Camp Emerson - Sign up this Week and SAVE $20 per Scout!

Hello Scoutmasters and Committee Chairs.

I wanted to share with you opportunities for Summer Camp this summer. If you’ve not already made plans, or you have a new crop of kids that need a great Summer Camp experience, please consider Camp Emerson held at the Boseker Scout Reservation in Idyllwild, Ca. I’ve attached the Leaders Guide for the camp. You can also visit the website and check out all that’s new at camp. www.bosekerscoutreservation.org/

When my son and I joined Boy Scout Troop 634 in Rancho Cucamonga, we immediately signed up for summer camp. Attending summer camp as a kids was always a highlight of my year.  The camp we signed up for was destroyed in a forest fire before our week, so we found space with our unit at Camp Emerson. Wow were we ever lucky. We had the most amazing week at the oldest Boy Scout Summer Camp West of the Mississippi River.

This year we are excited about our brand newly remodeled HEATED POOL and our brand new ZIPLINE for the E-Team. Chef Neil Royer is returning to provide some of the best food any summer camp provides. The experienced staff is returning this year and will be bringing their love of Scouting, enthusiasm and great customer service to your units. Our trading post is getting fully stocked up for a fantastic experience for everyone. We have some of the best shooting sports facilities in Southern California that are FREE TO USE TO ALL CAMPERS included in the registration fees.

In council fees for Emerson are $325 / scout, $180 / leader… oh and because you leaders take your vacation time to spend with us at camp, the FIRST TWO LEADERS ARE FREE to attend.  That’s quite a deal. The early bird discount ends 4/17/15 so get your full payment in soon!

If your unit is already attending a Boy Scout summer camp elsewhere, that’s great. Please let us know where you attended because that week counts toward your unit’s Journey to Excellence award, and we’re all looking for a Gold ribbon this year! Please keep Emerson in mind for future years. If your unit is NOT attending a BSA summer camp this year, please consider Emerson.  Remember that only BSA Summer Camp is counted in your units JTE goals. I hope to see you at Camp!

Cub Scout Day Camp Early Bird Details!

Hello Cubmasters and Pack Committee Chairs.

I wanted to share with you California Inland Empire Council’s best opportunities for Cub Scout Camping.

Cub Day Camp is getting close, and there’s still time to register for this Rootin Tootin Wild West themed hootenanny. The attached flyer will let you know who to contact and how.  The Early Bird discount of $10 per camper is still available until May 5th so get your registrations in for that great savings. Old Baldy District Cub Day Camp is held June 1 through 5, and held in the evening from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, after the day starts to cool down.  This has been a great fun time for the kids, and for the adults as well. Make plans to attend Day Camp. It counts toward your units Journey to Excellence camping score, and we all want that gold ribbon this year.

Another great opportunity and a whole lot of fun for you and your sons is Camp Wiley. Camp Wiley, held at Camp Emerson at the Boseker Scout Reservation in beautiful Idyllwild, Ca. There’s a whole week of archery, BB gun shooting, swimming (in our brand new HEATED pool!!!), knife handling (all fingers will be counted before and after, not to worry), Boy Scout skills (got to give our Cubs a glimpse of what they can expect when they join Boy Scouts), nature study… and the food… we have again one of the best chefs in the Inland Empire, Neil Royer. Nobody goes away hungry and the food is always great. Camp Wiley is a residence camp, which means the Cubs and parents spend the entire week at camp. We have 5 sessions of Wiley this year, and the Early Bird discount of $20/person is still available through 4/17, so get on your horse and make that reservation. CLICK HERE to Register Online

Camp Wiley also counts toward your unit JTE Score, but more than that, it’s an amazing experience to have with your son. Young Cubs that spend time camping with parents grow up and have these as some of the fondest memories of childhood. Why not experience that together. Camp Wiley is a CIEC Tradition for decades, and has always been a highlight of the year. Kids that attend camp are more likely to stay in Scouting, advance and take advantage of the program completely. This translates into joining a Boy Scout troop and sticking with the program until they’re 18, and if they are determined, earning the Rank of Eagle Scout. Put your cub on the road to success and spend a week with him up at camp, you will never regret it.

I hope to see you there!

Camp Wiley 2015 The Wild Frontier

Attention Cub Scouts and Parents! There have been several changes influenced by BSA National this year. You already know about Tigers now being allowed to attend Camp Wiley, but starting this year we are relaxing the one scout to one parent ratio for Cub Scouts and instead will only require that two adults be present for every group of up to eight boys.  We must still require, because of youth protection standards, that each camp site have a registered leader over 21 and either an additional registered leader over 18 or the parent of a Scout, but other than those requirements we can now offer the more relaxed ratio of two adults to eight Cub Scouts. It is our hope that these new standards will allow Scouts to come to camp who might not otherwise get to go because parents couldn't get the time off. See ya at Camp!

FAQ’s About the New Cub Scouts Program

Q: What sorts of changes have been made?

A: The Cub Scout program has hardly changed in the last 45 years, and in that time we have seen significant change in the boys who participate. The new program has been designed to better align with the overall mission of Scouting, to appeal more to today’s youth and to be easier to organize and run for leaders while still providing a fun and educational experience. Most changes are focused on the actual programming itself, so things like the ranks, the focus on enjoying the outdoors and the family orientation are all remaining the same with at most only minor tweaks.

Q: What things, specifically, are changing, and what are staying the same?

A:

Changes

Remaining the Same

  •    Scout Oath and Law replaces Law of the Pack and Cub Scout Promise.
  •    Tiger Cub becomes simply Tiger with a new image.
  •    Arrow of Light no longer requires earning Webelos rank.
  •    Activities are more active and align better with the aims/mission of Scouting.
  •    Advancement has been simplified.
  •    Academics and Sports Program has been discontinued.
  •    The current device for recognizing the completion of an elective has been replaced.
  •    There will be one Den Leader Guide per rank that will spell out not only what each meeting should cover, but why and how.
  •    The program will remain family focused.
  •    All the same ranks.
  •    Each rank still serves the same ages as they have in the past.
  •    The overall approach to advancement and running the program will remain the same.
  •    The Den/Pack Meeting structure has not been changed.
  •    Outdoor Program
  •    Delivery Model
  •    Fun

Q: When will all these changes take effect?

A: The new program is currently being finished, and national hopes all units will be using the new requirements by the beginning of the 2015-2016 year (which for most units is in Aug.-Sept.) Basically, for a boy starting on a new rank after June 1st, use the new requirements.

Q: What is an Adventure?

A: In the past, Cub Scouts advanced by completing a series of belt loops, pins, patches, arrow points, etc. These are all being replaced by a single element: The Adventure. An Adventure is essentially the basic level of achievement in Cub Scouting now, and completing all the Adventures for a given rank will allow a Cub Scout to advance.

Q: Where can I get more information?

A: National posts information on their Program Updates Page: www.scouting.org/scoutsource/programupdates.aspx

www.CubScoutIdeas.com has a section on their website devoted to the new changes.

BSA Acquires Scoutbook, the Wildly Popular Advancement Tracking Web App

With a tap on your phone you can deposit a check, update your family grocery list or share a photo.

Shouldn’t keeping track of a Scout’s advancement be just as easy? The Boy Scouts of America thinks so.

That’s why today the BSA announces it has acquired Scoutbook, the revolutionary web app that makes tracking advancement easier, faster and more fun. That means more time for you and your Scouts to enjoy those life-changing experiences they can’t get anywhere but Scouting.

Imagine updating your Boy Scouts’ progress toward a rank or a merit badge with a couple of taps or clicks. Or letting Scouts input and provide proof for their own advancement progress. Or seeing at a glance which adventures your Cub Scouts lack for the next rank. Or knowing which of your unit leaders still need to complete BSA training. Or getting an automatically generated shopping list to make your trip to the Scout Shop a breeze. Or never again wondering whether you’re using the most up-to-date BSA requirements.
