Idyllwild: Scouters Attend Woodbadge Leadership Training

By John M. Blodgett / Contributing Writer

For two long September weekends, 53 adults from a local Boy Scouts of America council met at Idyllwild’s Camp Emerson to start their Wood Badge journey, a tradition extending to scouting’s early days.

Wood Badge is a program that teaches “scouters,” or adults involved in scouting, how to be better leaders. During an initial six-day course, scouters identify a “ticket” of five personal goals that must be completed within 18 months for them to earn Wood Badge regalia.

The California Inland Empire Council of Boy Scouts of America, serving Riverside and San Bernardino counties, holds the Wood Badge course twice a year, in spring and fall.

“We mimic what an actual troop would go through in a month,” said Tom Marino of Hemet, one of 15 scouters who served on staff.

The first weekend emulated three weeks of meetings and activities, the second weekend a camping trip. Scouters were divided into patrols, each denoted by an animal, and participated in team-building games and activities. Read More.....

JOTA/JOTI is Coming to a Station Near You!

What is JOTA/JOTI?

Jamboree on the Air/Jamboree on the Internet is the annual event where Scouts from all over the world can come together to be a part of something great! Every October, Scouts throughout the United States join with other nations around the world to visit their local Amateur Radio stations and get a chance to talk with other Scouts worldwide.

The World Scout Bureau reported that last year’s JOTA/JOTI had more than one million Scout participants from more than 11,500 stations, nearly 20,000 amateur radio operators, and reached 157 countries!

YOU can be a part of this year’s event! JOTA/JOTI 2015 will take place the third weekend of October, the 16th-18th. Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Each Scout who participates in the JOTA/JOTI is eligible to wear this patch (shown above) showing that they worked the airwaves of America and possibility the world.

This worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur’s ham shack. Many times the hams will come to you by setting up at a Scout camporee or Pack event. There are many ways to get your Scouts involved in JOTA.

At next week’s CIEC Adventurers Weekend/ Sheriff’s Rodeo (Sept 25-27), there will be a radio station set up to show the wonders of amateur radio and what happens during the JOTA/JOTI. Come by and visit the station to see how it all works.

Troop 357 in Apple Valley is sponsoring the 2nd Annual David Deards Memorial Jamboree on the Air weekend camp out Oct 16-18. Contact Greg Rickerl (760) 559-4450 (rickerI5@verizon.net) or JoAnn Wood: (760) 646-1661 (jowood419@gmail.com) for more information. You can also get your unit tuned in by contacting a local ham radio operator or a local amateur radio club. A searchable database of clubs can be found at www.arrl.org/find-a-club . This website is operated by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio, which is cooperating closely with the BSA on JOTA and many other activities.

Imagine your Scouts communicating across the country and around the world, sharing stories and experiences over the airwaves with Scouts just like them. Be part of a worldwide Scouting event…be part of JOTA/JOTI 2015!

The Super Scouts

My name is Heidi and I am the Committee Chair for Cub Scouts Pack 257 based out of Apple Valley. Our Pack has been working hard at selling popcorn, as most Packs are at this time, but there is one exception that I wanted to share.

After seeing a need in the High Desert, Pack 257 formed its first of a kind, "Special Needs" Den for boys from first grade on with mental, physical and emotional challenges (from Autism to Chromosone Deletion to Emotionally Disturbed). We are known as the Super Scouts. Currently we have five boys in our den with three more coming in next Monday, featuring the Wolf and Webelos 1 ranks currently. ALL boys deserve a chance to belong to this wonderful organization and learn at their own levels. Although our Pack believes in mainstreaming a boy with a challenging behavior or medical need, this den is an option for the parent who feels that a different learning style is better suited for their son. This den has been a special goal for me personally to form because of my own son with special needs (Autism, ODD, BiPolar and ADHD). This 'special' den is led by my husband, John White as leader (as well as myself without holding the title) and all parents staking a claim in the den as co-leaders.

Our den, the Super Scouts, held our first den booth sale at WalMart in Victorville and not only did these boys excel in their popcorn sales, but they ALL proved to us parents that they COULD go out there and be social as best they could and with prompting, ask shoppers if they would like to support local scouting and buy popcorn. Each scout showed sides to them that we did not know existed, until pushed a little out of their comfort zone. You could see and feel the pride in each of us parents as we watched our young scouts do something for themselves that was not the norm for them. One of the parents was so surprised by her son and how he was able to communicate with strangers (something that is not typical for him), it brought most of us to tears. She was able to catch him on video and shared it for all our scout families to see.  Each boy was amazing in his own right!  As the Committee Chair of Cub Scouts Pack 257, and as a parent of one of these amazing young scouts, I couldn't be more proud of each and every boy and their wonderful and supportive parents!!! We will continue to sell our popcorn and work towards each scout specific rank (boys are all earning their Bobcat rank at our September Pack meeting on the 29th - now that is going to be one very special and emotional ceremony).

If you would like more information regarding our Super Scouts den, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Indian Summer Prayer

Stepping across the threshold a warming southern
breeze stirs memories carrying scents familiar.
My mind knows we are through,
but my heart swears it’s you.

Gazing across these rolling hills, waves
of rich green and harvest ready browns.
Hay bales and combines speak of a season
reaching end. Still the setting sun now on
the near horizon spilling its reflection long across
the lake, hints of summer’s heat and passion.
Then the late autumn air chills these arms and breast, once warmed by your embrace.

Wondering if you miss summer as I do.
