Martin Luther King Jr. was a Boy Scout

Martin Luther King Jr., the American civil rights hero whose life we celebrate every year around this time, was a Boy Scout. Just typing that gives me chills. It’s a fact that should make Scouts everywhere remarkably proud.

I had read rumors online claiming MLK was a Boy Scout, but this week I got confirmation: From age 11 to age 13, King was registered as a member of Troop 151 in Atlanta.

The handwritten troop charter renewal forms, scans of which you can see below, also include the name of King’s father, Martin Luther King Sr., who was the troop’s chartered organization representative.

The troop met at Ebenezer Baptist Church, now part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Both King men served as pastors there.

I was pleased to learn Scouting is still alive and well at Ebenezer today. Troop and Pack 213 meet there every other Sunday. Those young Scouts must feel so proud to meet at the same spot where one of our nation’s greatest heroes once donned the Boy Scout uniform. Read More......

A Message from the Chief Scout Executive: 2015 Membership Results

Last week, we gave the National Executive Board and Advisory Council a quick glance at the encouraging results in our year-end membership numbers for 2015. Here is a more in-depth look at the final data as compared to 2014:

2014

2015

Total

Cub Scouts

-8.5

-2.6

1,216,314

Boy Scouts

-3.8

-1.6

840,549

Exploring

-3.5

-0.3

110,445

Venturing

-17.9

-9.4

142,885

Total Traditional

-7.6

-2.7

2,244,748

Total All Programs

-6.3

-3.5

2,355,193

Yes, taken as a whole, we still experienced an overall decline. But the real story can be found in the trends from the previous year. Across the board, the rate of decline slowed last year—in some cases, such as with Cub Scouts, drastically so—driven by both new incremental recruitment and higher retention rates.

For the year, we ended down 2.7 percent in total traditional members year over year. This compares with a decline of 7.6 percent in 2014 and 5.7 percent in 2013. And, although Cub Scout numbers were down 2.6 percent, we ended the year on a three-month positive trend. From October through December, we recruited more new Cub Scouts than during the same months the previous year, with an average of more than 5,000 incremental new Cub Scouts per month.

In the Exploring program, we slowed our decline from 3.5 percent in 2014 to less than a point—0.3 percent—in 2015. And, in the Southern Region, we flipped a 4.7 percent loss from 2013-2014 into a 4.2 percent gain for the year.

This is tremendously encouraging. We believe it shows that we have turned a corner, and are well on our way to overall growth in 2016 so more of our nation’s young people can benefit from the character-building programs Scouting offers.

Why do we feel this is the case? Here are three key reasons that have helped us lay the groundwork for success: First of all, through the efforts of our entire organization, we have been able to pull together as a Scouting family and move past some significant challenges in the past year.

Secondly, we launched a successful new recruiting campaign, “Build An Adventure,” that supported council recruiting across America. The creation of Scouting Wire (scoutingwire.org) and the addition of the Marketing and Membership Hub on the site allowed for a central, one-stop location for marketing and recruiting information that’s accessible to volunteers and professionals alike. This has allowed councils to be more focused and strategic on recruiting and retention.

And finally, we have begun evolving the quality of our programs so that we are delivering a high-energy Scouting experience that reflects the interests of youth today while also representing our key Scouting values and methods.

The data are clear—we are on our way to correcting the historical decline in Scouting’s membership. Reaching that goal will require tremendous focus, strategic thinking, creativity, and hard work. We have challenging days ahead, but also very rewarding ones as we inject new life into our programs and processes—not to mention new faces into Scouting who are eager to absorb all the wonderful lessons and skills that our organization stands to teach them.

We extend thanks and congratulations to volunteers and staff members at every level of the organization—from unit leaders and district volunteers, to those at the council, area, region, and national levels.

When you begin to experience success, you have to take a moment to celebrate it. But you also have to build on it. And that’s exactly what we plan to do. In the coming weeks, we’ll share with you our plans for doing just that, as well as some inspiring success stories from local councils around the country.

Yours in Scouting,

Mike Surbaugh

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“A boy is naturally full of humor.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

O God, we thank you for the lives of great saints and prophets in the past, who have revealed to us that we can stand up amid the problems and difficulties and trials of life and not give in.

We thank you for our fore parents, who've given us something in the midst of the darkness of exploitation and oppression to keep going.

Grant that we will go on with the proper faith and the proper determination of will, so that we will be able to make a creative contribution to this world.

In the name and spirit of Jesus we pray.
