2015 Membership Results

Recently, Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh and National Director of Field Service Don McChesney shared with you our 2015 membership numbers.

I believe these results signal a historic moment for the Boy Scouts of America. It is undeniable that this change across every program segment clearly points to a positive shift in momentum.

The tide of a decades-long battle has turned, and now we must move forward aggressively on all fronts to capitalize on the shift. We must be bold in our approach, energetic in our actions, and pull out all the stops to extend the benefits and opportunity of Scouting to youth in every neighborhood in America.

We have waited a long time for this moment. I believe we are at a historic inflection point for the BSA. Let’s grow Scouting for the first time in decades in 2016.

Scout Sunday

February is just around the corner, and that means Scout Sunday, Scout Sabbath, and BSA’s birthday is too! With the Scouting holiday trifecta quickly approaching, we’re bringing you the dates and details for these BSA celebrations.

Scout Sunday falls on February 7 this year, followed by BSA’s 106th anniversary on February 8, and then Scout Sabbath on February 13. Bryan on Scouting recently shared a blog post about Scout Sunday, explaining how the date is chosen each year. He also has the scoop on Scout Sabbath, and how to observe the special day with your charter organization.

As you may know, Scout Sunday and Scout Sabbath are days set aside to honor the relationships between Scouts and their charter organizations. Each organization is unique, so the way Scout Sunday is celebrated might also be unique. You might celebrate by wearing the field service uniform to your place of worship, while a troop across town teams up for a service project.

If you’re looking for a new way to honor your charter organization, Bryan delivers some awesome ideas along with tips like where to get your Scout Sunday gear. Make sure to check out Bryan’s post and get a head-start on your Scout Sunday festivities!

Want to brush up on your Scouting holiday knowledge? Read our post in Scouting Newsroom for more information on Scout Sunday and Scout Sabbath.

Back in the Day: In 1877, a trip to Idyllwild was a Journey

A portion of the old Crawford toll road leading into the San Jacinto Mountains. It was up this road that Waldo Marquis and his party went to visit the region in 1877. From the time that newspapers began to be published in our region in the 1870s, one occasional practice was for ordinary people to write their reminiscences of some interesting tidbit of local history or lore. One such person was Waldo Marquis.

Marquis, a citrus grower living in Monrovia, wrote to the Hemet News in 1932 detailing a trip he and two of his friends took to Strawberry Valley (the present-day Idyllwild area) in 1877.

That June, Marquis and his party left their homes in Westminster and headed east. They spent their first night in Santa Ana Canyon, their second camping along the Upper Canal in Riverside and the third in San Jacinto. That night, Marquis mentioned that a big cat came to their camp and “investigated” their wagon. Read More.....

First Eagle Scout for Troop 646

Boy Scout Troop 646 of Alta Loma in the Old Baldy District, chartered by the New York Grill Restaurant, is proud to announce their very first Eagle Scout recipient, Blake P.!

On January 9, 2016, Blake passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review with flying colors! Blake started Scouts as a Wolf in Cub Scout Pack 536. He bridged into Troop 652 in 2009, then transferred over to Troop 646 in October of 2014.

For Blake's Eagle Project, he sanded and stained a playground set, replaced the sandbox border and replaced the chain link fence around the playground at the Church where his Troop meets. After Blake's Board of Review, Blake's Family and more than half of his Troop and their families joined him at Legend's, where Troop 646 had their first official meeting, to celebrate with Burgers and Ice Cream!

Blake was Troop 646's first SPL as well, and he did an awesome job!  We are all looking forward to Troop 646's first Eagle Scout Court of Honor!

Moonlight Hike in Painted Canyon

On the night of Jan. 23-24 was the annual moonlight hike through Painted Canyon that is hosted by Venture Crew 377 and the Aca Chapter of Cahuilla Lodge. Twelve adventurous Scouts and Venture Crew members came together late Saturday night in Coachella and then headed out to the trailhead in Mecca Hills.

The dirt road heading into the canyon had some soft pack dirt in areas, but luckily no one's vehicle got stuck in the sand. We reached the trailhead around 11PM, cinched on our daypacks, dawned our headlamps, and then headed into the shadowed recesses of the canyon.

We had to scramble over car sized boulders to reach the mouth of a narrow slot canyon that leads to a series of ladders that must be climbed to reach the top of the canyon. There are sections of this slot that are only a couple of feet wide and 100 feet deep. By the time we were in the deepest parts of the slot the full moon was directly overhead. The moon light that penetrated all the way to the bottom of the canyon created a glowing tapestry that gave the allusion that we were hiking on the nighttime surface of Mars. One Scout commented that he half expected for one of NASA's Mars rovers to snap our photo.

When we reached the top of the canyon we took the time to gaze at the sky. Our timing for this hike was excellent because this was the night that all of the visible planets were lining up. Mike Sanford used the opportunity to give us a quick tour of the sky and point out the location of each of the planets.

We concluded the hike around 3:30AM and headed home with a good reason for sleeping in late on a Sunday morning. Undoubtedly some of the Scouts woke up wondering if it was all a great dream until they found sand in their shoes.

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“If you make listening and observation your occupation you will gain much more than you can by talk.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

This prayer is attributed to Lord Baden-Powell himself. B-P clearly believed that faith was an important component of his Scouting program.

A Scout’s Prayer

Our Father, make us Trustworthy, for there are those who trust us.

Make us Loyal, for through loyalty we reach our highest ideals.

Teach us to be Helpful, for through helpfulness do we forget our selfness.

Make us Friendly, for there are so many who need a friend.

Train us in Courtesy, for courtesy is the carpet on life’s floor.

Make us kind for kindness is the oil in the cogs of life’s machinery.

Insist upon our Obedience, for victory comes only to him who obeys.

Make us Cheerful, for cheerfulness is the green grass among the rocks in the path of life.

Train us in Thrift, for thrifty habits brighten our future.

Make us Brave; brave in the dark and brave in the light; but save us from becoming fakers in bravery.

Help us to be Clean – clean in thoughts, in speech, and in deed. And may we remember that our bodies are Thy holy temples, and that any abuse thereof is to tamper with Thy Great Plans.

Above all, O God, help us to be Reverent toward all things which Thou hast made for our enjoyment when we are in Thy great out-of-doors, among the trees, along the streams, and on the Hillsides. May we know it was Thee who made the waters to flow, the trees to reach heavenward, the mountains to endure to all ages.

In all these things we ask that Thou wilt help us. And may we never forget the Scout Oath to which we all have pledged ourselves, so that through Thy help we may live these points of our Scout Law.

Amen
