMS, Inland Science and Engineering Fair is a competition of science projects designed, developed, and displayed by elementary and secondary students from schools in Riverside, Inyo, Mono, and San Bernardino counties. This year the RIMS Fair will be held on April 3, 2015, at the National Orange Show. They will be interviewed by a panel of judges and compete against hundreds of school district First Place winners from the Riverside, Inyo, Mono & San Bernardino Counties. It is an incredible accomplishment to advance to this level.

Max collected data and did research for about 4 months and has worked about 160 hours to date. He has maintained a 4.0 throughout the process.

He is really excited about winning at his school and at his school district. Most importantly Max has been getting the opportunity to share his project, "Your Parents Can Sing, Can You?", which has been so much fun for him.

The Venturer Prayer

Used by the Venture Scout section.

Lord, We thank you for letting us come once again to marvel at your creations. We hope that those in the group who are new to this activity will leave with the same sense of wonder that we always feel as we step into a cave.

We treat these activities as fun, but always with a sense of wonder at the thousands of years required to create even the smallest of the features at which we look.

Help us to preserve your work, both for ourselves and for future generations of Scouts and Cavers.

Amen.
