Good Deed

My son is a Life Scout – Troop 713 Manhattan Beach.  Every year we attend Bruin Woods in Lake Arrowhead. On Saturday, July 18 it was absolutely pouring rain, thunder and lightning, as you probably know. Some of the other people checking out decided to simply wait rather than drive down the mountain. We had another commitment so I started the drive, carefully, down the mountain towards Los Angeles. Just past the village we started following a truck that was pulling an equipment van.  It was marked with the Boy Scout troop insignia from Rialto (I thought Troop 110, but not sure now). We started down the mountain, and came around a curve; he stopped, I stopped.  It turns out two medium-sized boulders had fallen onto the road on our side of the road. There was no traffic coming the other way, so he pulled into the other lane and around, I followed him, and then he stopped in our lane of traffic on the other side of the boulders. I wasn’t sure why, then I saw movement in my rearview mirror.  Five boys in Class A uniforms had jumped out of the car behind me, and the scouts huffed and puffed those boulders plus ancillary rocks to the side of the road! Once they were safely back in their car, on we went. It was great! I just wanted to say “thank you” for a job well done!

ArrowTour 2015

The rain couldn’t dampen the spirits this past weekend when ArrowTour rolled on through on its nation wide tour. ArrowTour was at the Irvine Outdoor Education Center in Orange County on Saturday as it continued its wind around the country leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow at NOAC.

The turnout was good despite the rain and everyone participated in patch trading, screen printing and some branding of belts and various items. There were presentations on the history of the Order of the Arrow and some great video of our past national service events. ArrowTour was also at the Long Beach council on Thursday and Camp Trask on Wednesday where Cahuilla Lodge helped staff some of the booths.

Special thanks to Ron Price at the trading post and Larry Krikorian with all of his patches of Lodge history.

Do a Good Turn Daily

Must share a great story! After a fun-filled day at the ArrowTour 2015 in Irvine, my son, Jonathan Stanley and I stopped for dinner in Corona. As we were driving home we were stopped at a light to turn onto the freeway. We quickly realized the pick-up truck in front of us was stalled as the man hit his hazard lights and jumped out of the truck to signal us to go around. He then proceeded to attempt to push his truck. I no sooner was thinking Jonathan should help him, when Jonathan threw his car in park, hit his hazards and ran out to help the man push his car across 4 lanes of traffic and down the street. Wish I had taken a picture as he was in his Venturing uniform and OA Vigil sash. (maybe someone in Corona on McKinley did!). So proud of my son!

Mountain Bike Program

Many Scouts rode hard and got dirty during the all-new mountain bike program at summer camp at Camp Emerson. Instead of casually riding around camp, Scouts are biking on steep trails on and off camp.

The program is run by Ian Thomas, a Cal Poly SLO student, who is a big time mountain bike enthusiast. He also shows Scouts how to maintain their bikes and properly use their ride. With help of camp staff, Ian built a training course by the boat house that included a ramp, obstacles and mounds. Ian then leads Scouts on exciting bike rides over miles of mountain trails.

"This is so much fun," said one Scout attending the second week of camp,  then showing off the scrape on his knee, a badge of honor earned while peddling on a trail. Some badges are worth bragging about!

Summer Camp

The second week of summer camp at Camp Emerson ended with a backpack full of compliments from campers. "A great staff." "Terrific program." "Camp has never looked better!" "The food is awesome!"  Scouts certainly got their money's worth: The all-inclusive fee meant no payment for materials required for merit badges. The camp also added a new attraction -- a zip line -- and an improved mountain biking program. Plus rock climbers found new routes to try at a climbing boulder near Bear Trap Bowl thanks to SoCal Adventure Company and Hangar 18 Indoor Climbing Gyms. A national camp inspection that same week gave rave reviews from the top notch rifle range (called one of the best in the region) to the E-Team forge area ("very clean" and unique in the area). Great adventures await you among the pines!

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“It is risky to order a boy not to do something; it immediately opens to him the adventure of doing it.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

I woke up happy today. I will pray for my family, I will pray for yours.

I will look at the bright side of things, and be thankful for what I have been given.

I will be ok with my unanswered prayers because I have faith in why.

Amen
