A Bequest to Further Good Work

A Bequest to Further Good WorkNancy and David were dedicated volunteers. Over the years, they had seen many individuals helped by the good work of their favorite charity. They wanted to create a legacy to provide future resources to continue its mission.

Dave: The work of our favorite charity was important to us and we provided support with current gifts, but wanted to do more. We received their newsletter and noted that we could make a gift from our estate and join the legacy society. We saw a picture of smiling people just like us and we wanted to be part of that group.

Nancy: We met with our lawyer to revise our wills and we each included a provision for a bequest. Our lawyer put language in the will that allows a percentage of our estate to go to our favorite charity. This was easy to arrange and permits us to still use our assets during our lives if we need them.

We told their gift planner about our decision and were excited when we were invited to a special event honoring us. We will continue to make gifts during our lives, but it feels good to know that our support will help in the future. Read More.....

At the 2016 University of Scouting on Saturday, February 27, 2016, we are offering 76 courses in 7 unique colleges for participants to choose from. Each of these courses are designed to supplement or add to a leader's pre-existing training to enhance their unit's program. In addition to the great courses that are being offered, participants will also have the opportunity to meet and share program ideas with like-minded friends of Scouting throughout the area.

Throughout the day, participants can stop by one of the many booths and displays on the University Midway to get ideas and additional program support for their units.

Troop 377 20th Anniversary!

On January 2nd Troop 377 (Bermuda Dunes) celebrated 20 years of Scouting by holding a taco bar luncheon celebration. We had a scout ceremony honoring our 29 Eagle Scouts, four Scoutmasters (3 of which were present – Lloyd Miller, Guy Chabot, and John Ramont - we were missing the Troop’s 1st SM Joe Hernandez), numerous Scouters, our chartering organization; the Coachella Valley Lions Club, and of course, the Scouts themselves.

About 75 current and past Scouts and Scouters, and friends of the Troop were present. We especially appreciate the effort that nine of the Troop’s Eagle Scouts made in being there, most home from college on winter break. In addition, a couple of our past Eagle Scouts were represented by parents with stories of lore. The Scout ceremony was highlighted by a slideshow arranged by Laura Little (Eagle Scout (Kurt) mom) which brought back great memories of some of the hundreds of activities the Troop has participated in over the years. Plans for the 25th celebration were even talked about as the day wrapped up!

Encouraging Youth to Pursue STEM Careers

STEM, LatinoBoy Scouts of America partnered with LATINO Magazine to gather business leaders and area Latino students to encourage entering STEM fields for the publication’s sixth annual Nuestro Futuro Latino Education Conference on November 20 in Washington, D.C.

Companies includinh GM, ExxonMobil, AT&T, Lockheed Martin and others have committed to increasing diversity and helping to bridge the skills gap among Latinos in science, technology, engineering and math through various educational programs that engage students and encourage them to pursue the fast-growing STEM fields.

The conference offered an opportunity for young Latino students to see Latino leaders as role models in the field, to engage with them one-on-one and to hear their success stories first-hand. Students were able to listen to various panelists discuss personal challenges, as well as offer advice on educational opportunities, scholarships, mentoring and many other ways organizations like Scouting support Latino youth. Local Scout Featured in Boy's Life Magazine

Second Class Scout Sean Skiff from Troop 2 in Riverside is featured in the January 2016 issue of Boy's Life Magazine. He was recognized for his work with Beagle Freedom Project, a non-profit organization that finds homes for former laboratory tested (vivisection) animals, most of which are beagles. He won a ABC Summer of Service grant which awarded BFP with $1000 to aid in future rescues. Sean and his family have also fostered two beagles in their home, both dogs who have already been placed in their forever homes.  He is also publishing a children's book later this year on the subject and will be donating profits to the organization.

In Memory of Cris Romero

While covering events throughout the community, I'd always come across Mrs. Romero (known to the Coachella Valley simply as Cris) with her homemade hats and a genuine smile that could light up an entire room. No matter what mood you were in, if you saw her face, your heart immediately woke up. Whether it was charity work, fundraisers, church events, ribbon-cutting, I knew Crissy would make an appearance in my pictures. If love makes you rich, then Crissy was a multi-millionaire!

So sad to hear of her passing this morning. On behalf of the entire Coachella Valley and our community, thank you Crissy for all the selfless deeds you did for everyone (typically people you never even knew). Saying you were unique is a massive understatement.

Heaven added an angel this morning ... and I know she's bringing her hats with her! God Bless!

In her memory, don't forget to give a little more, "Love Life" just a little more ... And maybe just give someone a smile.

Positive Quote & Prayer

“The most important object in Boy Scout training is to educate, not instruct.”

A Prayer for the New Year

Lord God, we are grateful for the blessings of the year gone by and we thank you for your many gifts to us.  We are filled with hope as this new year begins, and we face with confidence the months to come with all the promises they hold.

Be with us as this year unfolds.  Through your help deepen the measure of peace that is ours.  Bind us more closely to each other and to you through your generous love.

We ask for those who mourn and are in distress, for the crippled, the sick, and the dying, for all who are disillusioned by life, for those who have been broken by war and for nations that are poor and exploited.

Send your Holy Spirit who is light and wisdom to enable us to exile hunger and violence in our world.  We pray for a safe future for our children, for pleasure in our work and patience in adversity, for the comfort and happiness of the elderly.

Grant that through our efforts our world may give you glory and bring forth the promise of your peace to all.  May men and women of all races, nations, and religions sing praise to your name, in newness of heart, now and forever.

Amen.
