Fall Membership Drive for your Pack

Memo To: Cubmasters and Pack Committee Chairs

This fall the California Inland Empire Council would like to invite you to conduct your fall membership drive in a slightly different way. Field results from several other Councils have pointed to a plan that works!

The idea:

When parents receive school flyers or electronic information about your Pack AND the parent(s) and child come to your sign up meeting, they are there ready to pay and sign up. Notice we use the term “sign up” and not recruitment. Also, the other Councils suggest that for the first meeting Pack leaders should wear their Pack tee shirt, day camp tee shirt or polo type Scout shirt or just civilian dress. So let’s make it easily and keep the sign up meeting short with more information and directions about your Pack to follow.

Here is the plan:

First-be prepared to welcome the new family, have them fill out the youth and/or adult applications, collect the national fee and any local Pack fees, give them information about your Pack and a 12 month Pack calendar and next steps. On a given sign up night, a parent(s) and child could accomplish the above in less than 30 minutes.

How - we accomplish this sign up meeting by having 5“Stations”. Parent(s) and child move from Station 1 to 2 to 3 etc. Here is an example:

* Station #1 – Welcome; sign in; receive “Welcome to Cub Scouting” info;

* Station #2 – What We Do: Pack calendar, when we meet, activity flyers;

* Station #3 – Complete Registration Forms, receive leader roster;

* Station #4 – Turn in forms, pay fees, sign up for fun activity at camp;

* Station #5 – Meet your Den Leaders

More information and resources are on our council webpage at http://www.bsa-ciec.org/join/membership-resources/60674

Summer Time Fun with Troop 646!

At the end of June, Alta Loma Troop 646 of the Old Baldy District traveled up North to Long Barn, CA for their first Summer Camp at "Camp Hi-Sierra". The Scouts earned 47 Merit Badges and had a great time. The weather was perfect, the scenery was beautiful and the staff was awesome! The Scouts kept busy all week with their Merit Badge classes, and all of the activities that they participated in. Troop 646 is looking forward to next year's Summer Camp.

In July, Troop 646 took a Backpacking trip into our local mountains. For 7 people out of the group of 12, it was their first backpacking experience. We saw plenty of wildlife, including a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and Mule Deer. The Scouts worked on Rank Advancement including Animal and Plant Identification as well as taking a 5 mile hike with a Map and Compass. Some of the Scouts were working on their Camping or Cooking Merit Badges as well. The Scouts plan on going backpacking again and hiking more miles next time!

Positive Quote & Prayer

“The Scout Oath and Law are our binding disciplinary force.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

A Summer Prayer

Long warm days...
The pace of life slows...
A time for picnics and rest in the shade...
Lord, help me to rest awhile
in the cooling shade of your presence.
Slow down my restless heart and fill me
with gentle compassion for all your people.
Amen.
