International Camp Staffer

Introducing Camp Emerson’s and Wiley’s International Camp Staffer, Angel Song. Angel is a member of The General Association of the Scouts of China in Taiwan where she has achieved the Rover Scout rank which is the highest rank for Taiwanese Scouts.

Angel is twenty years old and has been involved in Scouting for eight years. She is currently in charge of public relations for her crew and will be crew leader next semester.

In 2012, Angel attended the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden and will participate in the Asia Pacific Region Youth Forum in October of this year.

She is looking forward to her time at Camp Emerson and Wiley. This will be Angel’s second visit to the United States. “When I was an elementary student my aunt and her husband went to Harvard to study so I just stayed with them in Boston. Lobster is delicious!”

Angel enjoys swimming, scuba diving, mountain climbing and shopping! Her favorite foods are steak, seafood and Korean food. Her parents are both teachers for the blind and she has one brother.

If you’re attending Camp Emerson or Wiley this summer, please be sure to say hello to Angel. If you want to start practicing, “hello” in Chinese is “ni hao” (pronounced knee how).

Each year the CIEC International Scouting Committee (ISC) sponsors an international staffer through the BSA International Camp Staff Program. Having an international staffer working at Camp Emerson provides a unique opportunity for campers to learn more about the World Brotherhood of Scouting as envisioned by Robert Baden Powell. If you’d like to volunteer to be a host family for Angel during her days off, please contact Bill Dull, CIEC International Representative at WBDull@aol.com.

Troop 614 Baden-Powell Hike

On Saturday April 11, 2015, Troop 614 of Upland CA. conquered Mt. Baden Powell. There was a total of 13 Scouts and 4 adults that made the quest to the top. Most of the Troop made it to the top by noon, others determined to make it, a little longer. The most impressive part of the trip was even though most everybody made it down from the top in a timely manner, the older Scouts stayed and waited 2 hours for the rest to make it down, and for that I will be forever grateful. Way to go Troop 614!

"On-Target" Workshop 2015

This past weekend the Varsity Committee put on a workshop for teams to learn about Operation “On-Target”. They learned the history of signal mirrors, used by Scouts in the 1920's to the present day and now used in the Varsity Scout program.  There were several different types of hand held mirrors that Richard Fowell brought along with his 1920's Heliograph. The presentations covered history of mirrors, how to find peaks with map & compass and GPS. The topics covered in the presentations were: Mountain Top Ceremony, awards, “On-Target” pins, patches, service projects and what to do if the weather does not cooperate. Everyone that attended made a personnel hand held retro-reflective signal mirror and Teams made a larger Team mirror. Operation “On-Target” activities happen this year on July 18th and September 19th. Everyone went outside and learned how to use the mirrors they made and signaled Greg Palmer who was 2 miles away on Box Springs mountain. It was a great event that all who attended enjoyed and left excited for Operation “On-Target”. Looking forward to seeing Teams and Crews to take part in July or September events.

Local Scout Earns Award for Scientific Excellence

Nine-year-old Dallas Bowden displays his Supernova Award.

A local Cub Scout earned a distinctive honor for his explorations into the world of science.

Dallas Bowden, 9, earned the Dr. Luis Walter Alvarez Supernova Award, named after a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and professor who measured the magnetic moment of a neutron.

Bowden had to complete a multi-step process that involved crafting experiments, learning about various scientists and performing scientific demonstrations in front of his peers for the award.

Bowden at first earned his Nova Award alongside his fellow Cub Scouts earlier in the year when they all participated in a science experiment at an event at the Western Science Center in Hemet. Read More.....

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“In Scouting you are combating the brooding of selfishness.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

O God, give me a heart of prayer.
Let prayer be easy for me.
Help me see it as a joy, not labor, and a privilege, not a chore.
Precious God, do as Your Word promises.
Make me joyful in Your house of prayer!
