Adventure Weekend 2016

Hello Fellow Scouters:

As the 2016 Inland Empire Adventure Weekend fast approaches I look forward to the fun and good healthy competition we are about to embark upon. The patrol type competition will hone our Scouting skills and create comradery for years to come.

This year’s Adventure Weekend, scheduled for September 16-18, 2016 will be all the more amazing by living and practicing the ideals of Scouting and the Scout Law over the coming two days. Each of us has the opportunity and responsibility to practice what we all firmly believe in and commit to making the most out of the 2016 Adventure Weekend for ourselves and those around us by being the fellow Scouts we all know we can be.

I would like to thank all of the many volunteers, staff members, leaders, and Scouts who have worked tirelessly to make the 2016 Adventure Weekend a reality. We also need to express our gratitude to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s for allowing us to be part of this year’s 15th Annual Sheriff’s Rodeo.

I challenge each Scout and Adult Leader to try something new and different this weekend; participate in good healthy competition; find something you have not experienced before and take advantage of the chance to expand your horizons and build lasting relationships.

Each year is a new experience for all of us as we embark on new challenges. If you have been here the prior years, you will definitely enjoy Adventure Weekend September 16-18, 2016. We are working diligently to have all the aspects of Scouting represented at this event.  You will leave with a new awareness of Scouting and also with the new friendships that will be made during this weekend. I look forward to seeing you all there. Please feel free to seek me out if you have any questions or comments. I will be there all weekend. We look forward to seeing you at Adventure Weekend 2016, September 16-18.

Your friend in Scouting, Christopher N. Dahl, 2016 Adventure Weekend Chair

How to Remove Russian Thistle

While recently working on my Eagle project, I saw an opportunity to clear an invasive plant the Russian thistle, better known as tumbleweed. Tumbleweed is an invasive species and you guessed it, brought in from Russia. There are few places you can go that you don’t see the effects of tumbleweed. It thrives in disturbed soils such as agricultural fields, irrigation canals and roadsides shoulders, but will generally be outcompeted by natives in undisturbed habitates. The drought has made the problem much worse in the last few years. Russian thistle will take hold in an area and squeeze out the native ecosystem. It thrives in temperatures between 28 and 110 degree. So you see it can live just about anywhere.

Part of my project was to properly remove the tumbleweed without dispersing the seeds as we removed it. Should you find an area that needs to be cleared out, such as a park, nature sanctuary, hiking trail, etc. (hint, hint, this is a good service project) this is how you would do it.

Use large tarps , like 10 x 8 or larger, pitchforks and gloves. You can just pick up the tumbleweed with your gloved hands or lift it with a pitchfork and put it in the middle of the tarp. Keep doing this until the tarp is almost full. Then fold over two ends of the tarp to cover the tumbleweed, and start stepping and crunching it to break it down.  Once it is crunched down, open the tarp and start the process again on top of the crunched tumbleweed. When the tarp is full, but not too heavy, you fold over the top and carry it to a pick up truck.  The truck bed should be covered with another tarp. Dump the crunched tumbleweed into the bed of the truck. Keep doing this until the truck is full or you have cleared your area. Cover the truck bed with another tarp, then you take it to a place like One Stop Landscape Supply Center, where they sterilize it, at temperatures over 400 degree, so the seed can’t grow. They make organic mulch with your crunched tumbleweed.

This started out as my Eagle project but I realized that with a little more work I could do a Hornaday Badge project too. Look closely at your Eagle project, or service projects. You or your unit’s project might qualify for a Hornaday Award. Talk to the conservation committee or your advisor. I hope you found this information useful and maybe even do a service project using this method.

Yours in Scouting, Andrew Fellows
