How Do You Celebrate the 4th of July?

On the Fourth of July, the Scouting nation will celebrate one of the most revered and celebrated days in American history: Independence Day. A time for appreciating our nation’s freedom, Independence Day is a special holiday for Scouts and Scouters to commemorate America’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence. And as citizens of this great nation, Scouts learn the importance of honoring the significant day. Read on to hear first-hand about Scouters’ celebrations (both past and present) of the country’s independence.

Independence Day Scouting Memories

“In the summer of 1997, I visited my son at the National Jamboree at Fort AP Hill. During the recorded playing of Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to Be An American,” the jamboree finale fireworks show began. I was sitting center stage with my son and his jamboree troop mates. About halfway through the show, they started shooting fireworks from a second location at the same time. We all stood up in amazement and the sky was lit so brightly that you could recognize faces hundreds of feet away. It is one of those special moments with my son that I’ll never forget, and I frequently speak about it when discussing the key benefits of Scouting with prospective new families. A personal story always makes the connection, especially for newer parents looking to the future with their son.” – Rex Starr of Eugene, OR

“Cub Scout Pack 405 Wolf and Webelos will be honoring our country as the color guard in the annual Fourth of July parade and kicking off festivities for the city by leading the community in the Pledge of Allegiance immediately following the parade. The Scouts are drilling twice proceeding to have a crisp presentation. Scouts will spend the day together concluding with the city fireworks show.” – Shawn Banfield of Georgetown, TX

A Special Message from Philmont Scout Ranch

During the early morning hours of Saturday, June 27, Philmont lost a Scout from Sacramento when the area was hit with significant rainfall that resulted in elevated stream levels and flash flooding in areas across the property.

The entire Scouting family continues to mourn the loss of this exceptional young man and our prayers are with the family, troop members and friends.

Many people have asked how they can help during this very difficult time. We encourage you to support the family, through this fund: http://www.gofundme.com/y52amw. Also, the Philmont Staff Association has created a memorial scholarship in honor of the young man. Details can be found at www.philstaff.com.

Additionally, some have inquired about the other crews hit by the floods across the Ranch. Several participants lost their gear, backpacks and tents in the flooding. Some of this gear has been recovered and the rest has all been replaced through the Tooth of Time Traders. All of our attendees are now back on the trail.

We sincerely appreciate all of your support for Philmont. Several trails and bridges were damaged in the floods, but our amazing staff has showed their resiliency in rising to the challenges that this storm caused.

Please continue to pray for the family of this young man and keep all those involved in your thoughts during this time.

NYLT Leadership Academy

In 2016, Western Region will host an NYLT Leadership Academy for the first time at Cabrillo Youth Camp (Los Angeles Area Council) and I will serve as course director. We are looking for youth that are interested in serving on staff for the leadership academy but they will need to have gone through the academy before. http://nylt-leadershipacademy.org/

Hopefully there are some youth from this years' staff that might be interested in attending.

Since our council has never sent youth to the Leadership Academy, there is a scholarship available. If we send two youth, the second is free (basically buy one get one free) so we can essentially send two youth for half the price. Here is additional information on the scholarship program http://nylt-leadershipacademy.org/leadership-academy/scholarships/

I'll be attending the first session in Washington DC this summer so hopefully I will see a couple of youth from our council.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Brandon Leong brandonmleong@gmail.com

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“It is only when you know a boy’s environment that you can know what influences to bring to bear.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

Lord God of hosts, God of the nations: By your grace and in Your patience You have allowed this our land once again to celebrate its birth, its primal guest for liberty, justice, and equity. And we are grateful.

And once again by Your grace and in Your patience You have called this House-- responsible men and women who are equally faithful and unfaithful, righteous and unrighteous before You, each other, and the people-- You have called this House to the exercise of its solemn task of the legislation of law and the formation of the Nation.

Remind these Your servants that liberty, justice, and equity remain ahead of this Nation as tasks yet to be fulfilled and not as goals already reached.

Maintain before us a clear dedication to the needs of those in our midst who are on the outside because of age, ill health, race, sex, poverty, and urban or rural degradation.

And consecrate anew this Nation to the exercise of imaginative and sacrificial leadership in a restless and violent world which still struggles for authentic justice, peace, and a safe home in Your creation.

Accept now, O God, the labors of this day and the frail lives of Your servants in this House. To You be all honor and glory, world without end.

Amen.
