| | | | | October 3rd, 2016 | New | Connecting Inland's Disconnected Youth | | All of our youths need to be inspired, encouraged and infused with high expectations. Graduation season is upon us! This time of year we are hopeful for the success of our high school and post-secondary graduates. As they move on to further academic pursuits or careers, we see the destiny of our community before us: our future teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists and leaders. But that isn't the whole picture. According to a report compiled by Measure for America, 18.8 percent of the people 16-24 years of age in Inland Empire are disconnected meaning they are neither in school nor working. This is the highest percentage for a metropolitan area in the United States. Breaking the statistic down by race and ethnicity shows that 24.5 percent of African Americans, 19.4 percent of Latinos and 17.5 percent of white youth in the Inland Empire are disconnected. Their lack of involvement in our community structures has wide-ranging implications for the general well-being of individuals, families and our local society. We have young people falling through the cracks: students without the support systems or pathways to excel in school, young people lacking the basic skills to succeed in college and/or careers and a class of people that will not become engaged citizens. The consequences go beyond having a less-educated population. In Riverside-San Bernardino, one in five adults 25 years or older never completed high school. Earnings in the Inland Empire are about $2,000 less per year than the national median. It is well established that Californians with a college degree earn, on average $1.3, million more over a lifetime than their peers with only a high school diploma. Only 19.2 percent of adults in the Inland Empire 25 years or older have a bachelors degree or higher. As a result, the region has a diminished tax base from which to improve infrastructure, a decreased ability to attract businesses looking for an educated workforce and a reduction of opportunities in the community for our best and brightest students to remain and flourish. In essence, we have a quality-of-life problem that affects us all. The indicators at the root high poverty, high unemployment, low educational attainment, a culture of low educational expectations and increased numbers of traditionally underserved populations must be addressed. The citizens of the Inland Empire need to come together around a shared goal of providing high-quality educational opportunities, and career pathways for all students and put in place a system of accountability for tracking our progress. As I look around the region, I see excellent examples of programs that are preparing our students for academic and career success: AVID, Ontario-Montclairs Promise Scholars, Coachella Valley Economic Partnerships Pathways to Success, Technical Employment Training, Education Roundtable, The Federation for a Competitive Economy, Family Involvement Network, Linked Learning and Project Lead the Way, etc. These stellar programs need to be supported and expanded because our young people need and deserve more. All of our youth need to be inspired, encouraged and infused with high expectations. We cannot afford to allow one child to go uneducated or to be under/unemployed to be disconnected. Pamela S. Clute Ph.D., is Assistant Vice Chancellor, Educational and Community Engagement, at the University of California Riverside. |

We’ve instilled the values of character development, leadership, personal fitness, and citizenship into the core of every activity and adventure. This year, in response to a need we witnessed in the Scouting community, we’re launching a new pilot program to bring these core values to a new audience of kids – kindergarten-age boys. The Lion program, launching in 198 local councils this fall, combines the primary Scouting concepts of leadership and character development with age-appropriate and fun activities for boys and their parents to experience as an introduction to the Scouting program. The Lion program offers 12 adventures for youth to enjoy that help them learn respect for their peers, the importance of family, building courage, and sticking to what’s right. We want to help parents build a strong foundation for their kids that complements an introduction to formal education and allows families to take an active role in their child’s development. We look forward to launching this pilot program within your local council this fall, and we’ve developed the attached toolkit to assist you with promoting the Lion pilot within your community. We appreciate your help in reaching a new Scouting audience, and we thank you for your continued service in Scouting. Aim to serve, not to be served 7. Be gentle, don't hurt 8. Submit ideas, don't impose them 9. Better to be optimistic than pessimistic 10. Cheer, don't depress ~The Christophers, Founder-Father James Keller (1900-1977) A Song of Brother Sun (also known as the Canticle of the Creatures) This is perhaps the best known of St Francis’ writings, and one of the best loved and most used. It has a particular resonance today when people are seeking to forge a new relationship with creation. It was written towards the end of Francis’ life; the first part when he was seriously ill, probably in 1225; the second part in an attempt to make peace between the Mayor and Bishop of Assisi, who had quarreled, and the final verse on his deathbed. His birthday is October 4th. Most High, all powerful, good Lord, yours are the praises, the glory, the honor and all blessing. To you alone, Most High, do they belong and no human is worthy to mention your name. Praised be you, my Lord, with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day and through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor; and bears a likeness of you, Most High One. Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars: in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind; and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather, through which you give sustenance to your creatures. Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water, who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night: and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs. Praised be you, my Lord, through those who give pardon for your love and bear infirmity and tribulation. Blessed are those who endure in peace: for by you, Most High, shall they be crowned. Praised be you, my Lord, for our Sister, Bodily Death, from whom no one living can escape: woe to those who die in mortal sin. Blessed are those whom death will find in your most holy will, for the second death shall do them no harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give him thanks and serve him with great humility.
