| | | | | September 28th, 2015 | New | What an ADVENTURE we had this WEEKEND! | | We had an awesome time this year at Adventure Weekend. The fun started on Friday with some music and dancing. During the opening on Saturday morning, 900 participants saw a helicopter land right in front of them with the San Bernardino County SWAT Team jumping out and presenting the flag to our camp! Following the opening, activities began for the Cub Scouts and competitions started for the Boy Scouts and Venturers. For hours, Scouts had a chance to build teamwork, have fun, meet with local vendors, and enjoy food such as Sophia’s Funnel Cakes and Carl’s Jr! We capped the night off with campfire. The Cub Scouts enjoyed skits and songs, and the Boy Scouts earned awards including the 1st annual Adventure Cup for the best overall patrol awarded to the Raptors Patrol from Troop 53. As a whole, the event was a success and plans are already being made for the 2016 Adventure Weekend on September 23-25, 2016. View More Photos | New | Campership Letter | | Dear C.I.E.C. Campership Committee, I am writing this to thank you for your assistance with sending me to Foxfire this summer. I had an absolutely amazing experience for that week and had the chance to further define my leadership capabilities. We learned many important traits that excellent leaders use to influence their followers to accomplish a common goal. For example, we learned the importance of communication which makes tasks go very smoothly. Also, we learned about problem solving which is equally important if you run into a challenge along the way. Aside from great leadership skills, we had a chance to make "Mountain Man" gear like: a tomahawk, lead black powder rounds, and different leather accessories. In addition we got to participate in activities that "Mountain Men" would do. This includes tomahawk throwing, hiking, climbing and repelling, black powder shooting, and much more. The faculty at the camp was spectacular and definitely helped all of the Scouts make outstanding goals and put their newly learned leadership skills to work. I persoanlly would recommend this camp to anyone who has graduated from NYLT. Once again, I am very grateful for your assistance with sending me to Foxfire. Sincerly, David L. The survey is set for Tuesday, October 6. As this time rolls around once again, there are some updates you should be aware of. Read on to learn what’s new and review how this important tool affects you. What Has Changed - District information is now included in all dashboard excel downloads. The VOS dashboard has been enhanced, with downloadable excel files that identify the respondents’ district affiliation. Downloads from the comments page on the VOS dashboard will now include the comment from the NPS question.
- The Experience Recovery Request is being removed. Existing reports can be downloaded from MyBSA until October 31.
What’s Staying the Same Actions to improve the membership experience remain the same. The action items we rely on you for are consistent too: - When the VOS dashboard goes live, review the results and encourage your district executives to do the same.
- Review the feedback of Scouts, Parents, Volunteers and CORs to identify the strengths and weaknesses in each district.
- Develop two or three action-based goals based on the feedback. Be transparent with your goals including targets, deadlines and owners responsible.
- Communicate changes the council has made based upon the VOS results.
The survey process and timeline is also familiar to those who have participated in the past: - Surveys are emailed on the first Tuesday of the cycle month.
- Surveys are sent to people who have been part of Scouting for at least 90 days.
- Surveys stay open for two full weeks.
- Results are posted on the VOS dashboard approximately 3-4 weeks after surveys close.
- An infographic and executive summary are produced each cycle and posted on www.scouting.org/jte approximately 6-10 weeks after the survey closes.
Need a Refresher or Want to Train New Staff? VOS has an archive of introductory materials on www.scouting.org/jte under the Voice of the Scout section. Nichole Horsley | New | Trip Down Utah Canyon becomes Survival Quest | | SALT LAKE CITY, July 24— After months of training and preparation, five teen-agers and three adults from a Mormon youth group set out on July 15 for a high-adventure expedition into Zion National Park that was supposed to be the highlight of their summer. But within three hours of beginning their four-day trek into the Narrows of Zion, two adult leaders had been sucked into whirlpools and drowned. The swift waters had swept away all but one of the party's backpacks and rope. And the last leader and the five teen-agers were stranded at the bottom of a 700-foot-deep canyon fighting the cold, the hunger, the fright and the deafening roar of Kolob Creek. After four harrowing days, rescuers hoisted the survivors from the canyon late Monday. On Friday, the funeral was held for Kim Ellis, 37, while recovery teams searched for the body of the other drowned leader, David Fleischer, 27.
