Setting the Record Straight on the BSA Adult Leadership Standards

Recently, several questions have been raised about the BSA’s new leadership standards and the effect the standards might have on the BSA. Regretfully, some of these comments appear to be aimed at causing division or confusion within the Scouting movement.

One source of these questions is a July 2015 commentary on "The Legal Ramifications to Churches of BSA’s New Membership Policy." This document recycled a May 2013 memorandum on the same topic,1 including copying the old discussions of the "new youth membership policy" adopted in 2013. None of the predictions from 2013 about litigation or other problems for the BSA came true.

The BSA already has addressed many of the issues raised in the commentary, both in the resolution itself and in memoranda with factual and legal support that the commentary lacks.2 While no one can fully predict future legal actions, the following is meant to clearly explain the effect of the leadership standards and to provide facts in order to address speculations. CORONA: Explorers Explore Future Careers

Over the course of seven days, students in Corona Police Explorer Post No. 404 learned what it’s like to be a police officer.

They were briefed on a number of law enforcement skills, such as handcuffing, K-9 tactics and firearm safety. In addition, they were taught leadership and communication skills, took part in physical fitness and were introduced to careers options.

Lieutenant James Patton said the Explorer program is pretty close to actual police training.

"However, it's not about making them police officers but giving them life skills,” he said.

The Corona Police Explorer Program works with the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life Program to create future leaders. Established in 1966, Post No. 404 is the second oldest continuous law enforcement post in the U.S. Many staff members were Police Explorers and now work training the next generation of leaders. Congratulations to Camp Emerson “Golden Knot Award” Winners

Old Baldy District Troop 641 was awarded the coveted Golden Knot Award for the third session of Camp Emerson on July 24. The troop, chartered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8680 in Rancho Cucamonga, achieved the award with only six scouts. And, of the six scouts, half of them were first-time summer campers! The last time the troop attended summer camp they won the Fiesta Island Honor Troop Award, too. They’re on a roll, and they look forward to seeing what next summer will bring.

World Scout Jamboree is Underway

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree began on July 28th in Kirara-hama Japan.   You can check out the arrival of over 35,000 Scouts from around the world and highlights from the opening ceremony  on You Tube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yQ0BNla6FY.

For those of us who are unable to attend the actual event, there is an avenue for Scouts to “Join in the Jamboree.”   What is “Join in Jamboree”?  Join in the Jamboree (JIJ) was started because the 15th World Jamboree, which was due to be held in Iran in 1979, was cancelled due to the political upheaval at that time.  JIJ was distributed to the participants for use in their own countries.  For subsequent World Scout Jamborees, JIJ has been provided so that those unable to participate in person at the Jamboree site are able to experience the Jamboree program first hand.  The JIJ program materials can be found here: www.23wsj.jp/media.html#jij.

Positive Quote & Prayer
-------------------------------

“The Scoutmaster must be alert to check badge hunting as compared to badge earning.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

Father of mercy, I beseech thee to protect me in my endeavors as I try to live my ideals.

May I not choose unnecessary burdens, and when I most need to be strong find that I have lived in that which has weakened my life.

I ask for a clear mind and a strong heart that I may be "Captain of my soul."

Amen.
